@@SamsTrains Shipping costs are not cheap to the USA from British retailers. Haven't you seen the postage applied to locomotives being shipped to you from America? If you do choose the cheapest option for shipping, it comes on the slowest freighter across the sea. I prefer buying my Hornby and Bachman British railway products from a Canadian jobber, train show retailer. This retailer can get the product here within a week using Canadian Post/US Mail. Personally, my top 5 favorite locos that your reviewed have to be the:
5: Hornby LNER P2. While its motor is kind of sub-par and it's a little rigid, the P2 Is my favorite Gresley Design and the TTS sound really makes up for the flaws!
4: Hornby Duke of Gloucester: Again, while it does have a sub-par motor, the Loco's detail is very good for the price. Also the Duke of Gloucester is my favorite British Steamer.
3: Hornby LNER A4 Mallard. Great detail and awesome packaging as well as smooth running.
2: Hornby Princess Coronation. Another superb model made by hornby! Excellent paint and detail. It is also my favorite British streamliner.
1: Hornby GWR King Class. Hornby could not have done better with this design than they did. With Superb Detail and Paint, Great Motor, and TTS Sound, Hornby really did justice to my favorite GWR Engine!

The Bachmann J72 was originally a Palitoy Mainline starter set loco in 1978 so saying that the tooling is very old is an understatement.
If it was a motorcycle or car, it would be classified as "historic" by the DVLA and therefore not require an MOT or road tax.

I'm not sure what my worst five models of your collection would be, but I think I can pick out my top five models if only because I love watching them run so much. So here goes nothing.

    4. Flying Scotsman
    3. Thomas the Tank Engine
    2. Olton Hall

I got the railroad Scotsman in a set from my aunt back in very early 2000’s. I think it was my first actually. It still runs despite never being serviced. I don’t mind seeing it on here too much, understandable. Not sure if that one was but mine is tender driven and quite loud. But obviously it’s got lots of emotional importance.

Good to see the Hattons locos up at the top there - I especially love that industrial Barclay loco, the real life locos are everywhere in the UK and they have a lot of character.
I was definitely not surprised by the O2 though, and the DJ Models J94 was *very* deserving of its spot. I was really excited about that little 0-6-0, since the Dapol tooling is getting a bit old, and they... Sorta missed the whole point of an Austerity designed saddle tank loco that can run anywhere.
Great video as always! Happy Holidays!

For your worst locomotives that you've looked at for 2018 the 2 ones that I had to agree on are the Hornby Railroad Flying Scotsman due to the really expensive price tag for a Hornby Railroad model and The Heljan O2 Tango due to the bad detail and missing bits of parts.

I have taken a look at all of these now and have to say that your assessment of each is bang on.... for me what I want is an "elegant " looking machine, because often that's what these steam locos were, really beautiful pieces of heavy, very heavy, engineering, so yes for me your assessments were bang on and I cannot fault the choices you have made.

  • @JamesCleevely

I quite agree about the DJM Austerity, it is a huge let down. I got a Weymss livery one in the Hattons sale, and it cannot pull more than about 2 or 3 coaches. The motor is not powerful enough, and lacks a flywheel, which means power is reduced. The overcomplicated gear system also adds drag which reduces the power, and the solid connecting rods limit the side play in the wheelsets, which adds yet more strain in the corners.
I am either going to build a new chassis or modify the existing one next year, as the model has so much more potential.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  5 лет назад

Thanks James - yes not at all keen on that model, very under-powered and quite toy-like!

Have to agree about the Heljan ' Tango '. I was warned that they were crap, but in Hatton's
sale, the price was too good to miss. Mine arrived undamaged. Put it on my railway to run
it in, it had not travelled far and it stopped dead. The reason?, Excessive side play in the front
pair of driving wheels allows the coupling rod to come into contact with the rest of the motion
and lock it up. This it continues to do, even on a gentle curve.
This model should be recalled by Heljan as not fit for purpose.

Very interesting list Sam, obviously due to your experience with the Heljan 02 it’s not surprising it ended up where it did. (Yours was literally in pieces)
My experience with mine so far has been ok, no real issues performance wise but build quality is an issue for sure, fortunately I bought mine in the Hattons Sale so a small price to pay. But then again I have 4 bachmann 9Fs to take up the slack when mine gives up the ghost ;-)
I’m surprised you didn’t include the Duchess? That was a truly great model.
If I may make a recommendation to you for 2019 try a bachmann 9F, you won’t be let down. Obviously new ones are pricey but most 2nd hand ones average at £90-100 on a certain online market place and they’re worth the money in my opinion.
Anyways thanks for a great video and sharing your thoughts on the models...... Now I must look into the packetts had my eye on them for a while as now I’m very tempted.
    Cheers Ross.

