    HI.. First off, thank you for all the time you put into making videos to help us see the differences in these keyboards, greatly appreciated.. I have a Fantom 08 and a MODX7, thinking of buying another Nautilus but the 73 key version (had the 88 key one and traded it in due to the weight).. Not positive on that yet, but love the Set List feature for live use on the Nautilus, great for gigging.. Sound wise, the Roland is my go to pianos, strings, and organ, MODX is flutes, saxes, symphonies, brass, etc.. The Nautilus is going to replace my Nord as the organ when I need to use both piano and organ in a song, so it's not tying up the Roland.. I think that these 3 boards should all compliment each other and work well in my gigging rig.. If any of you can try these boards out for yourselves, you will fall in love with all of them..

    I have a Fantom-06 and a MODX7. Both have their strengths depending on the type of sound you're looking for, but for sure, the Fantom blows away the MODX in terms of user interface. And sequencer!

      Does the Yamaha sound nicer than the Fantom like Jack mentioned?

    • @ErraticFaith
      @ErraticFaith 2 года назад +2

      @@tonylancer7367 In most places yes. You trade Roland work flow (which I don't personally like much anyway) and better tactile features; for Yamaha's superior sampling. Fantom-0 trims a lot of things from the full-fat version, whilst Modx essentially retains the full range of its big brother minus the extended specs and polyphony. There are other good 'vs' videos that show this more clearly. For a board that is newer I admittedly expected better from Roland; but I am a Yamaha leaning girl most of the time and do have my bias. On the other hand I do own the Jupiter X and several other roland boards, so it's not a brand thing exclusively. A budget board is always going to trim corners (thats the point for getting you a cheaper price). So pick and choose carefully.

    • @keneokpareke1753
      @keneokpareke1753 2 года назад +2

      @@tonylancer7367 I don't think the Yamaha sounds better than the Roland. There are thousands of patches on each board, so some sound better on one board than the other. But I'm not sure why that matters when you can create your own sounds or download others from the internet. It really comes down to UI, workflow, connectability, and DAW integration. In all these, the Fantom dominates, and it's not even close.

    For me, the Yamaha generally sounded the best. It was definitely the brightest and would cut through well in a mix. The Fantom was a close second, and I liked the piano a lot. The Fantom has some advantages in sequencer, user interface, and action, so I'd strongly consider it. The Nautilus was a definite third place, and it's honestly a bit dated in sound and interface. The guts are basically the Kronos--which launched 10 years ago. It also has the worst screen of the three and the fewest performance controls.

    • @geoffk777

      @@robertw1871 That's true as far as it goes, but a brighter sample isn't going to sound the same as a duller sample that's been brightened up. And the fundamental sound of the MODX is on the brighter side. This is probably good, as cutting EQ tends to distort tones less than boosting it does.

      Nautilus is not dated in sound like the Roland at all. The Roland uses older, much lower-res samples. I find it pretty easy to hear through my playback gear. On a stage, all three are overkill.

    And, if anyone is wondering. Besides the fact that Roland’s Super Natural Pianos have String Resonance, it’s not included in the Fantom 0. This functions seams simply disabled and ist not accessible in the tone menu.

      I think a lot of the sample based sounds in the Fantom 0 are not just 15 years old, more like 25+ years old JV sounds. Sound dated for some compared to the detailed ones in the MODX or Nautilus. I've heard them via Roland VST's which offer the majority of the Fantom 0 sounds and engines. I still have my Roland JV based synth's from the 90s. Some of the samples are very good, but really limited in memory compared to the what Yamaha or Korg's competitors offer. Fantom 0's strength is in the VA & B3 engines.

    In my opinion the Korg Nautilus blows the Fantom and Modx out of the water. I love Roland. I have an XP80 workstation. But I just bought a brand new Nautilus about 2 months ago and I absolutely love it. I do however wish this Fantom 0 series would have been out, because when I played on the Fantom 88 keys, I didn't like the way they felt as I played. You have to feel comfortable when you play and the Fantom 88 with the wooden keys overlaid with whatever they used, were way too heavy, at least for me. The Nautilus fully weighted keys were perfect for me. I am interested in playing on this Fantom 0 series on the 88 key to see if they feel like the big daddy Fantom or more like the Nautilus feel. As for now, I am completely happy with my Nautilus. I recommend them if you are undecided at what to purchase.

    • @robertw1871

      Totally agree, it’s just a different class of instrument… And I love the build quality and clean look of the Korg… It’s a serious step up from the plastic ones, I think the Nautilus should actually be compared to the Fantom not the O series… I don’t mess with a bunch of sliders and buttons live so I’m fortunate to be able to pick the Korg too, love the Nautilus it definitely doesn’t disappoint, and with the Nano controllers I can add pads and sliders easily anytime I’d need them… it’s a fantastic machine…

    • @geoffk777

      The full size Fantom has Roland's PHA50 action. It's heavy for a digital piano, but very similar to a real Grand. The 08 has the PHA4 action which is slightly lighter and more mechanical feeling. It's still excellent. I'm glad that you like your Nautilus, but I honestly feel that it's the most dated and least competitive of the three.

