As an Arab American , we went crazy for this because we hadn’t had too many crossovers between the Arab world and the West when it came to music like this. I was 16 and ate it up big time!
Its a beautiful crossover, the sound of his Arabic voice is stunning, I have always loved this song. Its smooth and great to put on repeat and just close your eyes and listen to the sounds
Sting repeats the expression, "Ya Leil" in his lyrics, "ya leil, ya leil." "Ya Ein Ya Leil" is a popular phrase in Arabic culture that carries significant cultural value. The phrase is often used in conversations, music, movies, and television shows, making it an integral part of the Arab identity. The literal translation of "Ya Ein Ya Leil" is "Oh eye, oh night." The phrase is believed to have originated from the Arabic poetry tradition, where poets would use it to express emotions such as sadness or longing. "Ya Ein Ya Leil" is commonly used in different scenarios, such as expressing emotions of sadness, longing, or excitement. The usage of the phrase can vary depending on the context and the speaker's tone of voice. For example, the phrase can be used to express disappointment, as in "Ya Ein Ya Leil, I can't believe it's raining again." Alternatively, it can be used to express excitement, as in "Ya Ein Ya Leil, I can't wait for the concert tonight!"
True, we cal also just say “Ya leil” instead.. or we can repeat it “Ya leil ya leil”. I as an Arab have used this phrase quite a lot without really notice its significance lol… a very common way of using it is in this scenario when something annoying happens again “Ya leeeil… not again!!”
The other singer is the Algerian singer Cheb Mami. He sings typical Algerian Raï music. The song is about lost love and longing. If you liked this song you definitely should listen to Aicha from Cheb Khaled.
The style of music Ceb Mami sings is called Rai music. He studied it at aged 18 when he moved from Algiers to Paris, France in 1985. Over time Cheb Mami's music evolved into a blend of Mediterranean and Western influences, including Turkish, Flamenco, and Greek music, as well as Latin music. His voice is tinged with Andalusian-Spanish accents, and his music is an amalgamation of traditional and modern styles of singing.
This song has been a heavily underrated track. It came out during a time when other music genres were dominating the airwaves. I recall that time when it debuted, it didn't get as much attention as it deserved. Mostly because listeners weren't that interested in other cultures. But if you ask me, this song by Sting is a mind-opener, if that makes sense.
I was 18 when this came out, and there were definitely those of us cultured enough to appreciate how awesome this song was. Two different cultures and styles blending beautifully. On another note, "A Thousand Years" off the same album is another one I really like.
"Pensive" means to be lost or engaged in deep thought or reflection. Something like that. It's a root form that comes from Latin, and you see versions of it in Latin based languages. Like in Spanish "pensar" means "to think". I think if you go back far enough, it's meaning also meant to "weigh" or "ponder", but generally it's to do with the process of thought, thinking, or being thoughtful.
So happy that you react to one of my suggestions Miss Bisscute❤❤❤ thanks. Desert rose is a great song and a great collaboration of Sting with Cheb Mami, he sings in Algerian Arabic and he's great.
Cheb Mami has magical voice! What a combination! One of the very best songs ever! When I was a child I could listen to it all day and so do I now! ❤😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Hi. Ok here is, my recomendación of the day the band is LORDI from Finland, they won the Eurovision 2006 contest and the song is called "Hard Rock Hallelujah" I think is a funny song and also they play with monster custom😂😂 so you should watch that video.
Two other great Sting songs: “Shape of my heart” 30 years old, from “Ten summoner’s tales”, the same album that had “Fields of gold” on it (that you will definitely have heard somewhere)!
Miss Bisscute, I am very happy that you have reacted to one of my suggestions. Sting is such a good singer and songwriter and he has so many great solo songs, songs with the police and collaborations like Desert Rose. suggestions for future reactions Bisscute: Fortress Around Your Heart it's a master piece by Sting, hopefully you could react in other mixes Rock-pop with other cultures music, please you have to react to Peter Gabriel secret world tour live, song: In your eyes you will be fascinated with the mixture of sounds and music.
