Gad Elmaleh is being accused of stealing other comedians jokes at the moment in France, and it's a huge thing : an anonymous guy, called Copy Comic, posted a couple of videos, that literaly killed Gad Elmaleh's reputation in a matter of just a few weeks here in France, but also in Quebec and in all the French speaking world of humour. He's even been banned in Montreal's biggest venue for comedians. He went from King to fool, in just a few weeks.
I have studied the matter into details, and I would say that part of Copy Comic's work is true : Gad Elmaleh might have gotten "strongly inspired" by other comedians work, to say the least. But NOT ALL of Copy Comic's editing is an actual evidence of that. Here's we all have to use our critical mind in order to decide which is stealing, and which is coïncidence.
Because yes, coïncidence is a big part of a creator's work.
Imagine a world where any stand up comedian would have to check ALL OF THEIR JOKES into a database of ALL EXISTING JOKES in the HISTORY OF HUMOUR since the invention of writing : you'd only be allowed to tell jokes that YOU and YOU ONLY have told in the worldwide history of 6000 years of humour on Planet Earth.
Imagine a world where any writer would have to check ALL OF HIS EXPRESSIONS and POINTS OF VIEW in a database of ALL EXISTING EXPRESSIONS AND POINTS OF VIEW in the HISTORY OF LITERATURE since the invention of writing ?
In Copy Comic's editing, there's a suggestion that Elmaleh stole Georges Carlin's joke about you, looking at your watch, whilst thinking of something else, and then you realize, you still don't know what time it is. So you look again. This joke is UNIVERSAL, and just because Carlin did it decades ago, does it make this joke, Carlin's property ? Of course not. A French comedian, an Iranian comedian, a Chinese comedian, can all do that joke, because they all have experiences this little moment of daily life absurdity. In this precise case, there is obviously no stealing.
Same with the joke of a man, blowing his nose, and then checking the inside of his tissue : this is a common situation, and when you and I witness it, we probably both feel like : "what the f*** is this guy looking at ??? What's he gonna learn from that ? What's he expecting to discover in there ?!?" Gad made that joke coz he witnessed it. He didn't watch ALL of STAND UP COMEDY HISTORY before writing this joke down. He lived it, he tells it. And yes, chances are high, that this joke has already been told sometime someplace else. That should'nt prevent him from doing it.
Maybe, George Carlin is a thief too ? Maybe he stole his lock joke from the Ancient Roman Empire, 2000 years ago ? Why not ? Back then, Romans had solar clocks on the walls, and we can easily imagine a Roman walking the street, checking the solar clock, being distracted, and then realizing he still doesn't know the time, so there he checks again, and laughs at himself. Imagine a Historian comes with the discovery of a book dated 2000 years ago, where a Roman Comedian wrote some of his jokes, and there you go : the clock joke is mentionned. Is Georges Carlin a thief ?
Here are a couple of jokes from the ancient Greek and Roman times, for real :
"Two guys meet on the street : hey, I've been told you were dead !"
- well, you can see i'm not !
- Sure ; but the guy who told me that, is way more reliable than you are ! "
"A man goes to see his friend ; once in front of his house, he calls him. No answer. Neighboor goes : "if you want him to hear you, then shout his name louder !" The man shouts : "HIS NAME LOUDER !"
Owkay, these jokes are more than 2000 years old : now, will each stand up comedian have to check this kinda database before writing his own show ?
I'm an amateur writer myself : I write whatever comes through my mind. I can not check if any of my twists of phrases, personnal expressions, original associations of words and points of views, have NEVER been written befaire by ANY writer in 6000 years of literature worldwide.
Here we tackle the matter of intellectual property. A word, an expression, a situation, a point of view, can not belong to anyone.
Considering that, we still want to find out of a creator, has cheated the game, acted unethical, and literallt cut and pasted stuff from others, in order to make easy and dirty money. But we need be very careful in our investigations.
May wel all use our critical mind in oder to make our own opinions, and enjoy the pleasure of this very stimulating exercice !

HUMAN EXPERIENCE IS THE ONLY COMMONTHING BETWEEN HUMANS so pleae understand that writers ( of books, articles, jokes, movies...) will either think of the same experienced thing orsimply get inspired by seeing something, in both cases it is an inspiration ( it will be called stealing if the author claimed it after knowing that he wasn't the first to say it) which is not the case!
I am not french nor Canadian, not even Morrocan . I don't have to be one of these nationalities to defend Gad, I am simply defending Gad as an artist.

Something's not adding up with the new show setup and (maybe) the new Conan. It really isn't like it used to be before
I feel the same but apparently we are in minority... Conan was way more free both physically and verbally behind the desk. Now it's like a dark version of Ellen.

The network (TNT) was wanting change the format to save money. Cut the time to 30 minutes, got rid of the band and desk. I’m not sure I like it either.

I'm French and I've never heard this man called the Seinfeld of France. And we do know Mr. Seinfeld as a trailblazer in his own style of comedy. To be fair to Mr Seinfield their names do not belong in the same sentence as the same cannot be said of Mr. Elmaleh, who though being a talented multilingual comedian (as in actor) is also known for stealing jokes from other talented comedians. What he is known for is exactly that: Plagiarism.
