I think Kit Harrington is great in GoT, but he is supposed to be surly in it. Jon Snow is even described like that in the books, so it works for that character. I really hope he has more range as I think he has the talent to have a long and prosperous career, if he can pull off different roles
I actually enjoyed this movie, but totally get the negativity towards it. I didn't think the CGI was as bad as Chris is making out here- it was decent enough for me. The story, although a Gladiator rip-off, was decent enough I thought. But the fighting scenes were definitely poorly edited, yes. I hate it when they think we need to see so many quick edits. I disagree about the acting though- these are all very good actors. If anything blame the script, not the actor.
I rather enjoyed Pompeii for what it was. I also like Gladiator and disaster movies and this one gave me both so in my opinion it wasn't all that bad. And the special effects weren't terrible either. Good review though.
Kevin Stein I'd have to agree with you on that part. While Pompeii does seem terrible from the review, what Michael Bay did with Pearl Harbor was much worse.
Well in my opinion at least Pearl Harbor had an awesome action sequence with the bombing of Pearl Harbor of course, but everything else in the film was crap, and I think this Pompeii film will have nothing redeeming to it at all in my opinion.
Kevin Stein Pearl Harbor just pisses me off because of how disrespectful it was to the actual event. I'm a World War 2 enthusiast so I guess I am kind of biased.
It pisses me off how disrespectful it was to the actual event because Michael Bay cares nothing about the any source material he uses for his films including historical events, because he is a jackass, but all I am saying is I thought the bombing sequence In the film was well done and a little of the jimmy Doolittle raid, but Michael Bay did not have any else right because all he cares about is making money
Saw it a couple times at home. I would give it a C. Maybe because I liked the story it was easy for me to ignore all those other bad elements. Maybe it is better off watching on television.
Paul W.S. Anderson actually directed a movie I loved from my childhood that lived in our VCR. That would be "Mortal Kombat". I'll also admit that AVP 1 did not give me eye sores when I saw it.
Robert Sanders Paul WS Anderson did not direct the sequel to AVP. Movies that I enjoyed that he directed are Event Horizon, Mortal Kombat, Soldier and Death Race.
Honestly Kit Harrington is a pretty emotionless actor. Maybe it's just the role of Jon Snow but I rarely ever enjoying his acting especially compared to a bunch of other people on GoTs cast.
Yea I was surprised as well. Maybe it’s because I found the filmmaking craft to be better than a lot of recent blockbusters (cough marvel). I’m not saying it’s a great film overall but ……hey it’s fun.
Inaccuracy ! Inaccuracy ! Inaccuracy ! OH MY GODS...people died that day and that's how their story was told...Did those people actually read about Pompei and the roman Empire history ?!
They unburied parts of the city and people were discovered charred into carbon and ash statues in the positions they died in. Would've been terrifying.
The part with the chariot you're talking about at about 2:20 was extra horrible if you think about how, before they went in, those streets where filled with rubble and dead bodies. Suddenly, as they're trying to get away, it's completely empty. Really? And compared with the actual history, and what we know of Roman culture, it was just terrible.
Kiefer was easily the worst part of this whole movie...and I like Kiefer! My favorite movie is The Lost Boys and he was excellent in that! This however..I mean what the fuck was that? His acting was atrocious and his accent was worse...
FWI I mean Kit Harrington's physical appearance not his acting he isnt bad in GOT but he's not great especially not compared to the insane cast (i mean they are amazing).
He’s just not a showy actor. I think he did a brilliant job playing Jon Snow especially in the later seasons. He’s also good in other stuff like 7 Days in Hell or The Death and Life of John F Donovan.
He is just a select taste, like Tommy lee jones (since he was mentioned.) Tommy is a select taste. He has roles he’s amazing in, but those types of roles are all he plays. The same goes with Kit, he just needs a role slot.
This film was great. I rated it 9/10 [TERRIFIC FILM] An unforgettable love story, which I carry in my heart since then like a dream from a past life. I truly love it! The only thing I was hoping for this title was the unrated version later on, but for our disgrace the BBFC censorship was made available in all releases worldwide. They were applied during the post production process ruining the possibility of a more savage version regarding blood, amputations... and all those horrible things that humans do to each other.
I actually liked Event Horizon too. That and the first Resident Evil movie, were the only movies that Paul Anderson directed were good. The rest like Resident Evil 5, 4, The Three Musketeers, Mortal Kombat, and Death Race, were really bad. I'm definitely not looking forward to Resident Evil 6 later this year.
I have always said practical effects mixed with elements of CGI works best. Dante's Peak for instance has practical effects that still look great, the pyroclastic flow scene is immensely impressive even now.
I didn't feel the movie was that bad, but on the other hand, I don't remember ANYTHING about the movie (then again... the same thing happened for a few action movies, like GI Joe)
