Cactus Garden

Located in Guatiza, municipality of Teguise, The Cactus Garden is the last great work of César Manrique in Lanzarote, a fascinating creation that houses about 4,500 specimens of cacti of about 500 species from five continents.
The artist chose an old rofera (canteen, for the Canary Islanders) used as a landfill in an agricultural area of extensive plantations of tuneras dedicated to the cultivation of cochineal, thus assuming the rehabilitation of a place of great landscape value on the island in a state of neglect.
After 20 years of creation, the work gives life to an architecture full of decorative and sculptural elements that integrate with the environment, further enhancing its natural beauty. The presence of volcanic stone and basaltic monoliths converted into sculptures, resulting from the time when the earth was extracted, stand out; but it is the vivacity and exoticism of the cactus that enraptures the visitor in a truly poetic setting of shapes, textures and colors.
This complex, internationally awarded and considered one of the most important cactus gardens in the world, summarizes the rich mixture of languages practiced by Manrique, which he himself called total art: a combination of architecture, spatial intervention, sculpture, interior design or gardening that allows us to know it in its purest state.
Situado en Guatiza, municipio de Teguise, El Jardín de Cactus es la última gran obra de César Manrique en Lanzarote, una fascinante creación que acoge alrededor de 4.500 ejemplares de cactus de unas 500 especies procedentes de los cinco continentes.
El artista escogió una antigua rofera (cantina, para los canarios) usada como vertedero en una zona agrícola de extensas plantaciones de tuneras dedicadas al cultivo de cochinilla, suponiendo así la rehabilitación de un paraje de gran valor paisajístico en la isla en estado de abandono.
Tras 20 años de creación, la obra da vida a una arquitectura llena de elementos decorativos y escultóricos que se integran con el entorno, potenciando aún más su belleza natural. Destaca la presencia de la piedra volcánica y los monolitos basálticos convertidos en esculturas, resultantes de la época en la que se extraía tierra; pero es la vivacidad y el exotismo del cactus el que embriaga al visitante en un auténtico escenario poético de formas, texturas y colores.
Este conjunto, premiado internacionalmente y considerado uno de los jardines de cactus más importantes del mundo, resume la rica mezcla de lenguajes que practicaba Manrique, y que él mismo denominaba arte total: una combinación de arquitectura, intervención espacial, escultura, interiorismo o jardinería que nos permiten conocerlo en su estado más puro.
