With the NFL Draft this week, the Buffalo Plus team gives their thoughts on what they WANT Brandon Beane and the Bills to do in the first and what they THINK Buffalo will do.
Should the Bills trade UP in the first round to get a wide receiver or wait until day 2 in the draft to add another pass catcher to one of the worst WR rooms in the NFL? Dan explains why 'hoping' to find value in a 2nd round wide receiver has historically been a losing bet.

I really hope that we can get a solid first round WR, either one that slipped through the cracks or that we get by moving up a few spots, not enough to sacrifice a huge amount of draft capital, but just enough to get a solid guy. If we can come away with two nice receivers and a running back from this draft, we could very well be the best inside/slot team in the NFL.
Kansas City won the Super Bowl last year with a weak offense and number one defense. We don't need to have the best offense to win, but if our offense can really beat people up and dominate with nice short under 10 yard plays, we can still have enough power to score. We have so much versatility that I think we could still at least be competitive, and polish the roster in 2025.

I don’t know, I really love the 1st-2nd round ish guys like Legette, AD, but even Pearsall, McConkey (my favorite, though probably not a scheme fit with how many slots guys we have, idk), and Keon Coleman.
Coleman is now massively underrated after his 40, but his gauntlet was incredibly impressive - arrow-straight line and fastest time = incredibly confident hands.
The key here is throwing multiple arrows at the board. It does NOT make sense to put your eggs in one basket if the guy is a flop or at least NOT a superstar. Do we really want to gamble on that???? Better to double dip, maybe pick up a guy in the late rounds or UDFA for depth, train up Shorter(?), invest in Shakir and Samuel. Also Mack Hollins is an underrated signing. Guy is a dawg who’s only had mediocre QB play, I’m excited to see him on the field

Kalil Shakir was a hidden gem LAST season. We will have to see if he can get any YAC & create separation before making an honest assessment. I don't hold out much hope for the season with all of the talent that was let go. I understand the "going younger" mindset but I wouldn't have super high expectations.

Unless there’s a guy sitting there at 28 that you’re absolutely in love with (maybe a DeJean, Chop Robinson, or a Byron Murphy), then just trade back to get your 3rd round pick back and then take a receiver at pick 35-40. There’s so much receiver talent and it’s a total crap shoot anyway. But if you do get your Chop Robinson at pick 28, then you gotta trade up in the 2nd round. I don’t think 60 is quite good enough to still have access to all that receiver talent because a lot of teams in front of you have the same mindset. So probably gonna have to lose a 4th and maybe a 5th for that

It's either go all the way up or trade back. If we stay at 28 any receivers left will be overvalued... to wait until 60, then they'll be gone. Find a partner in the 32-36 range and pick up another 2nd and a 3rd. Or get to 5-6-7 and grab whoever is there. Worry about next year's picks later.

The difference in this WR class from others you all mentioned is the quality of its depth. In any other years, some of these guys would be drafted higher.
Also, being at #28 makes it incredibly difficult to trade up high enough to get the “big fish.” What team in the top 10 wants to trade down to #28?
You can argue that the Bills messed up by not drafting Jefferson. He and Josh would be growing together and would just now be getting paid.
I think they have to go the veteran trade route now bc they chose not to draft Jefferson and paid Diggs 3x instead.
Troy Franklin is a far more polished route runner than BTJ. He’s just not a strong contested catch guy. So, if you’re looking for an “Alpha WR1” Franklin is him from a route running, height, and speed perspective. BTJ is more of the project.
Lastly, there are a lot of recent exceptions: Tank Dell, Zay Flowers, Hollywood Brown, DeVonta Smith. Look at the film of the player.

Kelce had more reception, targets and yards than Hill in the 4 years they played together with Mahomes. What player does the Bills have that even remotely comparable to that??

If you are just rating things on playoff catches, then they should sign Michael Gallup. he has as many playoff TD's as Diggs did in Buffalo. Pretty silly right? Anyway, if they can't get who they want they should move back. Washington is a perfect trade back partner. 28 & 144 for 40 and 78. This would give them 40, 60 and 78. They will have a ton of talent available to them and they have not touched next years picks. Plus they have a shot at moving up into the back end of the 3rd still with all those late picks.

The Bills still have two really good receiver threats at TE (Dawson had a hand injury last year) and a threat to run / receive in James Cooke. Josh mentioned his conversation with Joe Brady that if he’s trying really hard to feed his main guy (Stephon), he’s doing a disservice to the offense. He needs his eyes to be where the play calls for them to be, not trying to feed a particular WR. It’s comparable to how the league had their feature back stage but now teams do very well with RB by committee. Maybe we don’t want to try to force the ball to one top WR. The Bills have said in the past that they look at trends and try to get out in front of those trends. This seems like one of those times.
I believe they can get Jacob Cowing and Ainias Smith in the 4th or later. Bud Means in the 5th or later. Jacob is that guy that’s always open and he’s a threat after he catches it. He should be considered one of the better WRs in the draft. I can see where the Bills might have an amazing WR room even if they wait until day three. I’m sure I’ll get some bad remarks for saying that but research those guys before you call me an idiot.