I remember when this song came out I did take notice of it and liked it, but it was MASSIVELY overshadowed by other albums of that year. Fuel, Tool, A Perfect Circle, SO MANY landmark albums in that time span ate up all my attention
"ya leil ya leil" is a very common phrase in Arabic songs, especially Egyptian ones. When a singer wants to flex his talent and shows his vocals capabilities, he would say this phrase with different and harder tones. same concept with Turkish singers and the word "Aman Aman"
This song always gives me memories of Iraq. Not the countryside, which was still gripped in war when I was there as a soldier. The parts around Baghdad where merchants catered to outsiders, Americans and others. It was a coalition war, so there was something for every nation involved.
Sting - 'If I ever lose my faith in you' ... 'Russians' ... 'They dance alone'... 🔥🔥 Cheb Mami was the guest vocalist - he's Algerian... and the track was inspired by North African/ Mediterranean grand music, similar to 'Kashmir' by Led Zeppelin.
Hey Bisscute, Check out: *FILTER - WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE* they're so underrated and also that is one of the most underrated song in the world *FYI: *FILTER* signed in to *Nuclear Blast Records* back in 2013 - 2014, you can check out on their song *No Love* music video

This song was featured in a luxury car commercial in the last few years. I think Jaguar maybe? I just remember it was a really nice brand and I hadn't heard this song in a long time before that. It's what drew me to it. Such a good song.
To clarify what "ya lel ya lel" means, arabic is a poetic language, lel means night, everyone knows the feeling when you're too stressed or whatever and just go out for a walk at night letting off steam talking to yourself, you're basically addressing no one but the lel. Idk how to explain it in better words lol, my bad if you still don't get it.
Sting wrote this song inspired by the novel DUNE (the one that's adapted into a movie in the '80s & adapted again as a movie in 2021 with Timothy Chalamet) because he's a big fan of the novel. He was actually in the '80s version of the movie as one of the villains.
😂 yes I know that moment, I'm Czech and there are many song in which I heard something completely different mainly when there were no lyrics around. 😅 Beautiful song, Sting have gift from God ❤ Greetings and keep on 👍
Seven Days, Shape of my Heart, Still my Beating Heart, Russians, Inside, Love is the Seventh Wave, the list of Sting excellent solo work is extensive. Cool reaction to this tune.
Something you might like a lot, Jackson Brown, "The Pretender". You really like the piano & he's one of the original OG piano players of the 70's. He was one of the artists' who was part of the "California" sound of the era. Along with The Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, Bernie Leadon and others.
I still really love this original song a lot. However, for me the best version of this song is now the one sung by Faouzia. 😮 I'd highly recommend checking out her performance on the Chinese Singer 2024 competition, it will melt your brain. I've heard her sing it live 2 years ago and this version is even better. 🤩
This is hand down a great collaboration between different artists great music achievement Cheb mami is not an ordinary artist he is extraordinary artist starting from 82 during the birth of genre music from Algeria "rai" this kind of music is unique and deep and the influence is similar to what Blues or rock to music in the west

Cheb Mami is an Algerian he is legende of singing his voice not like voices in the world even musical instruments afraid of his voice . His voice Rare its a musical instrument
The Police started out as a punk bad in England in the late 70's. England has a decent size Jamaican population - you soon heard the reggae influence in their music. Sting is like a global citizen. He fused a lot of jazz in Dream of the Blue Turtle. Here, a middle eastern sound. "Fragile" has South American influence "Fado??". Just super talented and one of my all time favorite....possibly more so with the Police but still awesome as a solo artist, too.
You might have heard it as part a car commercial. In planning the video and Sting’s choice for a car, the record company approached Jaguar. A deal was made, with the car company being allowed to use Sting’s song to help bolster their image with a younger generation. And as part of the deal, though Sting was not paid for his appearance in the commercial, he was allowed to use footage for the music video.
Pensive means in deep thought. Thank you for reviewing Desert Rose with with Sting & Cheb Mami. I have loved this song since it was released. So beautiful the blending of languages & song styles.
