      @scrubnub6203 24 дня назад +288

To be fair that vow is commonly misunderstood. It was that his vow traded an arm for his life directly, it was a cursed energy reinforcement vow that stated in exchange for not protecting his arm at all, he would protect the rest of his body to a greater degree and that happened to save his life. He effectively just gambled that losing an arm would be enough to protect himself. It was an indirect trade that worked out for him.

    • @beywheelzhater8930
      @beywheelzhater8930 24 дня назад +4

The biggest problem with the binding vows Sukuna uses is the fact that it is often used to retroactively explain things rather than set them up
“In exchange for one instant world slash he now has to do a chant with every following one”
That would be cool if he used world slash beforehand multiple times, showing what a menace it is without the chant and explaining the need for the instant slash so it didn’t feel like as asspull as he offscreened Gojo. Instead we just saw the chant as how world slash worked before the binding vow revealed
“Fire arrow can only hit one target except in the domain where it can chain react explode everything”
Neat! Would be nice if we got to see that fire arrow struggled when being used or got told that it works by detonating a target and were shown it can only hit one thing BEFORE the explanation why. Instead it’s just a huge info dump
“Sukuna’s domain can only let living things freely pass in and out of it to keep all the dust in”
Since when could Sukuna do this? Is this a binding vow? Is this just something he can do? Would have been a lot better if we saw that objects couldn’t leave BEFORE being told
Sukuna’s vows would be FAAAAR more acceptable if we saw the full story. People don’t go around calling Hakari’s vow an asspull because leaving your arm defenseless to reinforce the rest of your body makes sense and is a fair trade off. Sukuna’s on the other hand feel like they traded very little for the most W upsides ever because of how they are presented narratively
It doesn’t help that the consequence to a binding vow is, as far as we know, the vow just being reverted. It begs the question of why people don’t do the “one time super move in exchange for something else” and then just immediately break said vow because, as far as we know, there is no reason you can’t

After the binding vow it was slow outside the domain and could only be used on one person, and inside the domain it was faster. Importantly the big explosion in 259 is not just furnace. @julioforessi1336 24 дня назад +14

Actually I don't know where but I seem to remember that you can't break a binding vow with yourself, like you just don't have that possibility depending on how you made it. The exchanges between two parts make sense since it's a trade yet to be made in a tangible way, Sukuna could have decided to hurt people during that minute that he was in control (bullshit all the same because it didn't include Yuji but that is a Gege problem), that also goes for the pact that Kenny and Mechamaru did, since Mahito could well have decided not to enact it and he would have been punished in some way.
In contrast, Nanami couldn't have broken his binding vow since so doing would mean that it never had validity in the first place, that would just be a net gain by giving nothing in return. He gave up his 100% potential during the day so that from that day forward he would attain some extra power during the overtime hours, which just becomes a permanent thing thereon.
The problem with Sukuna is that Gege is using binding vows with tradeoffs that don't really seem to carry any weight because we only ever get to see what Sukuna gains, like, up to this point he'd never even had a reason to use Furnace on multiple people, nor did it seem like it would have been more effective than what he was doing already, it simply served to explain why he never did rather than something that was really detrimental to him. Even worse is the case in the fight with Gojo, where he gave up the stupid hand sign in exchange for being able to basically one-shot the strongest character in the series without him seeing it coming, which obviously will seem like bullshit because it is when you execute it that way.

Prior to the binding vow, the only condition to use the World Slash was just the enmaten hand sign. It is only after the binding vow that he needs the conditions of chants. Because of the binding vow, the requirement of World Slash is 3 arms (one to aim the trajectory of the slash and two to do the Enmaten hand sign) and he needs to chant. It is worth noting that World Slash would be COMPLETELY unusable if it wasn't for Sukuna's true form, and is also the reason why he can't use the World Slash now since he only has two arms. The fact that the move is so telegraphed is the reason why people like Maki and Kusakabe (although Sukuna basically told him he was going to do it) were able to defend against it before Sukuna could actually use it and hit them.

@@numbers1476 No, originally he had to do both Enma hand signs and the chants, BUT he was missing a hand and couldnt do the signs. So he imposed a binding vow to let him skip the requirements to do it one time, in exchange for having to aim it with his palm. and yes, its pretty confusing, it does seem like it says he added both chants and aiming part. But actually, it first talks about the hand signs and the hand signs alone bc thats the only part that matters, he could complete the chants, but not the hand signs so they only mention those. then when explaining the full binding vow, it makes enphasis on the aiming part, as in: "Sukuna now needs to complete both chants and signs... *and* guide it with his palm". Idk about you, but to me, that indicates that he only added the last part in, not the entire thing. Plus, it wouldnt make much sense either for such a powerful slash to only require one hand sign to activate at first, or for Sukuna to need to add that much when he has been getting stuff almost for free every other time.

@@rockargen9591 I see where the confusion comes from. I'll just leave it as a difference in interpretation since there really isn't a way for me to go against it. I only came to the conclusion I did because the explanation within the manga completely voids the chants until the last part where it describes the requirements after the binding vow.
Although, to be fair, there are a lot of powerful techniques that only have one requirement, such as Comedian, Limitless (only in the case for Gojo), Black Bird Manipulation (although only due to binding vows), and Bom Ba Ye (which should've killed Kenjaku).

