This song found me while I was in absolute hell grieving my fiance who died 11 months ago. Ironically, she was born in Wichita. Was the first time I'd listened to music because every song reminded me of her and traveling all over America together.
Did you grip her love like a driver's license? Have you seen Babylon? Do you dream of where you've never been? Take to the road, son. Let the airwaves pull your eyes towards heaven.
Such an incredible song! When I was in 5th grade (I'm 32 now) we played a game in school where we all wrote down what artist(s) was our favorite. Then we had to pick out of a hat and guess who wrote what and I wrote soul coughing. Nobody got it lol.
I just was talking to a friendly stranger who thought I said Soul Coffin was my fav band.. typical! 😄 Feels good to get got though, even from the comments of yt
I lay on a bed with a few friends in a room on holiday stoned and freestyled on this song with a guitar and returning to the chorus from time to time, softer and softer til everybody was asleep. They all loved going to sleep that way they told me.
There was more good music, better music, and a hell of a lot more variety. STP, Alice in Chains, Soudgarden, Nirvana. All the same genre, but distinctly different.
Lived in Wichita, KS for almost a year. Made some life-long friends there, met some of the most genuine, honest, kind people I've ever had the pleasure of talking to. Wichita will always have a special place in my heart.
+Stephanie L Davis this song kicks ass....its one of their best songs along with: Soundtrack to mary, the idiot kings, super bon bon, janine, and blue eyed devil and $300
This song just makes me picture sitting in a field, some time in fall or winter, where the air is just warm enough you can bear it, just before the sun truly comes up, the entire skyline a beautiful greyish blue.
I'm from a little town right outside of Wichita...eldorado. This song resonates with me so much now. Just moved back to my small town after living in Wichita 3 years (biggest city in Kansas) even tho it's small it was my first taste of city life. I've been beat the fuck up from that shit but I want more.
Evocative lyrics for sure. But they have nothing to do with the guy (the "you" of the song) loving the girl, who was Doughty's real-life ex. The guy in the song is an a-hole (someone wearing a "cool hat of silence" is a good guy? Really?) who is possessive and dependent without actually loving the girl, and most of the song is Doughty ripping him a new one for it. At least that's what Doughty has said about the song, anyway.
2:14 I love this moment so much when the track gets more layered but its done in such a subtle way that doesnt draw attention to itself. Just amplifies the melancholic, roadtrip to nowhere kind of vibe this song has.

This may sound weird, but this band is almost unheard of in the UK. It's only through a housemate who often worked in the US and introduced me to them that I do tbh. But I love this album so much. I'm particularly stoked by the fact that both 'Psych' and 'Castle' used Super Bon Bon in their episodes... Let the man go through, let the man go through...
I was drunk on a beach in paradise in Tenerife, Spain and I walked along the water's edge in a tuxedo and sang this song a cappella, circling back to the "I'm half sick on the driiiiinks you mixed". Please god, take me back to the days.
Ahh the 90s, when you could be just as weird as you fucking wanted. Soul Coughing- didnt doesnt wont sound like any other band. Not everything needed to be fit in a box back then.

This whole album is so good. Do I want people to be addicted to heroin? No. But all those artists that we enjoy, they use drugs. Lots. It's their choice and they channel the experience to positive ends. I guess its OK, as long as they don't suffer.
I've always thought it said "sweet little meth" not myth lmao I mean YEARS I've thought this. It fit so well in my lifestyle at that time and I think I'll keep it as it resides in my head

If you like soul coughing you should listen to Mike Doughty's solo stuff. The song Fort Hood is really good
Still a Soul Coughing fan.
I never graduated from college, but I can/could recognize good music.
saw them live in germany way back in time. only about 30 paying people. but one of the best gigs ever
I'm feeling nostalgic and kind of crybaby about this song. Literally every word makes me weep.

Lyrics:
Signal got lost to the satellite
Got lost in the
Rideup to the
Plungedown
Man sends the ray of the electric light
Sends the impulse
Through the air
Down to home
And you can stand
On the arms of the Williamsburg Bridge
Crying
Hey man, well this is Babylon
And you can fire out on a bus
To the outside world
Down to Louisiana
You can take her with you
I've seen the
Rains of the real world
Come forward on the plain
I've seen the Kansas of your sweet little myth
You've never seen it, no
I'm half sick on the drinks you mixed
Through your
True dreams
Of Wichita
True dreams
Of Wichita
Brooklyn like a sea in the asphalt stalks
Push out dead air from a parking garage
Where you stand with the keys and your cool head of silence
While you grip her love like a driver's license
I've seen you
Fire up the gas in the engine valves
I've seen your hand turn saintly on the radio dial
I've seen the airwaves
Pull your eyes towards heaven
Outside Topeka in the phone lines
Her good teeth smile was winding down
Engine sputters ghosts out of gasoline fumes
They say you had it, but you sold it
You didn't want it, no
I'm half drunk on babble you transmit
Through your
True dreams
Of Wichita
True dreams
Of Wichita
Punch it
I got, uh, fed
I got, uh, too much things on bounce, uh, my head
I got to burn 'em up
I got to burn 'em uptown
I got to go uptown, uptown
I got a thing
I got a little bit pushed
Got to stand on the corner and bellow for mush
I got a bomb
I got a baby bomb bomb
Got to stand on the corner and bellow for my friend Tom
I got a thing, I got to thing it
I got to thing
Team
I got to run my side
True dreams
