BMW i3 50k Mile Issues, Out of Warranty Now What!

  • Alright guys, my 2017 BMW i3 rex is finally out of warranty and of course, some little issues have started to pop up. This car has literally been my favorite daily driver I have ever had. BMW did a great job on the i3 and recently with so many used i3's hitting the market, we're seeing the popularity of this car go up.
    The warranty from BMW is 4 yr/50,000 mi basic, 4 yr/50,000 mi powertrain. Really there were essentially no issues with the i3 over my ownership time and anything that did arise, BMW took care of quickly and easily.
    We have finally made it to the motherland of EV's where we are seeing many companies release their own EV's and most of these cars are seeing better range and technology than earlier EV's. Surprisingly the i3 with mostly the same design for its entire run is still a very competitive vehicle in the EV space. The norm seem to be 200 miles of range for current EV's being released and with Tesla's entry level Model 3 mid-range offering 240 miles of range, I'm beginning to question demand for the i3 going forward.
    Hopefully you guys enjoyed the video and some of my thinking regarding keeping the car past the end of warranty vs. switching it out for another EV like the Tesla model 3 mid range.

    LEDs flickering is a common issue on i3. The climate control module need to be disassembled and the individual LEDs inside need to be replaced with more durable ones. I don’t know about the US, but in the UK there are specialized shops that will do this job via mail order

    The charging door is under extended warranty along with gas door (if your car is Rex model) the sunroof can be reprogram

    On the Rex model, expect the fuel pump relay to fail. (combustion engine won’t start). The relay costs 20$. Mine has 50000 and will never sell it and I think it looks great. The white one is the most elegant

    So basically it was just the sunroof then. The hinge on the charge door is nothing, and the sun visor was a human problem.

    The door is not motorized, it is the latch or whatever that thing is called that is holding the door is motorized.

    The trouble with electric vehicles is just that electrical gremlins the same issues crop up with ice it's always electrics also ev's give out emissions they're called pm emissions due to electrics no doubt this will become an issue at some point in the future

    Could it be that the i3 isn’t quite the car for the usual BMW consumer?🤔
    The i8, totally, the i3, not so much.

    Way too much nitpicking in this review and it gets annoying..
    Trade it in... Obviously you are not happy and you just want a Model 3, go get it and make yourself happy, but be warned, the Model 3 is not trouble free either..
    You say there is a $5000k rebate and $1000 off?
    Just don't blame the i3 for your poor decision-making, you knew the car only had an EV range of 121 predicted miles when you purchased the car, did you think the range would magically increase? Did your daily routine change since you purchased the car that requires more range?
    You could simply get the 120Ah battery version i3S (used ones are now available).
    I do appreciate you and appreciate the upload. I live in NoHo too and hope to do EV car reviews as well.
    Good luck and I hope you find an EV that suits your needs.

      Lol I have plenty of reviews saying how good the i3 is, this one is showing you the small issues I had and where not having a warranty going into the future could be a real liability.

    Get a Chevy Bolt EV 2020 or 2021 new. It's cheap $19k-$27K w/ all the discounts. I have a 2020. Has 259 miles range. Been pretty reliable since 2017 for others.

    My i3 is outta here as soon as I can. The Rex sucks due to emissions testing and the range is booboo.

    • @raysyd5643
      @raysyd5643  3 года назад +3

      I really didn't think about the emissions testing either haha. I literally never use the REX, I didn't buy an ev to put gas in it you know. The i3 is great, just as time goes on mid 200 mile range will be standard on EV's and I think that may crush resale value of these even more.

    • @mamadouaziza2536
      @mamadouaziza2536 3 года назад +7

      Why did you even buy an i3 knowing its range would be an issue? And you had to know any i3 with a gas engine will need to have a smog test? The i3 isn't the issue, it you who is booboo...

    • @raysyd5643
      @raysyd5643  3 года назад +2

      @@mamadouaziza2536 The range isn't an issue for me, but double the range would give you less range anxiety. I think I bought the i3 for the reason most people do, it was a cost vs what I wanted equation and cars with more range were above that cost. The i3 REX isnt really a motor since its not connected to the wheels, its a generator, so yes that surprised me.

    • @mamadouaziza2536

      @@raysyd5643
      Well, you know if you simply want more range out of your i3, just enable Hold State of Charge once the battery drops to 75% and your range will double.
      One of the issues with this car and or any EV in the city of Los Angeles is because half of driving is done on the freeway at 75 to 85mph and driving like this will reduce range quickly. Also, because of the sheer size of Los Angeles, the distance of going from one end to the other will reduce range drastically...
      Luckily there are hundreds of free Level 2 chargers everywhere and of course Level 3 chargers.

    • @raysyd5643
      @raysyd5643  3 года назад +1

      @@mamadouaziza2536 I do know that, I actually own the i3 and have hacked mine so that I can do that. I have no interest in using gas when I bought an electric car unless I'm in an emergency situation.
