Excellent video! Perfect timing to provide information on a seasonal mushroom that is the subject of much debate (especially here in the US). I think you hit the nail on the head and appreciate you putting this out there. Ethnomycology and history of use are huge pieces of the puzzle -- I love that we live in a time where we can share information and knowledge to build towards deeper understandings. Keep up the good work!

Good video, and it looked like good soup. I just want to add, that I would be careful with the advice of dried mushrooms being safe or safer. I think when mushrooms are dried and then rehydrated they should be definitely treated as if they were fresh. I think the case of the Missoula attorney who died after eating morels while camping last spring in Utah, died because of an intolerance mixed with the fact that he put a bunch of dried morels into instant Uncle Ben's rather than actually cooking them for 10 minutes, unfortunately he and his partner suffered severe reactions, he didn't survive. I've been asked several times recently If dried morels are no longer toxic. I wouldn't count on that!
    Mush love

Verpa bohemica (or morel cap as we call it) is very very widespread in Russia. It's much more common then true morels and we do have no doubt about eating it. The only thing you need to do if you have it fresh is to preboil it for about 10 min and rinse it well before main cooking. Also was surprised hearing about vepra and alcohol incompatibility. To be honest I haven't tried to combine it myself but i'm sure many do practice it quite successfully😁

Hey thanks for commenting. Yes, alcohol intolerance with mushrooms is similar to personal allergies. Some can, some can’t.

@@foragerchef4141 I know for sure about only one edible mushroom you should not combine with alcohol no matter if you have any kind of personal allergies or not. It's Coprinus. But nobody eats it anyway 😀

False morels, Gyromitra esculenta, *WHILE TOXIC AND MAYBE FATAL* are considered a delicacy in Finland. The Finnish FDA recommends (and it it traditional) to first boil twice for five minutes, discarding the water, in a well ventilated space. Dried mushrooms must also be similarly treated. Love the content. May I suggest you do a video on rowan buds next spring? They are delicious, I make syrup and liqueur.

I live in Bozeman and had visited Dave’s Sushi once about 6 months before the poisonings, the food wasn’t great but it was affordable. Wasn’t good enough to go back.
They are still open to this day and have a big sign up on Main Street citing old positive acclimations such as “once rated best sushi restaurant in town”.

Verpas are very rare in most places of Europe so they aren't common at all in restaurants at all. They are also a protected species in some places so consider yourself lucky if you can get your hands on them

Verpa conica is protected I know. I just bought 1/2 lb of dried V. bohemica from a seller in the U.K. Though. The point I’m trying to make is that change is slow and some places still have a long ways to go in casting off some of their collective anti-mushroom sentiment.

Any chance to get (buy) a signed copy of The Forager Chef’s Book of Flora, or do I need to buy it and find you in the wild?

I just started eating Verpas this year after years of passing on them due to being taught they were poison. Turns out I was really missing out!

I was wondering whether the lolerance issue is the same with indigenious / native Americans. Also do you know any trick how to make sure all the maggots are out of morels before using them (besides drying) - best would be how/when to find them without any? Love Btw in Europe some say how to make sure that morels and the like don't bother you, is always use only such, that have undergone drying process. And I was thinking one day, whether it may be the maggots that are causing the issues (when not having these mushrooms dryed or cooked thoroughly) and not the morels themselves. Interestingly I am in a mature year and new to mushrooms in generals, but I simply followed sos principle, when you get good quality simply eat the fresh ones and it will be fine - and I didnt know that you were supposed to eat less than a bunch. :) and Im not from a typical mushroom picking country, although my mother told me that the grandmother had knowledge about mushrooms and used to pick some, but my mother didnt learn it. Best wishes

I feel like a lot of the stories about poisoning tend to come from a very uninformed point of view so I was curious about your take on the stories you referenced when I heard about them recently, particularly the mycologist who died on the camping trip, since he seemed like he knew what he was doing with them. As with home canning, there seems to be some pretty polar extremes in how people think about risk in these kinds of situations.

Hey, I came just across your channel. I'm wondering if you know if theres any benifits to eating common morels or if they are harmful to pets? Found some growing in my garden and am unsure if i should discard them. Any help would be appreciated.

I would never serve morels to pets. You can eat them though!

5:10 a bit disingeneuos. First, looking at where or who eats a food says nothing about toxicity. Some foods are eaten because they are toxic. You might even argue that toxicity is a sought after trait in some foods. It is no coincidence that a synonym for drunk is intoxicated. The better factor for judging possible toxicity is actual sickness. As far as specific mechanisms, one can look at similar fungi that cause similar illness under similar circumstances. Of particular concern is raw or undercooked mushrooms along with alcohol. Finally, only acute toxicity was mentioned, i.e. no mention of either accumulation of toxins in the body or potential carcinogenicity.
