Yep that’s pretty accurate to everyone’s first attempt, just sheer panic and death in 10 seconds
I got past the first move on my first try, then couldn’t replicate it for a while
I only played bad time simulator, but I never died in the first attack (I did beat him)
I still sort of remember my first time fighting sans, I was following a walkthrough to not mess up the genocide route/had been on the internet so I'm not sure how much I actually knew going into it, but I don't think I knew just how big of a fight it would be. I thought I was ready... until that first attack absolutely destroyed me, pretty sure my reaction was even greater than pointcrow's (just less vocalized) and I was freaking out over it for a few minutes after lol, amazing beginning to a fight
I had already watched several genoicde run playthroughs before getting to play it myself, so I remembered the first attack pretty well and never died to it. Doesn't mean the rest of the fight was any easier though.
@@Dialgapro same man, i complete multiple times bad time simulator, there's also a hard version that i play sometimes beat it one time but now i can't beat it again
This one clip alone gave me crazy throwbacks to what it felt like to binge watch people's reactions to Undertale back in 2015 to 2016

It's actually genius to do this in a video game setting, because it's more fair to have something this crazy difficult that you have to memorize right at the beginning of the fight. The end of the fight is way harder in context of having to beat the whole goddamn bossfight just to get a single attempt in.

I think the first attack is very well designed. For starters, it catches the player off guard because every fight in undertale up until this point besides maybe flowey and omega flowey you're able to attack first after your enemies finish their pre-fight dialogue if they have any so you expect it to cut straight to your battle menu and as a result your hands are nowhere near the buttons you'd need to use to avoid an attack, relaxed by the false sense of security and caught up in sans' dialogue. This creates the perfect opportunity to catch the player off guard and by the time they realise what's going on, they'll either in such a state of shock that they won't even attempt to dodge, feeling defeated by the overwhelming onslaught, or they will try to survive and dodge the attack. Not having the foresight of knowing his attack patterns on the first attempt going into the fight, the player will move frantically in what seems to be a random manner but I've noticed almost every player seems to try to dodge the previous attack in a delayed manner since they have already been hit and will just run straight into the next attack, almost guaranteeing their death or at least leaving them on very very low hp. Accompanied by the fact that if they even make it to the first turn they'll miss their attack if they try to and will die very early on in the fight, the player will likely have a defeatist attitude going into the following attempts but will be pressed on by how intriguing the battle is and what may come after. In the next 5 to 10 resets or so, sans seems to use his first attack at different time intervals. What I mean is he will start attacking halfway through his dialogue to catch you off guard yet again when you expect him tk attack after he says "should be burning in hell". The ambiguity of everything about the fight, throwing a lot of your past knowledge and things you took for granted out of the window, makes this fight really well designed imo. Also the fact that you feel like you're making little progress since you never deal any damage until the end of the fight, accompanied by the fact sans gets additional turns to attack you if you try spare, act or use an item as well as the fact he can attack you through your menu after the first half of the fight makes everything feel pointless which is exactly what he's trying to make you feel. He wants you to think the battle is impossible and to just give up. I think the scene where he auto-kills you if you spare him really adds to this sense of hopelessness. Of course if you're like me and already saw merg beat him on RUclips without getting hit once before attempting the fight yourself, none of this matters at all lmao. Still, Toby Fox is undoubtedly an incredibly talented game designer
Yeah, it’s super interesting how literally EVERYONE seems to have delayed reactions like you said, and I think you finally helped me realize why. Especially since that state of shock as well as how chaotic and fast the attacks are, their brain just can’t catch up
I have a theory about why Sans attacks first and the song that's clearly Sans's in the soundtrack isn't the one that plays during the fight - if you've reached the Sans battle, you're past the point of redemption. You can no longer spare ANYONE, your only path forward is Genocide. You are, simply put, no longer the main character. You are the final boss. The protagonist always attacks first, and the enemy boss's music always plays. Megalovania - obviously a play on Megalomania, a feeling of ultimate power, like you already rule the world and these peons just haven't realized it yet - isn't Sans's theme, it's Chara's. It's yours. Sans is the hero fighting the evil final boss, attacking first and notably -dodging attacks- which is something the player has probably done hundreds of times at this point and no "bad guy" has managed. There are some other clues and hints, like the instant death when you try to Spare - any enemy that's turned colors to indicate you can Spare them can be insta-killed by attacking them, so it makes sense that when you give up the 'hero' can now insta-kill you, etc. Hope you like my theory ^_^

I remember fighting sans for the first time and losing after a couple of attacks. After that, I kept grinding the fight, trying to get better and better, and then, when I finally defeated sans, I reloaded my save file, and I kept fighting sans over and over and over. I dont remember if it was for fun or if sans pissed me off enough to the point where I decided to throw him into an eternal hell of death. I already was spoiled to the genocide route so there was no real need for me to get the genocide ending. I just did it. I'm pretty sure I still have the save file

I think what gets people is that sans attacks first. He's the only enemy in all of undertale who starts the fight.
