The majority of the show is improvised so that the characters laughter is almost always genuine. Larry only writes the outline for the episode and scenes. But what is said in those scenes is mostly improvised.
Yeah definitely wouldn't work without Larry. Theres a dynamic between the two thats ridiculously odd couple esque. As a character Leon is funny but his funny is amplified ten fold in interactions with Larry. A spin-off would only be trying to replicate that.