    • @robertw1871
      @robertw1871 2 года назад

      @@geoffk777 It’s not dated though, look at the hardware specs, 3 gig of ram, 60 gig SSD, plenty of horsepower, I’m 100% sure Korg will be releasing plenty of updates for it over the next couple years… They just started with the Kronos + updates, it’ll be more capable in the future… That it’s not made of plastic makes it a flagship product, it’s far superior to the budget products it’s being compared to if you look closer at what it actually is… Nothing wrong with the others and they are far less expensive than the Nautilus…

    • @geoffk777
      @geoffk777 2 года назад +3

      @@robertw1871 I actually own a Kronos 2, (full size) Fantom 8 and Montage 8. So I can compare them. And the Kronos is fine in isolation. But if you compare the sounds and user interface to the other two, it always sounds older, duller and is less intuitive. Considering it's age, it holds up well, but it still shows it. As for horsepower, the CPU on the Kronos/Nautilus is so old that Intel doesn't even sell it any more, which is why it takes forever to boot up. Many Kronos owners have hundreds or thousands of dollars invested in expansions, so they don't care so much about the factory sounds. But, if you stick to those, than the Montage and Fantom flat out beat it.
      I agree that the construction of the Nautilus is solid, although the poky screen and lack of faders is limiting. Ultimately, though, it's very expensive for what it is, which is very old technology. Compared to the MODX or Fantom 9, it's just not a great deal for the money.
      To be fair, the Kronos has lots of fans, like Jordan Rudess. And some people will play all three and choose the Nautilus, which is fine with me. But it wouldn't be my recommendation.

    • @robertw1871
      @robertw1871 2 года назад +2

      @@geoffk777 It’s all in what users prefer, It takes a long time to boot because it’s loading massive sound libraries, which is exactly why it sounds so much richer… Some prefer the Roland I’ll give you that, but the hardware specs of the nautilus just kill the O series Fantom…. It doesn’t have faders, just be honest that’s why the people that don’t like it don’t like it… Be real, if it had a lot of knobs and switches with tons of flashing lights it’d be a winner right? And that’s exactly why I like it, it’s extremely well made and doesn’t look like a plastic toy, not to mention the extra processors for different sound engines and all that extra memory…

    On sound alone in that video, I'd give it to the Roland with the Korg bringing up the rear, a good distance behind. Having heard Matt Johnson playing the Yamaha with a wider variety of sounds, if you asked me to buy one mail order, now, then I'd go with the Yamaha, even though I think the Roland won this particular shootout.

      I can answer this for you. The Fantom can set up a 4-voice layer in seconds with just the front panels controls and barely or not touching the screen. It's easily the winner. It's pretty easy on the Yamaha, but does require the screen and choosing some smallish controls. On the Nautilus, it is possible, but somewhat unintuitive and entirely requires the screen. So Fantom is the clear winner on this.

      @@JeffPalmer83 Here's the process on the Fantom. You have 16 zones, with 8 sliders on the panel. Let's say you have strings in zone 1. You press a button to select zone 2, press a button for sound category like brass and pick a sound. Now you have two layers and you can use the sliders for each zone to mix the levels. You can repeat that process up to 14 more times (zones 9-16 use the shift button). It couldn't be easier than that.

    A few people have claimed the Fantom 0 has reduced quality samples vs the regular Fantom or some other old Roland keyboards. And I don't mean just from differences in the DAC quality, but that the actual sample quality of some are reduced. Has anyone else noticed this? Anyone have both the Fantom & Fantom 0 that have compared? I assume they are probably speaking of the super natural sounds, but I'm not sure.
    What I can say, is I noticed a huge reduction in quality of samples on the Roland FA series vs the same patches in other Roland keyboards. And again, I don't mean differences due to DAC quality, which would end up being the difference between say one pair of speakers or headphones vs another. I'm talking about the actual sample characteristics being very different. Much more than just a fidelity thing.

