    So glad you reacted to this. The original "One" is among my favorite U2 songs. MJB's involvement took it to a whole new level. U2's collaboration with BB King on "When Love Comes to Town" is worth checking out too. The blues are the roots of rock and roll.

    • @ginapetriello2848
      @ginapetriello2848 2 года назад +4

      Yes I agree this version of "one" with Mary J Blige took it to a whole new level indeed because I never listened 2 the lyrics before, heard on the radio 4 years & years but never understood the lyrics until Mary put her spin on it & my eyes were opened up. St Luke's United Methodist Church in Orlando Florida did a concert of only U2 songs the contemporary music Minister back then sounded just like Bono & the professional musicians around Disney Universal & SeaWorld who recreated the unique sound of U2 putting Bono's songs into the context of church opened my eyes 2 how many many musicians believe in Jesus but many people who listen to the radio don't make that same connection that we have to carry each other brothers and sisters love each other and live the teachings of Jesus by giving our hand to help others, humans, creatures & the land plants & oceans of Earth, the hand of God through our hands and through our heart and Minds but with love as the focus for healing & saving the Earth by saving the humans 1st, teaching forgiveness love & understanding; we have the awesome power of God within each one of us we have to start loving God more than our selfish selves in our bodies of human existence destroying each other & our planet. Our soul's purpose on Earth is much larger than we realize. Our soul was sent here for a reason & our soul will live on into eternity so we need to focus while we are alive on Earth today. . NOW, as we look in the mirror when we wake up in the morning we need 2 see that glow of perfect light around our head to see into the mirror and look into your eyes to see your soul as you look at yourself. I am taking baby steps at age 55 as a single person who never had children my focus my whole life has been in survival mode & being brainwashed that I need to be married in order to be happy but this is not true. Happiness comes from within I am learning to feel whole even now after 30 years of being divorced of a 4-year broken marriage. So this song "One" is a wake-up call today Thursday November 4, 2021, even though I heard this song so many times over the years and even I heard this mary-j-blige version months ago today I'm hearing it with new eyes the one love in the song my love of God and God's love for me not the romantic kind of love with a partner which is what I was brought up to believe even in my parents broken marriage and my mother stayed and stayed and stayed and sacrificed her life for her 3 children "till death do us part" with a cheating husband and thought as Jesus did to forgive and forgive the sins of the father that he would still love her and choose to stay with her as she chose my father for 23 years. But he did not love her unconditionally the way God loves us but my mother gave unconditional love like God to her children but not to herself. What I learned from my parents mistakes is that we have to love ourselves and stop abusing ourselves so that we can love God more than ourselves and then with that one love me and God I can fulfill my true purpose in heaven which is on Earth now to carry each other brothers and sisters..

      This is my favourite U2 song. From their album Joshua Tree. Was 19 when this song came out, i had it on cassette. Those were the days, most kids nowadays won't have a clue what to do with one lol.

      @@ricasears5910 Great song for sure (the original is actually on Achtung Baby, not Joshua Tree) but BOTH albums are incredible. I've heard Mary J. on her own but as a U2 fan when she did this with them it blew me away. Power and Grace at the same time - it's like cutting onions when she sings "You ask me to enter but then you make me crawl and I can't keep holding on to what you've got when all you've got is hurt."

    U2 was in the audience when MJB performed 'No Drama' on the Grammys a few years back. She had the whole room on their feet. I think that's one of the reasons U2 wanted to collaborate with her. They were visibly moved by her performance.

I love U2, but the way they basically stood back and let her shine is brilliant. Showed a ton of respect. The way they blended their voices was wonderful, but let's be honest. Mary killed this. 🔥

    I will always love U2's original version as it is one of the few songs that can make me cry just from listening to it but this version is well done also. According to Casey Kasem, who was famous for counting down the top 40 songs in America on the radio every week, this song was written at a time when U2 was struggling to finish the album that would become Achtung Baby. The band members were thinking they may have gone as far together as they could go musically and thoughts of breaking up were real...but this song came together and it basically kept the group together.
    When I first saw the Rodney King riots on TV I turned the TV off because I'd seen all I could stand to watch and I turned on the radio. "One" was the first song I heard and I really, really listened to it for the 1st time and I just broke down crying because of the lyrics. Tears fells down my face watching this version as well. It can't replace the original version for me however but music is a gift to everyone on their own terms so I'm more than fine with anyone who likes this version better.

    U2 is one of the greatest rock and roll bands of all time, both lyrically and musically and this is one of my favorite songs of theirs, so much meaning and emotion. I remember hearing the version with Mary J and she does it as much justice as the original. Great together, Bono and the band gave up the song to her and she sang it with the emotion and respect it deserves.
