  • Yamadori literally translates to “plant gathering in the mountains,” but it can also imply “plant picking in the wild.”
Yamadori trees are not found everywhere in the wild. Nature’s “battle scars” characterize the plant’s beauty, and the broken and twisted shape embodies individuality. It is a relatively small plant that grows deformed due to a combination of variables, including harsh weather conditions, poor soil properties, wind, abrasive sand, and grazing animals. In this video in collaboration with Twickenham bonsai club in UK I share some of my knowledge and experience in this path .

Many thanks Mauro for such helpful advice. What about non-deciduous (broadleaved) oaks such as holm oak or cork-oak, where do they store energy and when is the most appropriate collecting season?

    Grazie e complimenti!
    Grazie!

Hi master MAURO, thank you for the great video you shared. Thank you for your guidance. I had a Pyracantha whose pot was broken due to the storm and the roots were left in the air for about 6 hours. I completely removed the dried roots and planted relatively coarse pumice and covered it, Unfortunately the trunk of the tree got moldy and died, What kind of antifungal compound should I use for this problem?

Ti ringrazio in anticipo !

Is the 24 hour bath with fungicide suggested for pines and conifers too?

Hi Mauro, I am in Australia, Sydney and have collected 3 hinoki cypress so far. But all have died. Can you please give tips to keep hinoki cypress yamadori alive as well?

Hi Mauro, this is excellent information, thank you so much for uploading this. Question: after black-bagging several deciduous trees what is the watering schedule? Do I just leave them blackbagged until April??

Hi Mauro, just a quick question. When collectin oaks after using the black bag tecnique, how long before you do the first fertilizing cycle? At my local bonsai club the old people alway told to wait a whole growing season before fertilizin after a repot or after collecting yamadory.