The worst loco I ever encounted was a little Diesel-shunter from Märklin in my childhood. It was new then and was running worse than the 30-40yrs old locos I had from my great-uncle from Märklin. One day as a child, I played around with the diesel and it started to smoke and my friends loved it: " Oh it got a smoke generator". No it did not, it was just like that this loco was getting hot while running and making trouble all time....One day the damn thing started burning and I burned my hand and the plastic was melting down... Well thats the worst loco I ever encounterd and it was a Märklin.

@@SamsTrains Well back then in the 1990s, the märklin company made an outsource to china there where bad+cheaply models made ( I think my diesel was made there). Now they came back to Europe (Germany+Hungary) and make proper models. All in All, I heard from friends, that they just buy old stock from ebay, refurbish them, and say, these are still the best models! I cant judge that, I have no model railway myself at the moment and just know Märklin back from my early childhood.

My picks for REAL steam trains (Scale of 1/10)
    '
Dutches of Hamplton | 10/10 because it is streamlined, awesome cab, and the front can open up.
Mallard | 10/10 for the great speed, look, and colour.
UP Big Boy | 9/10 for it's strength, but not 10/10 because I don't really like american locos.
City of Trero | 9/10 for it's design, age, and the super-model looks. But not 10/10 just because it's cab is so exposed.
Black 5 | 8/10 for its good looking colour, but not 10/10 because it represents Henery, and I dont really like TTTE :p
UP Challenger | 6/10 because it is american. AGain, I don't like american locos, and looks like Big boy but a bit more small.
14XX | 5/10 because I'm not a fan of tank engines. And it represents Oliver from TTTE.
Daylight | 3/10 because it's american, it's a oil burning loco, and has a horn.
E2 Tank engine, 2/10 because it represents Thomas from TTTE
Now for my least favorite engine of all.
School's Class Cheltnem | 1/10 all because it looks like a crappy fersion of the Flying Scottsman

I agree with the Peckett choice. Simply stunning...I'm adding an industrial siding to justify this exquisite model. Sadly, Hornby also produced the worst loco I have purchased in the last couple of years; Schools Class "Epsom" was in pieces in the box when I unpacked it. Thankfully the retailer was accommodating and gave me a partial refund when they said they couldn't get another. I have glued the parts back on and it seems ok, but I'll always feel a bit dubious about this one. Happy New Year to you and your viewers, Sam.

Yes the P2 is a lovely engine - but the quality of that model let it down; no die-cast construction, cheap 3-pole motor, no proper bearings, no painted cab, no sprung buffers etc - it's a lovely model, but I don't reckon it's one of the best! If Hornby did it properly, it'd be amazing! :D

Every model is little better than a toy, because they are all a full 7" under scale gauge - 16.5mm instead of 18.83mm. They also have wheel flanges the size of a small country. I'll never understand how folks can obsess over tiny details when such glaring, obvious flaws are all conveniently ignored. Would you tolerate a loco which was 14% too short I wonder?

haha I agree with you - that's tradition I suppose... it's an issue we've had for years that was never corrected!

The 02 was a fantastic model. I have 3, with one being made into a 02/2. Clearly by the comments, you can see the difference between a railway modeller and somebody that buys and plonks.

I would suggest looking at my review.... if you feel the same once having watched it, then I think you'll find it isn't me that's the inadequate modeller!

hi my name is Arthur I am 8 years old and I am just starting out. I would like to know which oil is the best to use on my locomotives. Also which is the best DCC controller. Thank you.

Hi Arthur! The best oil I've used is Hemline Machine oil - available very cheap on Amazon! You'll also want a gaugemaster oiling pen - Ebay might be your best bet for that!

We all knew the top 3 ! Hattons shoulld make a flying Scotsman Oringinal type and the new restored one with smoke deflecters.
I wish Hornby would do all there locos like the pecket .

haha definitely! And that would be fantastic - I wonder why they didn't do that?!

There were definitely some locos I think should be in there: Bachmann/Rails Class 66s and just diesels in general.

Thanks for the comment! Did you mean those for top 5 or bottom 5? To be honest, having seen the Hatton's class 66, the Bachmann ones pale in comparison! :O

    Dear sam's trains
The peckett to me seems like Hattons material .Also i prefer the gray p class livery , but do ever think about getting another livery of the barkley ?
    A veiwer

Hey Jeremy - yes the Peckett was similar to the Hatton's models! I would be tempted to try another Barclay, but even more tempted to get another P class! :D