They happen in a vacuum and disregard how the user will take advantage at the moment. Makes sense to exchange having to put a new restriction on something every time you use it for a one time buff (no signs), sure. But in the context of the fight at that moment you’re exchanging future inconvenience FOR YOUR FUCKING LIFE.

jesus, why does no one understand the world slash binding vow?
A technique not requiring hand signs or chanting has been pretty standard throughout the series. There's plenty of hand signs floating around, but chanting for a normal usage of a technique is non-existent. Plus, we see later (the chapter before the world slash binding vow was revealed, notably) that Sukuna can activate his techniques without moving a muscle. Giving up advanced, no-chants-or-hand-signs activation of a technique to use it without any once seems pretty fair to me. It's actually a fairly low-stakes vow, because most of the work was developing world slash itself. The only thing the vow needed to do was get it off before Gojo started kicking Sukuna's teeth in.
Also, he didn't even make the binding vow about Furnace during the Shinuku Showdown. He used the exact same attack on Mahoraga in Shibuya; it's not new.
His other binding vows during the fight with Gojo were all about manipulating Sukuna's domain, which Gojo also did prodigiously.
Sukuna has still probably used binding vows more and more actively than anyone else in the series. Why? Oh, I don't know, maybe the goddamn King of Curses, the man with the best understanding of the heart of jujutsu sorcery, is better than everyone else present at Jujutsu sorcery? That is why he was able to kill Gojo, you know.

Supposedly binding vows aren't contextual. It isn't based on what matters to you either. In theory, sacrifing your life on the verge of death is as effective as normal. However there are two exact opposite uses of heavenly restriction that makes no sense. Mechamaru subverted his penalty and lost nothing, Maki slightly increased her penalty and got a massive power up. At this point I'm convinced binding vows work at the character's interpretation rather than any standard.

Gojo didnt use binding vows, it was manipulating the way he constructed the barrier of his domain, something anyone skilled enough can do. Dagon was even doing this in S1 as a cursed womb. Sukuna on the other hand, does need binding vows bc his domain works differently, not only does output affect it (unlike Gojo or Dagon cuz their sure hit isnt really an attack), but it also has no barrier and affects everything. changing the size of *his* domain is extremely important since it *does* affect who is caught in it. But Gojo's domain doesnt do this, expanding the barrier would just make a bigger ball on the outside and bring him no benefit (cuz he cant just make someone enter it by making it bigger, unlike Sukuna).

Jjk binding vows hold no weight in hunter x hunter the main 2 we see hold huhe ramifications, kurapika is slowly chipping away his lifespan with each use of emperor time and Gon lost his nen entirely because of his, in jjk you can use a binding vow so fluidly and without repercussion. You can even do dubious things like give up a percentage of attack potency to increase effective range or time duration making essentially any attacking technique infinitely moldable to any situation theyre too flexible in my opinion. It makes me wonder why no one else abuses them, like if a characters energy technique of some sort (lets just say a hypothetical blast) was going to miss its target whats stopping the sorcerer from enacting a binding vow to drop its power to double its size so now it hits, nothing really. Binding vows like the ones Miwa used against Kenjaku and Sukuna did to kill Gojo are the exception. And they are too serious for the sorcerer to dare violate it. But the ones where Sukuna says that Malevolent Shrine should be stronger because it allows for a escape round, are mental ginastics sorcerers use to adjust their power to their circunstances. @numbers1476 24 дня назад +1

Sukuna has made 3 binding vows thus far within the battle. I'll try to explain some of them as well as what he sacrificed.
The first binding vow that Sukuna did was to use the World Slash instantly, in exchange for extra requirements to activate the slash. He basically needs three arms (one to point the trajectory of the slash and two to make the Enmaten hand sign) and needs to chant in order to pull it off. It is because of this binding vow that Sukuna can no longer use this move since he only has two hands, and thus lost one of his most powerful techniuqes. The World Slash's nerfs are also why Maki and Kusakabe (although Kusakabe was told by Sukuna that he was gonna use it) was able to properly defend against it.
The second binding vow that Sukuna made was to sacrifice the ability to use Furnace on multiple targets and that he can only use the technique in 1v1 situations in order to strengthen the speed and range of the technique. The only time that this doesn't apply is when Sukuna is using Domain Expansion. It is worth noting that because of this binding vow, Sukuna can no longer use Furnace anymore since he is unable to do anymore Domain Expansions (hopefully) and because he is almost always in a 1v2+ scenario.
The third binding vow was related to opening his Domain in the first place. Honestly, I can't give you an answer of what Sukuna sacrified since Gege doesn't tell us. This is the only binding vow that isn't explained in good detail and is the most valid when it comes with people's issue with binding vows.
This is not anything to defend binding vows and their use of just being plot devices, but he is still at least sacrificing SOMETHING and it is impacting his performance and his future performance.

