Don't you know there's a war on? WW2 Austin Tilly diorama (1/35 scale model)

  • Diorama build of the Austin Tilly driven by an ATS girl meeting a roadblock of sheep in the English countryside. The Tilly is the Tamiya kit I build a year or so ago, the ATS figure is a 3D print from Artejoal, and the sheep are from Miniart. Watch to see how I build the diorama from XPS insulation foam, stones, acrylic terrain paste, and PVA glue.

    That is simply awesome. Clearly the sheep want that tall grass on the far side of the road. They've broken out, clearly ignoring the sign! Your poor British figure is clearly distraught at the escaped sheep. Your story is clear. Excellent!
    Woodland Scenics, the same company that did your green blend also does a color called soil. That would go very well in the areas you had as mud. Adding the wash to your stacked stone walls was an excellent idea. Well done.
    She needs a Sheltie!

    That is a absolutely brilliant little diorama, it's a scene which would have been played out 1000's of time throughout the war years, many thanks for sharing this great piece of work, best regards from a Kiwi living in Australia

      @@ModelNerdEveryday life indeed, not just during a war either. Sheep are famous for not respecting rules of the road, or for distinguishing between roads and any other place. I feel that driver’s frustration.
      Loved the wall construction technique. The PVA glue does not show at all except at the bottom where it made a good substrate for the grass and weeds. I have to say though that after you got done painting and washing the stones, you might as well have left them as they were. From what I’ve seen, dry stone walls (in the USA at least) are almost always the same kind of stone top to bottom, end to end because that’s what’s available from the local geology.
      Anyway, the diorama (vignette?) has low key drama with larger implications which to my mind is exactly what this format does best. Nobody’s life is immediately at stake, nothing is blowing up or burning, nobody is even armed, but the contrast between the placidity of the sheep and the driver’s sense of urgency is almost palpable.
      To me, that makes it art.

    Man, I just love what you are doing! I’ve been following your channel for years now, and I really enjoy the variety you do and also the constant improvement of your skills!
    All the little details you’ve replicated in this scenery, the fragile flowers, the characteristic stone walls, the attention to detail while painting the sheep, even recreating the poop, it just turned out beautiful!!
    The Tilly is just an adorable truck, and using it to showcase the (often overlooked) effort the women are giving is a great idea!

      Thank you mate, I really appreciate your ongoing support and encouragement. The Home Front has really drawn me in recently - partly because we don't see many kits available that relate to them and partly because it is often an overlooked area of history in general, I think. Well, not overlooked, but certainly given less attention.

    A great little diorama, it really sets off the Tilly, which I remember you building, I liked it then and like it even more in this setting. the ATS figure is inspired, it would be obvious to use a male army driver but as you say on the home front they were mainly driven by female ATS drivers, cheers, Steve.

    I really like that little diorama. In fact I sometimes prefer the small single subject dioramas to the larger ones. Its probably taken as long, if not longer, to do the diorama than to build the Tilly so effectively you have doubled the build time and got a lot more value from the kit and also given the kit some context.

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  6 месяцев назад

      Thanks - and I completely agree. The first dioramas I built were very large and I think that is one reason they weren't very good. There's a lot of space to fill up and keep interesting, and the real world is very rarely empty or unvaried over large areas.

    That came out nice!
    Her uniform looks good, on the face perhaps a bit more of highlights on cheeks and nose? I just added a WAAF to my last build and struggled on the legs some until checking reference photos and realized she would have stockings. So a couple glazes of blue-purple over and not too horrible. I like how not glossy that VMS Matte finish is - no shiny person!

    • @ModelNerd
      @ModelNerd  6 месяцев назад

      Thanks. Yes, I did a few searches for "ATS girls legs" myself! :) My attempt is supposed to be the standard issue stockings but I should have gone with your glaze approach, I think.

    What an incredible creative dioroma. So realistic like a 3D photo. In fact it resembles a samiliar sheep encounter I had in Frieburg Germany, crossing a narrow bridge in a small Opel and learned its an international rule sheep have the right of way . I was mesmerized by the entire video. . Cheers till the next one.

    Great diorama, MN! Loved all the little details you included, not least of which the sheep droppings! Good move, choosing to make them out of Blu Tack - or, should I say, Poo Tack - instead of epoxy putty. I'm sure there's some added realism there, at least in their consistency. :)

    Awesome video, sir!!!! Something different!! Sheep were a constant problem in the American West during the late 1880s-1890s and many cattle ranches & sheep ranches literally went to war because of them. Reason being: the sheep would literally clean out a grazing area of grass, virtually leaving nothing behind, not even stubble, except a barren field whilst cattle would at least leave some stubble behind which would eventually grow back. Reading some books about the cattle/sheep wars of the era, it was discovered that the sheep's TEETH & OVER GRAZING was the main problems for their teeth are designed to PULL grass (roots and all) from the ground thus causing over grazing of an area while a cow's teeth (and most other grass-eating critters) are designed to CUT the grass just above the ground, thus allowing the grass to eventually grow back. Living in the Midwest of the USA, whenever passing by a cattle pasture and sheep pasture, you can really tell the difference between them and can understand WHY the cattle ranchers of the 1880s hated sheep so much. Anyway, enough of that dribble - fantastic diorama!!!!!!!!!!!!
