    Great explanation and video explanation.the float valve setup is a key component for others who want to build their own systems. The comparative data from the different system variations was fascinating. Yield is a great measure of success.

      Hey Matt :) ..My facebook account got closed by face book so no more point of contact. FB says they think I'm too young to have a FB account and that I have to be over 13 years old.
      So much for their facial recognition tech seeing as though I'm 48 years old, lol ..and the blinding fact that my FB account was 14 years old. Personally I think they were BS'ing to get a photo grab of my drivers licence ..so I didn't give them it, so they closed the account.

    Very interesting video, I really like the gutter comparison.
    I've been growing hot peppers in Kratky for a few years now and in online groups I'm always informing people that water ingress into the reservoir isn't good. Most come back telling me an overflow hole is enough to stop drowning and I point out not wanting diluted nutrients.
    With hot peppers giving the luxury of a single stem, I make rain poncho's for the containers to stop the rain getting in. The poncho stops about 98% ish of the rain.
    Could you tell me what NPK you use for Ginger?

    Wow I can see so many benefits from this simple pump free method with the air space, The commercial hydroponics system bucket lids make use of the upside down pot at the bottom of the large attached net pot but I hadn't thought of it being used in this way with the nutrient sitting level with the very bottom of the net pot with the auto refill from float valve awww seems a bit of a waste for me to use it as a bucket in a bucket poor mans dutch bucket, seems so obvious after seeing this video, thank you for making all your awesome videos!!!

    Thanks for the video. I just said I wanted to try to grow ginger., but the growing time has me a little daunted. If I was to start my seeds in mid-February under lights, the most I could hope for is 8 months of growing time. Do you think that is enough time to get decent results? I live in zone 7b just above the 45th parallel.

    If the rhizome was allowed to be submerged, but the water was oxygenated sufficiently, what issues do you think that might cause? Would the rhizomes absorb nitrate or some other negative effect?

    • @growkratky5558
      @growkratky5558  3 года назад +4

      Hi Jeb. We never tried growing submerged rhizomes, so I really wouldn't know what to expect. However, it was possible to grow ginger elevated up 5 cm on upside-down nursery trays without growing medium and where the nutrient solution level was just below the nursery trays, so they were not submerged. Rhizome yields from this 'no growing medium treatment' were much lower than when ginger was grown in growing medium www.ctahr.hawaii.edu/hawaii/downloads/Experimental%20Non-Circulating%20Hydroponic%20Methods%20for%20Growing%20Edible%20Ginger.pdf

      @@growkratky5558 I think the day night cycle might be the cause of this. You can have very high humidity for a good portion of the day, which gets the roots going, then they die back when humidity drops in the heat of the day. As soon as the roots are submerged they can grow aggressively.

    Hello, Dr. Kratky, Where you to find supplies of Nursery pots that do NOT have the predrilled holes? This seems to be an impossible find for me. Everyone I find has "hoses drilled for proper drainage". I don't want to sacrifice my 5 gallon buckets for this so , if you have the name of these type of pots , I can search and ask vendors if they have them. Thanks
    Also, I am considering trying to grow ginger like this but using hyrdroton clay pebbles. My first attempt used a bucket, with a pot at the bottom , and the clay pebbles filled in, but rather than having sub irrigation, I tried doing it like Passive Hydroponics where I filled it to the top with nutrient solution in contact with the seed pieces and they would grow downward as the water receeded. Unfortunately, I didn't plan for mulitple rain storms that ended up flooding my bucket system and drowning my plant. ( it had a large open top net cup designed for 5 gallon buckets) After watching this video, I realize how important it is to divert rainfall.

    Interesting, I'm curious about cost analysis of the 3rd pot vs cost of grow media and factoring in the split pots loss vs added value of packing the pots. I'm not familiar with the market value of Ginger, curious if adding that 4th seed provides a significant return on investment. There is something special about those air spaces. As always, thank you for sharing. Big blue thumbs up for you, kind sir.

      Growing medium is surprisingly expensive - $0.59/liter at one retail outlet in Hilo - even when buying a 3 cu ft bag. This calculates to $1.77 for 3 liters which is more expensive than a 3-liter blow molded pot and that cost decreases with each re-use. Split pots could be eliminated by selecting larger pots. Yes, adding a fourth ginger seed piece probably is not a good investment.

    Thank you so much for the video. I was wondering if this arrangement could be possible with traditional irrigation method at home. What I mean is can I achieve the same production if I water the pot with nutrient solution manually from the top?

  • @amitbuch
    @amitbuch 4 месяца назад

    Curious why the outermost pot needs to be any larger / taller than the 5 cm depth of solution that it carries. I would put pot in pot in a big tub and use that as outermost pot for multiple of pot in pots. The outermost post is a saving in this arrangement. This also makes it possible to have pot in pot technique to become pot in grow bag if a grow bag is used. The use of grow bag will be more tolerant to pot bursting.

    I’ve just recently found your video channel and just have to say thank you! so much information. May I ask, why is the sub-irrigation aspect so important, which you point out explicitly at the end. Why not irrigate with the solution from the top, using the pot in pot in pot method?

    • @growkratky5558
      @growkratky5558  Год назад

      This is possible, but it would require a specialized float valve that could release the solution in this manner.

    Thank you for the informative video and for sharing your research with us. I have two questions and would love to know your opinion (Apologies in advance if my questions sound stupid):
    -Can this method be used to grow strawberries instead of something like the Ebb and Flow which I presume is common for growing Strawberries?
    -Can the PPP method also be used to grow tomatoes instead of a method like the Dutch bucket?

    • @growkratky5558

      It could work for corn and tomatoes, but corn is a lower value crop and the cost of the pots and growing medium might not justify the returns from the corn crop. I will try to make a potato video by the end of the year or maybe next year.

    Dr. Kratky, has anybody tested the nutrient levels of these vegetables and root crops when they are grown hydroponically? The reason that I ask is because Ginger is a medicine for me, not just a spice. And would there be a difference in growth if you used rain water instead of well water?
    Also, has anybody tested seeds from plants grown for several years produced in this manner, say three generations of harvested seeds, and then tested them in soil to see if they had adapted to growing only in nutrient solution?

    • @growkratky5558
      @growkratky5558  3 года назад

      I haven't collected this type of nutrition data and can't quickly locate similar data from other researchers.
      We have grown ginger like this for a number of years and distributed ginger seed rhizomes to folks who grew in soil and the ginger grew normally.

      It's not a 100% guarantee because the ginger could harbor bacterial wilt, but if the ginger looks healthy and the rhizomes are hard, there is a pretty good chance you will be ok.
