I really admire the creators of this series for never letting Mugen crack and break down and ask for compassion and love from others. This would have been very easy to do, but they kept the integrity of his character intact. He will never openly let anyone into his heart and he's fine that way. Its part of what has kept him alive for so long.

I just want to point out that this song is sung in the Ryukyu islands dialect from where Mugen hails. The Ryukujin were constantly attacked by the Shimazu and became vassals of the Satsuma domain, although it became a province they were always looked down by ethnically pure japanese and they suffered a shit storm during WW2 under imperialism. This song is supposedly about the whole struggles of the Ryukujin according to some articles I read about it.
In the first episode when Mugen states that he's a Ryukujin they react with fear, mainly because after the Shimazu took ownership of the islands they banned them from having any sort of weapons, as a response to that and other impositions, a lot of Ryukujin turned to piracy and gained a lot of infamy, Mugen is one of them.

This is one of the most moving scenes in anything I've ever seen or read. It really conveys how a lifetime of poverty and violence have made Mugen's heart rock hard. The song is a brilliant choice. It's a folk song about a mother selflessly toiling without complaint so her children can have a better life. The compassion in the song contrasts with the absolute lack of compassion in Mugen's life, but there's a sense of toil, hardship and iron resolve in both.

He must had felt sorrow or pity for his life but he knew no matters what happens in the life you are all alone in the end. Its you and only you . This character has a spark of solitude and thats give hope for living alone.

After this, Mugen starts to look to the life with another eyes and change his acts, and, in the end, when appears Jin and Fuu in his mind, he understand that he's not alone anymore and they will be forever connected...

Mugen is the ultimate loner badass.
He survives on his own instincts and trusts nobody, he resorted to a life of piracy due to his upbringing, I love how the writers kept the integrity of Mugen's character even after this near death experience and kept him cold-hearted. Nice contrast of characters in the trio. Mugen always stood out because he was the rebellious type where as Jin was more clinical and adhered to the ways of Bushido.

I'd assume its purpose, Mugen and Spike were supposed to die in said moments, but something was preventing them from dying since it seems like they both still had an unfinished purpose. Same goes with the Ainu who just refused to die since his ancestors wouldn't let him die until he finally achieved revenge against the people that burned their village, hence why Mugen resonated with that man since they're both in the same boat.

I think these two episodes where Mugen’s backstory comes to light were easily the most captivating in the whole show. Up until this point in the series, the audience can kind of assume a bunch of things about the other main characters’ lives and why they are the way they are. Not Mugen though, he’s so skilled despite seemingly having no code or ethics or formal training, and he seems absolutely fearless, almost as if he seeks out chaos to feel alive. This backstory demonstrated why perfectly I think.

Whenever I find myself feeling low or confronted with an overwhelming challenge, I seek solace in this specific song, as it serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring strength and resilience that pervades both life and death.

Mugen will always be my favorite character in Samurai Champloo. Whenever I see this scene, I can just feel everything that Mugen feels. Seeing him calmly, underwater. Makes me see the cold heart that he has and that he was always alone. One thing I absolutely love about Mugen is that he does not take bs for an answer, nor does he work with others. I definitely see him as more of an outsider who just lives carefree and doesn't care about the risks involved. He's just here to live his life the way he wants too. He's most certainly overly confident, which as we've seen over and over. Can cause him issues down the road as his confidence may get him in trouble or killed. Anyways, the messages that I've seen through this one clip describes the life he went through before meeting Jin and Fuu. And as well as some background history of where he came from. I find it very interesting. This anime has so much artifacts and some pretty interesting information and messages hidden through the entire anime. Rewatching it again made things feel more different for me.

When you grow up in a rough place/home/family you develop the idea that you are destined to fail in this world, entitled to misery & tragedy, you think: why would God bring me into this on the first place? But eventually you grow out of that idea by overcoming, finding some type of success and happiness. Then when things go south bad enough you usually reset back to that though that God wants you miserable on this world & after a few failures you let go just like Mugen did on this scene, he could swim back up but he actually gave up thinking he was destined to betrayal and misery. Deep stuff...

Really thought that Mugen was going to Live somehow, then he actually sunk, and this got me nervous, then this song started playing with the scene of Mugen looking at the skull, Didnt want to accept that hed die but At that moment it became apparent that he would, I started thinking "Oh Shit he's dying.. No damn it" Then the Grim Reapers came and that Pushed this over, Mugen staying calm throughout was interesting, and honestly the fact that he aint breakdown made The scene more AND less emotional at the same time..
Great Anime. Great Scene. Great Choice of Music.
If anyone hasn't watched it and is here for whatever reason, Do yourself a solid and go watch it.

@HumbleYourSelfXxxX parts i particularly noted were that his parents still watch over him who i believe were the two last spirits in the line who faded slowly. in the end he realizes he lived a life without regrets and is comfortable with the choices he made, but he ends up regretting that he couldn't know his friends better or spend more time with the people he managed to care about.