    • @Jason75913
      @Jason75913 2 года назад

      What other Roland keyboards? '90s keyboards? Juno-G and Juno-Gi don't beat FA, much less Juno-D(i) and Juno-DS.
      DACs have a small enough impact on sound that many audio/electrical engineers out there would laugh at you if you claimed to hear a difference at all, and call you "placebo-fixated" or something.
      In a recording, though, they _do_ have a subtle impact, in my experience.
      Also, as far as samples, Juno-DS, Integra-7, and FA kill all past Roland synth keyboards at acoustic sounds, Roland keeps updating those samples over time at the very least. Not enough, though, Fantom sounds noticeably lo-fi next to Montage and Kronos/Nautilus, so will Fantom-0. Some of the EXP expansions for Juno-DS/FA have lower-fidelity samples versus the FA's own wave ROM. EXP-11 beats FA's own wave ROM for synth samples altogether, then EXP-04's "PremierGrand" beats any SuperNatural acoustic piano on the FA or Integra. Even the Juno-DS can load that expansion. EXP-05 has the best electric piano.
      Fantom-0 having an even poorer wave ROM than the bigger Fantom's? I highly doubt that. I guess I'll find out in June when I can demo a Fantom-0 at a local store.

    In terms of sounds, innovations, live and studio use the Roland cannot be beat by the other two .....By sounds I mean there are 6000 sounds out of the box (including those expansions downloadable from axial) and you can add more through sampler, model expansion synths and Roland cloud website which is great .....innovations means modern display way touch friendly and responsive than the other two including kronos and Yamaha flagship, better buttons lay out more controls, more ins and outs better built-in audio interface.....it's good for live use bcz it has scene remain feature which does not cut the sound the other two I think have the same kind of feature but limited and you are stuck with fewer sounds whereas the the Fantom O scene remain feature is unlimited for all scenes and better sequencer....in terms of studio use the Fantom is out of the box compatible with most used DAWs without mapping it ....... So overall Fantom is great.....

      Preference is subjective. Roland can be beaten easily; as although as said, 'subjective' Yamaha and Nord are the preference here (Asia) for almost all Piano professionals (stage rack). KORG dominate Roland in the area you would expect; synth. They came from that pedigree and literally have access to some of the best sound creators and engineers on the planet. Many of whom worked on the Jupiter-8 and Yamaha Dx7 in the past. Roland excel in the middle ground but they aren't something anyone uses as a dedicated preference. They make great hybrid/versatile boards in a single unit. Better than most, a lot of the time.

    • @robertw1871
      @robertw1871 2 года назад

      6000 inferior sounds depending on what you are doing isn’t exactly a selling point, the baby Roland has some serious memory limitations that the Korg doesn’t so that’s why the Korg easily pulls far ahead in sound quality it’s basic hardware design that makes it impossible for the Roland to keep up… Just this basic comparison here makes that more than obvious if you listen… They are all great instruments and will fit different people, so there is no best… But the quality of sound definitely goes to Korg, it doesn’t have lots of knobs and switches though which some want, it’s pretty easy to add as many sliders as you want to the Korg though through MIDI… The Korg is also about a thousand bucks more, so it’s really not a very fair comparison… The Korg is also not made of plastic, it’s made of metal and wood in Japan so it’s just all around superior except for the limited number of controls which really isn’t that big of a deal for some…

Some of the best Conservatoire and Orchestral pianists were just asked this very question at RAM. All but 2 (of 23) people cited the same opinion.

      That said, you’re spot on.
      My Casio keyboards have minimal patch adjustment capabilities, so if the sound doesn’t quite hit the feel I want, too bad (I do like both the 61 and 88 key Casios as USB MIDI controllers, though). My Juno DS 61 sounds good, and has great intuitive controls, but literally hurts my hands to play after 10 or 15 minutes.
      My Nautilus 61 is a dream. I sat and played it for over an hour in the store and everything just fell into place for me. “Must have this!” (fortunately my wife consented to getting it as an early birthday present while it was on sale) It makes me want to play for long stretches without getting stuck against the machine. The keybed feels good, to me at least. The placement of the controls and menus make sense to me. I can quickly navigate the single patches and splits/layers (“combies”), as well as cook up new layers, or save a drum accompaniment and/or arpeggio pattern with a patch for instant recall the next day. It makes tinkering fun.

      Roland pianos do have string resonance as well as pedal resonance. It depends on the patch, but nearly all of them support it. If you have a big Fantom, than the V-Pianos support it too. Only a few of the older SRX pianos lack it.

      As a spoiled acoustic piano player (real grand pianos or good software vsts) string and pedal resonance is the first thing I usually look into. Lots of digital pianos (especially hardware) have both features, but they are pretty weak compared to the real thing, even if you crank it up to the max. For example I found a convincing pedal resonance in my MOXF, an ok one in my Kawai MP6 and a crappy reverb-based simulation on the Kurzweil PC4/K2700. Good thing is, if you play more in a rock/pop context with drums, bass, etc., it doesn't matter, not so cool on more exposed performances.