To say that our WR room is really bad seems wrong to me. Curtis Samuel is a big improvement over Gabe. Mack Hollins seems like an improvement over Sherfield. Khalil is a very good slot receiver. They have developmental guys, including former 2nd rounder Andy Isabella and a size speed guy in Justin Shorter both going into year two with the team. They’re going to find a good WR in the draft or more than one. They’re probably only going to roster 6 guys.
So, if they’re better at every spot but WR1, is it really a bad WR room? Stephon had 5 really good games last year but was otherwise not getting it done. I’ll post the comparison stats. If they get one guy in a talented draft class, they’ve got a WR room that’s potentially the best they’ve had since Cole and Steph were tops in 2021.

Everyone is too high on AD for Buffalo.. there are red flags all over that dude. Not a culture fit and I cant imagine Beane taking that big of a risk in the first round. Too bad Legette, baby AJ Brown, who can take a slant 75 yards to the house doesnt have enough "sizzle" lol 🙄

Thank you for your podcast. Dan after Ditka traded all his draft picks to the Washington 2 years later Ditka was fired and the Saints sank into the toilet. The Bills defensive line and offensive line are need of players. The defensive line the Bills are putting on the field is basically the same defensive line the chiefs blowed out in the playoffs last year. The Bill have to get tougher on both sides of the ball. The Bills defensive line is soft to me. One player never makes a team. The Bills safety position is so so. The receiver room is better shape the safety room and defensive line.

If you pick a receiver at #28, then use one of next year's second round picks to move up in the second and double dip. You could get a Franklin and Worthy, for example. If you make a big move, you have a one player draft, with picks on day 2.

Mitchell is not a great hands catcher and has had problems separating. He’s a type 1 diabetic too not sure how much that sways anything but I could see him falling to 28.
I actually think Dan is right about cooper and I see bills be aggressive in round two to land Leggett, Lad or Franklin. And I honestly would be ok with it. They love corners so you know this is very possible.

The mental gymnastics of trying to justify moving into the top 15 done in this podcast was impressive to listen to. And then the crew goes on to make the point that in 2020 a very heavy wide receiver draft like the current one we are in produced a lot of productive wide receivers, the bills have too many needs to put that much capital into hoping a wide receiver will hit that early. Don’t even need to bring up Sammy Watkins. Hang at 28 and be willing to go up to 20, besides that there’s no proof that the back half of the wide receivers Won’t be number ones it’s admittedly a crap shoot. I would rather get a Leggette and maybe even a McConkey in the first two pics than get one of the “top four” receivers.

i’m all in for the Bills taking Jackson Powers-Johnson (JPJ) the center from Oregon, in the 1st round.
    consider:
Josh became the tush push king after Brady took over. he had good success in short down yardage but it was clear that the Bills needed more “push” than what Mitch Morse and Ryan Bates at center could bring… and THAT’s why they were both released.
getting JPJ changes all that. let’s not forget that the tush push, when done well, is SO effective that there was talk about banning it among fans and game announcers. the Eagles had a 41/44 (93%) 1st down/goal success rate. its a MASSIVE advantage for the offense. i believe the Bills are all in to get JPJ to combine with Josh for the remainder of Josh’s best running years.
also, Beane announcing to the world that McGovern was the new center just when Morse was released was strange… that’s team intel… why give that away so quickly? and Josh talking TOO much (lol) about the new center in his last presser… this is all smoke.
if you could make one pick to practically guarantee all 3rd & 2 or goal line conversions… that’s some serious drive extending/finishing power. we all noticed it when Brady took over… the tush push is overpowered and locking that in for the next 5-7 years while Josh’s legs are still fresh makes a TON of sense.
it’s almost GM malpractice not to get Josh a true blue chip center… and i’m certain Brady wants that tush push maxed out for next season. with our beefed up Oline and elite TEs… the Bills will be VERY hard to stop anywhere on the field.
Beane probably needs to trade up into the mid-teens to make sure to get JPJ.
    i’d appreciate your thoughts! :)

Player by the name Frazier highly rated. To me the Bills need offensive and defensive line players as well as wide receivers. I like Shakir and Samuels Josh will take care of the receivers if they get open and catch the ball. Josh made John Brown a 1000 yard receiver. Interesting Tandem Legette and Javon Baker are interesting

Love your idea except the trade up part. I’d love to see them trade down for a change and get a 2nd & 3rd for their 28th pick. Even Brandon is saying that the player at 28 won’t have a round one grade. There’s typically 20 - 25 guys in a draft with a 1st round grade. JPJ may be one of them but these guys can develop too and we have a top OL coach. Just believe they should see who’s there at 28. If nobody is standing clearly above the others, trade back and get that 3rd we should have had. Really good centers are usually drafted after the 1st.

Get Rice in the later rounds
Also the reason Shakir dosent have a lot of stats isn’t cause he isn’t good or was slow to catch on. It’s cause McDeromett never trusts his rookies n holds them back. Theres a good chance Shakir would’ve become a starter earlier cause he probably would have had more playing time.