It's funny that Paul Anderson is one of the most hated directors, he used to be one of my favorite. I'd go to any movie just because he's the director. Event Horizon, Soldier (my favorite, you should DEFINITELY check it out), Mortal Kombat 1, even the later movies like Resident Evil 1, Alien Vs Predator 1 and Death Race. Then he suddenly started sucking but being more popular. He had the same destiny with Michael Bay. (There was also a time when we said Michael Bay was a good director)
The only reason I wanted to check this out was for Emily Browning but it seems more like a redbox rental than something I would pay to see in a theater thanks for confirming that with the D- rating
Dear Chris Stuckmann I love your analysis videos. Especially the Drive and Prometheus ones. They are very well done. The reason I'm writing is because I have an important request I think it would be very cool if you did a Cowboy Bebop Series Analysis, touching on the major characters and the major episodes involving the series overall plot, as well as the fun ones of course. Also very important, I really want to hear your take on the whole "dream" theory about spike and the show. Again your videos are very well done and I think viewers would really like this, including me of course Thank you -Christian
Not to be a dick, but Bebop is not deep at all. It's actually pretty shallow. The characters are hardly developed even though it's a 26 ep long series. Vicious is probably one of the worst villains I've seen, with his 20 mins of screen time. And there's hardly a plot to it. If you were to take out the unessential scenes in the show. It wouldn't be any longer than 8 episodes. I love the series don't get me wrong, but it is extremely overrated.
The Third Child its nostalgic for me and many others out there I'm sure. Im sure loads of similar arguments can be made toward other animes. I happen to love the series for what it was, thats just me
Emily Browning clearly needs to stick to smaller indie flicks because her ventures into big budget Hollywood rarely fair well for her. Also Event Horizon is the only Paul W.S. Anderson movie that I genuinely like.
You forgot about the real protagonist in this movie in your intro... Adewale! Also, Kiefer Sutherland's modern haircut in this movie really stood out from the rest to me haha.
I remember after the trailer, which lasted a few minutes, I already felt like I had seen the whole movie, and my mom herself said she'd had enough after the trailer.
I liked Pompeii. I had low expectations but actually think it was a decent watch and will watch again at some point. Yes, there is a certain repetitiveness to some of the CGI but also some really powerful use of it for key moments. It did transport me to a different time and place. I also think the film knows its own limitations (which is rare) and therefore doesn't get bogged down in 'original' script or complex narratives. Adewale Akinnuoye is great too. As for the fight scenes I found them effective. It gave the scenes dynamism and was a fresh style. I thought the ending was nice. Would have been so easy to butcher it by it was actually quite touching
Hi Chris... Mortal Kombat was a not exactly Citizen Kane, but it was bags of fun - one of the better game adaptations I felt... at least in terms of leaving you feeling like a kid again. (PWS Anderson)
I think im the only one who loved this movie. I loved Kiefer Sutherland in the film he waa easily the best part. So cartoonishly evil. I liked how emotionless Kit was... it made his character of the gladiator more convincing. I loved the disaster element because it doesnt try and be smart just a fun movie to watch. Id give it a B+.
This movie was SO taxing on me, personally. Only because I've seen Kit Harington do SO AMAZINGLY well in front of a camera. He's probably one of the best dramatic actors to appear in a television series while still being able to accomplish the physicalities of the action sequences the narrative requires. Given the right script, under the most ideal conditions, he is really able to shine as a performer, even his recent Broadway show "True West" was surprisingly effective for me, and this particular movie should never be counted against him, personally, when assessing his, as yet, young career. (Besides, it's really not all THAT bad lol there are a few redeeming qualities here and there. Hidden throughout, of course.😇👍)
My Latin class wants our teacher to take us to go see this. It upsets me on multiple levels that they think it looks good. I know that I'd get out of school for a few hours, but I don't think it'll be worth it if I have to sit through this.
We're used to disaster movie of our age but that one set in classical time is wonderfull. This scene is so epic, the classic setup add both a beauty and a fragility but being the Romans it still have a grandeur for it time, which allow impressionists scenes. The latin chants in the final eruption song just fit perfect with the epicness of the scene and the Roman setup. Like a punition from the Gods because of the Romans sins...
Chris, stop reviewing movies for a week and go catch up on Game of Thrones! Are you kidding me? It's not just good, it's absurdly good. It's a must see, like right now.
I decided to watch Dante's Peak before I saw Pompeii. While Dante's Peak is not the greatest film ever made, it's a MASTERPIECE compared to Pompeii. At least Dante's Peak felt "fun" as soon as the volcano erupted and had its charm. Pompeii gave me nothing at all.., Also it's sad that a movie from 1997 has better and more convincing special effects than a film from 2014.
Do you get to watch movies early at previews? Thats what it sounded like at the end when you said that this movie comes out in about a week! Im so jealous!