    I am excited for ROLAND's Andrew working to share and show the instrument to er'body. Thanks, Andertons!
    I think a forefront interest of mine is the FANTOM-0's organ control, where we see so few hardware control organs for a sub-$2,000 instrument.
    I feel something hurting the instrument is what appears to be lacking velocity sensitivity in the pads. There's no mention of it in the manuals, and I believe I've heard nobody mention it in the videos I've seen.
    I feel the instrument's strengths are the controls, and pricepoint versatility.
    At the fifteen hundred dollar price tag, the FANTOM-06 may be doing twice its price tag if you were to have separate hardware modules for er'vrything; like a $600 Ferrofish hardware organ emulator, an $800 MPC doing your sampling, drum machine and on-device songwriting, at least $500 worth of an analog synthesizer in terms of the virtual analog Zen-core synthesis engine onboard the FANTOM-0, and any imaginable amount of money for your hardware piano and/or all the other instruments this rompler can romple - most of which probably sounds better than sub thousand dollar instruments, and that you can shape the sounds of far more than those cheaper instruments, thus adding to the pricepoint advantage.
    I am aware of the _"it doesn't come with the same free sounds as with the FANTOM."_ Ed Diaz says this thing has upwards of 6,500 preset sounds onboard. That may be a bigger problem for some than for myself.
    I feel this is a wonderfully accessible instrument that can be foundational for many writers, enthusiasts and performers. I feel it most definitely has a place, and I feel it's probably a strong competitor.

    Loved the look, form factor and feel of the Roland Fantom 06, preferred it to the Modx6. Lastly I approached the 61 key Nautilus chuckling to myself and shaking my head...."come on Korg this thing looks like an old M1 but probably heavier and even more menu diving LOL....the other two are light weight, have heaps of onboard controls...pathetic Korg!"🙄 Then I played the Nautilus...and to my ears it was in many ways better sounding than the other two...even if it looks like it was built in 1990! Unlike the other two the Korg had a nice Leslie sim that ramped up and slowed nicely.....not as good as my YC-73 but still pretty good. The Roland organs sounded good but the upper notes on fast Leslie sounded cheesy compared to the Korg and the Yamaha doesn't even have an organ engine. So until Korg brings out something of similar form factor to the Fantom 06 and Modx6 I will just stick to my old Korg Krome 61😁 I know it's subjective but I prefer the sound of the Nautilus over the other two.

The gentleman from Merriam Pianos had the same criticism of the Roland Pianos on the Rd-2000, but he said that after dialing them in with proper adjustments he felt the pianos were among the best. Don’t know why all the companies don’t spend more time dialing in proper adjustments for the pianos as it would save a lot of time for the end user to have several highly customized sounds. But everyone’s preferences and needs are different so probably makes a lot of sense to encourage the user to adjust to their own likes.

      The strings felt better with the fantom to me like for vocals. Felt like you had perfect space for fantom

      Feels intuitive to like sing with it I’m not battling with it. The other strings feel too powerful fur me. They sound more realistic though.

    Inspite of all the fantom fanboy‘s comments I still think that the awkward and brazen Roland Cloud policy speaks against the fantom. Adding a few expansions easily sets you back more than 500 bucks. And if you want to sell the whole expanded thing some day because the next best synth of all times hits the market, Roland will not allow you to transfer the expansion licenses. You will be stuck with them forever without being able to use them yourself once the hardware is gone. Ridiculous.

      They don't want to beputting aftertouch on anything less than flagship keyboards. No matter how many more decades you spend complaining. I'm actually curious as to why.

    Roland Fantom 0 looks better than the Roland Fantom. A lot of good sounds but the Roland Fantom just looks too ugly to me

    i dot like waiting days to view a "short"! anyways the Roand wins and so it should its new,but the korg sounds like it looks...(boring)

      The Korg is lower in volume level, which can give that impression in a side-by-side comparison, plus it has a warmer sound, so I bet you'd change your mind after raising its volume and boosting its upper midrange and lower treble with EQ.

    Fantom was best Epiano and Rhodes. Nautilus had best Pianos, strings and organ. MODX was trashhhhhh. I guess Yamaha saved their good acoustic sounds for the Genos...

    Came to the Guildford store and brought a piano, guy who sold me the keyboard didn't know who the Maltese Falcon was, didn't know who Jack was or what the forbidden rift was! Very disappointing! They better have got their act together for next time when I come and drop a load of cash otherwise I will have to come a third time and fourth and fifth 😂😁

    My two cents, based on personal taste only:
    Acoustic piano: Korg (I take it that's the Italian Grand)
    E-piano: Roland
    Organ: Roland
    Strings: Yamaha

    *Pianos:* They're all really bad, honestly. Korg wins, but there's nothing there for me.
    *Rhodes:* Korg's best as well
    *Organ:* Tie between Korg and Yamaha
    *Strings:* Not sure really, not feeling them.
    You'd think I am a Korg fan, but I used to have a Yamaha Motif XS8, now I have Nords (E6D + Grand)
