- Hi there! I'm Rosie and today we're starting a collage journal! I wanted a space where I could fill up a blank sketchbook with a bunch of collages and have a place to experiment and have fun.
Using magazine cutouts and images from thrifted books, I create weird and surreal handmade collage pieces to fill up a journal with handmade paper art.

Creating a handmade surreal art collage is easy! I share my tips and techniques on how I create my analog collages as I cut out pictures and illustrations out by hand with a small pair of scissors and a craft knife. Finding inspiration from old books is one of the most fun steps to this process. These can come from used books, encyclopedias, magazines, vintage postcards, or anything else you can find lying around your house. I find most of my books and magazines from thrift stores, antique stores, flea markets, Craigslist, or even on the side of the road! Watch as I arrange my elements and try different ideas as I talk through my process to create my final design. And, there is an added challenge of only being able to use materials that you have access to!

You inspire me to have fun with collage.
One of the things I do each day is make inchie quilt collages in a journal.
I started the 100 day project in 2021, making one a day. I recently completed day 570 and started journal #10.

I make ATC's and all sizes of Journals. You inspired me to make a surreal journal and it is 8"x 8".
Journals are great fun and yes it can take months or even years to finish. But the most important thing is to have fun.

I'm worried that the notebook will get so full of art that it won't close, but it has a rubber band to keep it closed 📓.I'd love to see a collage of the spreads 📖😄

Really like your journal collage plan. Since beginning to watch you, I began to cut out options from magazines to try out using the Rosie methods, in addition to my usual journal collages. I'm hoping I will be able to cut and insert items like you do...guess it will be a progressive skill!

I started using old books as a visual journal. Not only cutting up books and magazines for source material, but, also using a old book to house my work.

Its filled up now and so fun to watch now and than.
I did not do collages on the left side. It only lookes good when they match like in this case yours did.
But if they dont match its very distracting.
And the journal will bulk up if you do both pages and dont remove pages

My two cents: to avoid the book getting “gator mouth”, consider carefully removing some of the pages to prevent it from bulking up too much.
Love your creativity! I have been following your videos for awhile and you inspired me to create some collage this summer. At first, I tried doing collage in a sketchbook but found that the book got pretty bulky and was putting pressure on the spine. One solution is to remove about half or even more of the pages to allow for that expansion.
Lots of comments about gator mouth here! I will definitely keep that in mind as I continue :)

It looks like the lady fox is calling for take-out or delivery of space soup. So glad you're starting a collage journal. I do one a year. They are a great place to just play and not get hung up on making a perfect collage. Can't wait to see more!

Yours was the first video I have watched that had to do with magazine collage. I am a TOTAL newbie, and I found your video VERY interesting, not to mention entertaining. I related so much to your sense of fun! I've been collecting some magazines and cutting them up. I got some from my local Buy Nothing group, some from the library, and some from a thrift shop. These are wonderful. I love watching and being inspired by all your videos. I too keep collage journals and they will bulk up quickly. If you don’t want a huge alligator mouth, this is the time to remove a page or two from each of the signatures. Just be sure as you tear one side out to remove the other half as well and you won’t have pages falling apart.
I have never heard of this gator mouth until reading these comments, hahaha! I will definitely keep this in mind moving forward and will try to take out some pages. Thank you!!

Oh, I think you are going to have fun with that collage journal, but don’t close it and put it away, 🙀 they need to be on display 🙂 I love the juxtaposition of the feline and masculine images, I know, I am being perhaps stereotypical 🤔 still I think it works so well.