I hate when directors use too many cuts like that. That's the biggest problem I had with Quantum of Solace. The quick cuts bothered me even more than the script. I don't think Kit Harrington is a great actor. He's pretty good on Game of Thrones, but it's because his role doesn't require a lot. It's pretty much "sulky teenager" so far. Another HBO show you should check out is True Detective with Matthew McConaughey. Last week's episode (episode 4) had a very impressive long cut. it ran for over 6 minutes, and more impressive than the runtime was just how complex the scene was. There were so many moving parts and it was all executed perfectly. My jaw was hanging open by the end.
Chris you need to watch Game of Thrones! It's second only to Breaking Bad imo. I will personally lend you my flixster account that has them on it! All 3 seasons
You should pronounce Pompeii as Welsh Poet (and most educated persons of his generation) Dylan Thomas did. We know how he did because we can listen to him reading his little prose poem "A Child's Christmas in Wales".
Me and my mom loved this movie Chris, it might lack origiginality, however the action sequences and the story that it told were decent. The fight towards the end made me get all up in excitement. I would give it a C+. Also why did you give it a higher grade than Legend of Hurculese.
Nobody said Kit was excellent on Thrones but he is underrated and not as bad as people make him out to be or did but he is nowhere near Peter Dinklage [Tyrion], Nicolaj Coster Waldau [Jaime], Alfie Allen [Theon], Maisie Williams [Arya] or Charles Dance [Tywin] etc.
I saw a video about "How to film an action scene" and they said a cut right at the moment the punch connected made it "more intense". So... I guess that's the way some Hollywood directors think.
I was hoping it would be like Titanic, that I would see a somewhat accurate reconstruction of a devastating historical event with a love story to fill up the time. Not even close. However, it was so bad that it was almost good. It was worth a few laughs.
You are completely right about the movie, gladiator meets dante's peak. anyway, it was entertaining BUT as you said, John Snow is a great actor in GoT and horrible in this movie. Serioulsy I cannot even believe that YOU didnt watch GoT yet. Kind of dissapoining. I give you a D-
Got it on bluray yesterday. What a great picture and outstanding sound through a home cinema system. Completely wasted on this movie. It was Pompeii meets 'Twilight' meets 'Eldorado' (one for the brits! Eldorado was a terrible soap opera in England about 20 years ago). On the plus side, I took the bluray and some old dvd's to 'Computer exchange' (CEX) and part exchanged for the 'Star Wars Saga' on Bluray. Every cloud!
If he making this review based entirely based on the previous. Nobody has seen the movie. If the movie had been available for viewing by any reviewer there would be more than one review. Shame on you for doing that.
I got a bit of a Titanic/Pearl Harbor vibe from this. You know the, we're going to make kind of a love story with the disaster being a backdrop kinda deal. Apparently, mixed with Gladiator. Yeah, I won't see this except out of morbid curiousity (luckily, I have a free movie ticket.)
All I heard was "I haven't watched Game of Thrones" yet. I'm in shock. I know you said you'll "get around to it", please for the love of movies, get around to it!
the poster for Volcano said "the coast is toast"? omg that is so terrible is amazing lol
Long live the 90's
Lol
Why the hell do disaster movies need villains? In titanic, isn't the ice berg kind of the predetermined bad guy?
Ethan Lawrence In Titanic, isn't the rich guy that hated Jack the "villian"?
Ethan Lawrence There's people who you *want* to die more than others.
sadly no, its the forgettable guy i forgot his name of that i do remember likes slapping his future wife.
I've been saying that since 1997! You don't need a guy firing a gun at the main characters when the ship is sinking!
@@ghost_vivs You mean Cal, played by Billy Zane
I think Kit Harrington is great in GoT, but he is supposed to be surly in it. Jon Snow is even described like that in the books, so it works for that character. I really hope he has more range as I think he has the talent to have a long and prosperous career, if he can pull off different roles
Troy Achilles vs. Hector
Is one of the best examples that a hand to hand fight scence should be made.
Sometimes in the thumbnail with Chris' face in them I usually can't tell if he hates it or loves it. lol
Yup, no doubt.
Maybe it's my face blindness....
Same with Jeremy Jahns :3
MrXenobro okay simp
Ha! I noticed that too....
I thought Kiefer Sutherland as the Roman officer was hilariously miscast in this shitfest.
MrOnomatopoiea Yeah the accent was really bad.
MrOnomatopoiea i dont think any actor could have pulled off that terrible dialougue
Did he only have 24 hours before the volcano explodes?
One thing I have to say about his character is he was probably one of the most unlikeable assholes I've seen.
MrOmegaBeams: I kept wanting him to start speaking in that awful Bane voice...
Watched this movie in Latin class and was just dying of laughter because the CGI was so bad.
I actually thought it was some kind of dramatised made for TV documentary
Are you dead now ?
Why Latin class? If it was someone historical authentic I could understand history class. Not Latin.
@@kylemendoza8860 Vecause one of the main sources of the eruption written by Pliny the younger is usually translated in Latin class.
Um the cgi was really good. The movie wasnt good but the cgi was amazing.