    • @obe1_kenobi

@@numbers1476 Yea, I'm aware of all of that.
I'm perfectly fine with what Sukuna lost in the World Slash BV. I'd much prefer it was revealed earlier since it left people wondering how he'd used it vs Gojo, but I'm fine with it.
The Kamino BV is unnecessary and weird. Not only was he giving up something we didn't know he had to begin with (giving up Kamino's potential for AoE damage), but this wasn't even needed in the first place. Gege could've removed this BV entirely and nothing changes. Just make Kamino not suck ass in range and speed (we've only seen it used twice before now and it has never been dodged so this would still make sense).
Sukuna would still have to use Cleave and Dismantle to unlock Kamino and can still use it in his DE explosion attack.
If anything, the BV should've been that Sukuna intentionally locks Kamino behind Cleave and Dismantle in exchange for the same benefits.
And we agree on the domain expansion BV, nothing more needs to be said.

@@axis1247 Mainly because that statement was made before it was confirmed that Sukuna could use his Domain Expansion again lol. I was simply making an educated guess and assumed that the Domain Expansion took a lot of CE from him and he couldn't do it again, and thus making the Binding Vow go into effect.

@@obe1_kenobi Your suggestion of BV still falls under your issue of "giving up something retroactively that we didn't know he had" and "nothing changes". Even then, it doesn't really matter much because that is the reason why Gege tells us what the BV was so we know what he had previously and what he gained, especially since it isn't inconsistent and aligns with how it was used previously for the most part. It is something that is essentially just a non-issue.

Not to take away from your video - super funny and I liked it a lot - but this is going to be a hot take, and I could be wrong, but the reason why Sukuna is the binding vow merchant is because he isn't something that can be measured like the other characters in the cast.
While Yuji is treated like every other character (if not worse) despite being the main character, thematically Sukuna is *the exact opposite* - the story intentionally caters to him. Sukuna represents the pinnacle of humanity's hedonism, whereas the heroes represent humanity's faith in ideals. You got it right when you said "everything is important to him" - he is a metaphorical representation of humanity's greed borne from their desires to satisfy themselves (which is why he personifies the atomic bomb). The story caters to Sukuna the same way history catered to the only users of the atomic bomb (us).
Not withstanding the thematic elements - Sukuna's Cursed Technique is splitting - the most precise split is atomic fission.
I'm pretty sure that divine flame (or furnace) is a nuclear warhead. The reason Sukuna doesn't sacrifice anything is because to increase the destructive power of a nuclearreaction
(i.e. the migration from the "gun" method of detonating fissle material, I think it's literally referring to the implosion method of the Fatman) you sacrifice a little bit of AoE for infinite destructive power.
That's not a property of binding vows, it's a property of nuclear physics. JJK is just co-opting it (it even says it in the footnote when it says "Science Consultant: Kurare"). I'm not entirely sure, though, because the official scans say "thermobaric" which implies a vacuum explosion with some sort of gas... But needing the hand signs for "cleave" and "dismantle" doesn't really make sense in that context.

I do think they explained Sukuna's chanting and hand signs. Somewhere in an early chapter/episode they said he gave himself extra arms and an extra mouth to be able to chant and sign for himself mid-combat.
I also think, yes, Sukuna is bs'ing throughout the fight, but he is also doing exactly what you want a "lawyer sorcerer" to do. Vowing to never use Furnace without the domain to maximise damage makes sense since domains are supposed to be an all out attack that leaves you vulnerable afterwards. Within the logic of the show, it's like saying "I will only use this versatile flame move after doing my sure-fire hit instakill combo". It doesn't make sense, but it's a great minmaxxing strat against harder to kill opponents like Itadori, Gojo, etc.
I think the vows and Sukuna's way of handling makes more sense when you process the scope. Man's lived for centuries and will continue to live for centuries. Sure, he's bs'ing his way through this fight, but he's complicating all future fights (decades down the line) and still keeping in mind all his ancient little vows he's been following. It's a bureaucratic nightmare that he's casually adjusting mid-fight.

Finally someone mentions how wasted higurumas entire character setup was!!!
The lawyer turned sorcerer, the ONLY one kenjaku found intriguing after living 100s of years seeing techniques and sorcerers, knowing of all the CG players new AND reincarnated, having extensive knowledge of the dream realm and other mythical shit no ones even heard of and all he had to his name was a "instant death" hax DE that was easily speed blitzed and accomplished nothing but taking sukunas tool, which he got like 2 chapters earlier anyway 😐
Think of all the cool vows he could use and abuse coming from his profession. Stripping ppl of CE, limiting their techniques, amplifying CE costs for enemies, forcing enemies into easily broken binding vows, using vows to learn techniques, using vows to strengthen techniques vs sukuna specifically, vows to amp his own CE/CT eficacy at the cost of never using CE after sukuna, so many infinite options that would actually make Kenjaku's foreshadowing make sense but instead his biggest moment is getting compared to gojo and subsequently being packed up in 2 chapters 🤦🏾
I didn't expect him to win or even be the win con against sukuna but if fucking TAKABA of all ppl was the key to killing Kenjaku you'd think he'd do something even slightly comparable

Most characters are not smart enough to know how to use binding vows like sukuna, just like his Jujutsu is on another level too not to mention most of his vows are with himself
