    Please keep it coming. Right now I'm using both. Mostly due to me being lazy to edit my projects in freecad while they are for 3dprinting anyway.
    Ohnestly I think I'm starting to like Freecad more than fusion, there are maybe some features that this cad doesnt like, but I dont bump into same soft lock I had in fusion while using freecad.
    It may be harder at first but oh boy it's powerhouse. If you cant do something out of the box you bet your ass that addons will make it.
    Also I'm not pro in any means. I have only around something more than a year expirience in using any CAD software at all.

    I just started freecad and so far i like version 0.21. it reminds me of solid works 2020.
    However, the newest dev version of freecad is amazing with the new sketch tools and the ability to type dimensions in as you draw the sketch. Plus realthinder, one of the devs has made some great fixes to the naming topology.

    Please keep going with the series! Don't worry about negative comments. I agree that freecad has problems, but as it is open source, we can fix many of the hiccups, even if it will take next year or two.

      I am not a CAD user (I am recently learning little by little) but I have used Linux and open source for some time. AFAIK, people got pissed over Autodesk, so it will be a good opportunity to get more support to FreeCAD. Remember that there are other tools like OpenSCAD and Solvespace that could (or not) be useful for you.
      Support Open Source by using it and recommend it to other people.

    FreeCAD is not garbage, I migrated from garbage F360 to free cad. I honestly regret not getting earlier and instead messing with F360 before, since the last garbage update from F360 I'm done with it and it setts me back for a couple of months to recover. Your channel is the best so far, bringing me up and running again. I heavily used Parametric modeling in F360. I was constraint by the useable features that were free on the previous version of F360 which aren't free anymore, so I ditched that garbage software once and for all. Keep it up the good work !!! 👍 Don't let yourself down by the haters.

      I tried to use FreeCAD for a couple hours and my experience was nothing but frustration, whereas Fusion was a breeze to pick up and start being productive in. It also doesn't help that the user interface looks like shit and it lacks a lot of the polish that one would expect from a production piece of user software (I do software dev for a living btw). Hope that helps you understand why some people say it is not an amazing piece of software.

    I think my biggest pet peeve over FreeCAD is the ridiculous defaults that make it very unintuitive out of the box. That and being able to display the names of the tools in the toolbar, rather than having only the icon, would allow folks to identify what tool is what- especially if they're coming straight from Fusion. Sure the wording might be different, but it's gotta be better than a very obscure icon.

    • @BrodieFairhall
      @BrodieFairhall  8 месяцев назад

      There is a lot of talk of the UI being completely redesigned, which will be fantastic. Fusion's large icons with text, is fantastic for beginners, but having to open a dropdown to get to a lot of tools, paired with the lack of context based shortcut keys can become very frustrating when you've been working with it for a while. Something in-between would be fantastic.
      Something you might like is the Modern UI Add-on, it adds a ribbon style toolbar, all icons are accompanied with text and you can customise almost every aspect of it.

    A shame there is not a way to increase quality of mesh as part of exporting to stl or other slicer compatible file format in the export dialog or freecad settings. I love freecad but it's sometimes so convoluted which makes it hard to get things done ☹️

    • @BrodieFairhall

    3:42 The moment I realize I can use a lot less contruction line in FreeCAD
    15:30 This is a bit of a disappointment, when I use the mirror tool it is what I actually need, I don't want to recreate that sketch again. The "all powerful" symmetry tool doesn't help with it either since the mirrored sketch doesn't have the control points selectable, even if I can it would be tedious work.

    • @BrodieFairhall
      @BrodieFairhall  2 года назад +1

      FreeCAD 0.20 has a Centre Rectangle tool now, which basically does exactly what I did with the symmetry tool to centre the square.
      As for sketch mirroring, I basically never use this tool at all. Really I'd sketch half of the heart, make the pocket then mirror the pocket instead.

    • @someonestolemyname
      @someonestolemyname 2 года назад

      @@BrodieFairhall It is probably because I like having my sketch match exactly with my solid model like a cross-section instead of spending more time in manipulating the solids. However since it cannot extrude into multiple bodes either, it might actually be moot.
      I still think it is a deficiency that it does not constrain it, but I can't ask for more if I can't code it in.

  • @kendarr
    @kendarr Год назад

    As for exporting, I'm trying to use CAD for game art, yea I know its wierd but the parametric thing, and infinite resolution makes me feel like sculpting hard-surface, anways. I exported the model as is as glTF, thats an open source standard and it works great for blender, the mesh as always is abismal, but it looks identical to freecad, I'll have to retopo anyways, so depending on what you're usnig the model, just to render it out, maybe thats a better export method for complex meshes.

    • @BrodieFairhall
      @BrodieFairhall  Год назад +1

      You could try using the other mesh conversion algorithms / tweak the settings when you convert the solid to a mesh. (The Mephisto algorithm, which is used for prepping models for FEA might work better for you here if your model has lots of curves etc.)
      Unfortunately though, humans are way better at this than the algorithm, which is why most complex game assets get retopologised by hand anyway.
      It's been a while since I've done any of that in blender and I know the built in tools are much better, but you could also look at the "retopo flow" blender plugin as it might work well for you too.

    • @kendarr
      @kendarr Год назад +1

      @@BrodieFairhall Yea!, I will try to model something for my portifolio, and use the mesh options to extract both high and low poly mesh.

      @@BrodieFairhall Worth noting that, depending on what the model will be used for in a game, the topology being horrible does not matter, if its just a static mesh, as long as the shadding isn't bugged, it usually works, not pretty, not ideal, but it works

      @dsnyder05 3 года назад

      @@BrodieFairhall I think you are referring to the topography naming issue? The parametric modelling video is great! I guess I'm still having a hard time thinking in terms of dataum planes and drawing on the origin and offsetting them to various faces. It all seems so cludgy. It doesn't seem too bad for a simple box, but for more complicated geometry, it seems like it could be a real issue. It sounded like you are going to do a more in-depth look at the topography naming issue. I look forward to it, and look forward to more complicated models, modeled the "correct" way, because most on RUclips seem to be going about it all in the wrong sense by referencing off of body features.

    • @BrodieFairhall
      @BrodieFairhall  3 года назад +2

      @@dsnyder05You can just select a face and create a new sketch on it, but yes, you may end up with a topographical naming issue if you make any changes that could cause the creation of an extra or loss of a face on the body before a sketch.
      RealThunder's Linkstage 3 build has the "new robust topology model" that deals with this problem and has a bunch of other new features like being able to split objects/have multiple objects in a body etc. Depending on stability (users finding and reporting bugs) all of this will likely end up in the next version of FreeCAD. I'd definitely check it out to see all the cool changes!
      I do intend on making a video about the topological naming problem, how to model correctly to avoid it right and also how to cheat/quickly fix issues when you can't be bothered doing it right.