I enjoyed it too.

Hahaha loved the Comparison to Gladiator
I rather enjoyed Pompeii for what it was. I also like Gladiator and disaster movies and this one gave me both so in my opinion it wasn't all that bad. And the special effects weren't terrible either. Good review though.
This literally has to be Paul WS Anderson's answer to what Michael Bay did with Pearl Harbor!
Yes it is but done much worse
Kevin Stein I'd have to agree with you on that part. While Pompeii does seem terrible from the review, what Michael Bay did with Pearl Harbor was much worse.

Mortal Kombat isn't a great film, but very enjoyable. AVP was meh. AVP 2 was shit.

He always looks laconic and miserable. It's like he's clinically depressed.
This is a huge guilty pleasure for me. Watching it now for the 2nd time in 6 years. Still enjoyable in my opinion.

Kit Harrington is a pretty bland actor. To be honest I think Jamie's right hand has more personality.
He's really good on Game of Thrones.
sonicjrjr14 he only seems good cause jon snow requires nothing. both jon and kit are emotionless
@@once861 I agree. It's the story around Jon that made him interesting not the actor's mediocre acting.

Pompeii is a good movie. Gladiator meets Titanic. It's the best volcanic disaster flick since Dante's Peak. I've got Dante's Peak and Pompeii on DVD.
Not to be confused with Wes Anderson, who is awesome.
Or Paul Tomas Anderson, who is also awesome.

Chris you need to watch Game of Thrones! It's second only to Breaking Bad imo. I will personally lend you my flixster account that has them on it! All 3 seasons
Where can I get that shirt?
"Kiefer Sutherland as the villain"
That made me think he was the Volcano.
The acting sucked? Even Emily Browning? Say it isn't so, Chris; I like her work
Her head is way too big compared to her body size. I noticed it in the movie Legend and now I can't unsee it...
Are you kidding me the cgi was really good. But the green screen wasnt good
Pompei = Titanic + Gladiator - Talent
this movie has music of steven wilson right?
You should pronounce Pompeii as Welsh Poet (and most educated persons of his generation) Dylan Thomas did.
We know how he did because we can listen to him reading his little prose poem "A Child's Christmas in Wales".
This pretty much sums up my thoughts in a nut shell. Im considering doing a review myself, hopefully when I have the time
I Agree!!! Have you ever seen The Devil at 4 O'clock from 1961? Best Volcano movie ever. Spencer Tracy and Frank Sinatra Rock!!!
Me and my mom loved this movie Chris, it might lack origiginality, however the action sequences and the story that it told were decent. The fight towards the end made me get all up in excitement. I would give it a C+. Also why did you give it a higher grade than Legend of Hurculese.
You know, I liked this movie and I think it had such a good climax
Where'd the Bond collection go?
I Agree with everything you said minus the Event Horizon bit . . that was a good movie
You should review True Detective. Best Series on TV right now
I seriously thought Pompeii was some HBO series at best when I saw the trailer for it..
That is exactly how Kit is on GOT, very bland. I guess that makes him seem wise or something. He's cute, so I guess there's that.
Hilarious review I will still see it because I need a good laugh when I think about Volcano had some really bad SFX and acting too
Nobody said Kit was excellent on Thrones but he is underrated and not as bad as people make him out to be or did but he is nowhere near Peter Dinklage [Tyrion], Nicolaj Coster Waldau [Jaime], Alfie Allen [Theon], Maisie Williams [Arya] or Charles Dance [Tywin] etc.
The only thing I could think when I saw the ads for this movie was: "SPOILERS!" And aside from that, I couldn't muster up a single fuck to give.
How cool is that Chris plans on watching Game Of Thrones.
This movie also borrowed music from Spartacus Blood and Sand.
You still haven't watched Game of Thrones :(
Shame! Shame! Shame! *ding ding*
He has now!!
If you want to see a good Paul WS Anderson film, watch Shopping with Jude Law. Excellent flick.
Damn I really wanted this to be at least a C to C+. Well Paul WS Anderson is a DTV director not a big budget director
I enjoyed this movie. My friend and I never took it seriously which made almost every scene hilarious. Thanks for the review Chris :)
Use your free movie ticket on something better.
Okay.
Mortal Kombat is the only film of his that I like. Laugh all you want, but it's still the best movie based on a video game.
All I heard was "I haven't watched Game of Thrones" yet. I'm in shock. I know you said you'll "get around to it", please for the love of movies, get around to it!
Why don't you have E in your rating.
Big Boss, Trinity, and Jon Snow are trying to survive a volcano. This sounds like a weird fanfic
