The better they know the engineering, the better they can work together to fix it. Seb definitely spent more time in that regard, but they both spent a lot of time with the engineers getting the car how they think it should be

It could have been a pig of a chassis and their strategy crew could have been 8 year old kids and they still would have won the championships they did. Most of the races they drove with the power dialled down and only increased the pace in small increments as other engine manufacturers made step by step small gains.

Whilst i do believe in listening to Lewis as he is a big feedback source, he is limited to feedback. As someone who has studied similar stuff in uni and constantly told by professors what is wrong in terms of feedback i.e. the balance is too forward, the hard part is trying to fix it. It's very easy to identify problems, fixing them without making things worse is the hard part. If the suggestions don't work in the simulations, there's no reason to implement. There's no coincidence that when they discovered why the real world car and models/simulations didn't match they immediately started to improve

I think I am a bit biased towards engineers though since during my degree knowing what was wrong was the easy part, how to fix it technically was the hard part. The design process is much more iterative like James Allison said, you don't just up and completely change the car from one source feedback, you take mini steps to improve in the direction of what your data from models, simulation and driver dictates

Fluid dynamics is an insanely difficult and math heavy discipline. No matter how much experience you have as a driver it's simply not possible to improve the aerodynamics of a vehicle by visual inspection. Even something as simple to explain verbally as ground effect is, in reality, a nightmare of mathematical models and equations. Not saying that Lewis was trying to do this, but I see other comments suggesting he was.
