- What would you do for the perfect cup of tea? Editor Sirish Chandran takes the rugged Toyota Hilux onto the steep and treacherous Kolukkumalai trail to visit the highest tea estate in the world. These trails are so narrow and tricky that only local taxi drivers with 4x4 SUVs are allowed to ferry on them. We had to take special permits to go up for this one. The Hilux is a perfect vehicle to take on this trail. It has a ladder frame chassis mated to one of the finest diesel engines that can chug along, in 4 low if the going gets tough. All while keeping its occupants comfortable and safe. That's the charm of the Hilux. It's robust, dependable, and will last you a lifetime -- not something that can be said about many cars. These pickups are amazingly useful utility machines but unfortunately in many cases they are becoming a ‘lifestyle accessory’
That's true, however they are marketed as lifestyle vehicles in India.
However, Isuzu does have a range of proper utilitarian pick-ups.

With AWD, shouldn't be a problem. However, the bigger problem might be acquiring permits.
We planters have been using Gypsys since it's inception to take our daily estate rounds in Darjeeling, Dooars and Assam. Before that it was the defenders. Although few of us have the Thars now (because who doesn't prefer ACs on a humid day), its not the best because it is wider and heavier. Estate roads are narrow and full of shush. So Jimnys are again going to rule the estates.

It’s a very tough route believe me when i went I 4x4 Mahindra old jeep I understand how difficult the terrain is … so if hilux can conquer it’s big achievement….by the way u didn’t show that top of kolukkumala whether u conquered it?

I wish indians realize the advantages of luxury pickup trucks, rather than complaining how pricy they are, I mean u go to thailand or any other se asian countries, ull find that literally every owns a hilux or any pickup for that matter, and they have some really cool looking pickup trucks as well, mitsu triton being one, If you own a business that requires lot of logistics, you can literally save so much on renting goods autos for moving ur goods if u own a pickup truck
Even we hope the pick-ups get the love they deserve!
