Awesome video! One of the more helpful ones out there! Thanks a lot 👌 I've come up with a theoretical question on the possibility of using a computer to record a sound on the ISD 1820. 1. Desolder and remove the microphone 2. Strip the ends of a 3.5mm jack 3. Solder the wires to the circuit board where the mic was 4. Plug 3.5mm jack into audio jack on computer 5. Press record on chip and play sound through computer In theory, this would allow the chip to record the signal being transmitted through the 3.5mm jack! But I've also thought of counterarguments, haha: • The 3.5mm jack is line-level. The ISD 1820 is expecting a mic-level signal to send to the "on-chip preamp" (according to a spec sheet). According to an article I googled, "connecting a line-level source […] to a mic-level input will cause the sound to be loud and distorted because the line signal is much stronger than what the mic input will accept". So that sucks. But perhaps difference in voltage can be mitigated by attaching a resistor to the 3.5mm? Step it down from the 1.000V range to the .001V-.010V range... Ok, my brain is hurting, I'll think about this part later. • I don't even know if the signals are compatible. I mean, I think they're both analog, and they obviously both involve sound frequencies, but what do I know? • All the 3.5mm cables I have lying around are stereo, so I would only be able to attach one channel to the circuit. I think this is inconsequential, though. If anyone is still reading this comment, tell me your thoughts! I'll probably be experimenting with this in the near future :)
First and foremost, yes... read the whole thing. Sounds like some great ideas to me and actually already more thought out than my first thoughts (I had not considered the counter arguments you came up with). If you get it to work I'd love to hear how it turned out. I also agree that the stereo input seems inconsequential to the effect. On the face of it the wiring seems straight forward but there is definitely a reason there are different input jacks for microphone and aux sources. Thanks for taking the time to watch my video and post the very kind comment... and follow-up thoughts.
you can do this, you have to turn the output on the pc way down.. i have done this before making operator errror messages for my voicemail 15-20 yrs ago.. and for your argument with stereo edit the sound file and convert it to mono
First of all i want to appreciate you that you are trying to give answers to the questions on almost every question in the comment box , while other youtubers hardly do that.(sorry for my bad english). Sir, i m a house wife and doesn't have enough technical knowledge ,but i really really want to make my own customized soft doll for my toddler.can you please guide me in some details about what things i have needed to make a doll which have inbuilt buttons in her both palms and in both the feets and when pressed any of button, a prerecorded audio plays.for example, when we press its right palm , a morning time routine audio plays, when left palm press, a lullaaby plays, when we touch or press its right feet, a bed time routine audio plays, etc. I will highly appreciate you if you guide me in this project. Kindly reply back sir, I m impatiently waiting for your reply.Thank You !
Sorry for such a delay in reply on this one but it has been a challenging spot of time for a bit. The good news is that the exact type of thing you are looking for is sold on places like Amazon. I think this one (noted with more details in the video description) may be what you are looking for: Voice Module, 30s Recordable Music Sound Voice Module Chip 0.5W with Button Cell Battery (Wired Double Button Control)
Somebody actually did this lol. They replaced the sound files of a Buzz Lightyear with swears in the same voice as the original and tried returning it to the store for laughs
Great question and yes... but it requires a different chip board. This one is designed for a single recording but there are others that will run sequences of recordings in order with each new push of the button. I'd love to hear how it turns out if you get a chance to come back with an update. Thank you for taking time to watch my video and post a comment. I really appreciate it!
Looking to add a sound file to a lightgun build. Out of all the sound recorders you tested, which one did you find had the fastest start to play once pushing the play button? The lag of some of these is unusable in this particular instance but I'm sure there's something out there that would work. Thanks!
Man that is a great question and to be honest, now I am a bit disappointed that I never considered tracking that. In total seriousness I do not know because I was too focused on quality of playback and volume. As best as I recall this chip had a response time similar to a soundboard on a cell phone. BTW, love the idea with the sound file for a lightgun. Thank you for taking time to watch my video and post a comment. I really appreciate it!
@@DialedInDIY Tons of soundfonts out there. Went with a DFPlayer Mini MP3 Player. Uses a micro SD card but plays fast and doesn't need an Arduino or anything extra to function. Haven't installed it in the gun yet however all my testing leads me to think it will work great. It's also the one guys use in Star Wars blasters and light sabers so lots of info out there for it.
I understand if you're not able to answer this but I do have an inquiry. I have a toy that moves, and I'm not able to replace the sound that's on the board inside it. I'm assuming that if I remove the speaker from the original board that will eliminate the problem of the original sound playing. So if I did that, and added as well a new board with a new sound, would there be a way for me to wire the new board up to the same button, so that the button both triggers the sound from the new board and the movement from the old board? I hope this makes sense >-
Hi great video, would you be able to recommend a sound board that would have a enough memory to play several hours of auto at good quality. I would also need to include buttons with functions such as play/stop, next, previous almost like an mp3 player. Thanks.
I am not sure what size will fit that also lets you have multiple files run like the original board... at least not one that fits inside the case/box inside Woody. I've considered using similar boards attached to the original box but have not yet tried.
Great question. Some of the modules support repeat playback. It will say in the details section from the seller. Usually those will repeat up to a specific amount of time and then turn off. Hope that helps.
Was a very informative video but I'm still slightly confused. Basically I have a mini fridge that plays 3 different sounds when you open it but would I be able to reprogramme the sound chip to just play one track that I have on a file or would I have to replace the sound chip in order to programme it with a sound/track I want?
Great question. The answer depends on the chip on board. Most likely you will have to replace the sound board. I've yet to find one inside anything that can be reprogrammed unfortunately.
@@DialedInDIY Hi, I recently decided to try give it another go and have opened up the compartment where the soundboard lies, if I sent you a picture of the soundboard would you be able to know if it needed a new board and potentially how I could create a module that plays a jingle?
Not sure if Light activated module is capable of connecting to pc, i really want to save a specific audio file on it that plays while you open a present :D, any thoughts?
I think what you are describing is very doable. The sound board would connect for audio download and a separate light module could be used for the trigger/switch action. Is that what you were working towards making work?
im thinking of trying something like this but i need to have at least 6 different phrases that it either plays randomly or in order (doesnt really matter which) is this possible?
Hey I'm curious to know how those electronic floor mats work. Where you step on them and they play music or make other things happen. Do you think you can do a video where you take one of those apart and explain how it works?
Amazing video. Thank for sharing so much. And I have a question could you please tell me what happen if I want to add sound into a book, and when I open each page, the different sound can be turned on automatically ? And when I close to open next page, the old sound will be turned off and the new sound of the next page will be turned on?
So i wanted to do a pull string system with a custom sound. Can i find it on internet easily ? Or Can i turn the device you used to work with a pull string system?
The item I used in this video will do the sound and a pull string mechanism can be connected to it for the trigger/switch action. I'm guessing a pull string switch can be found on line (seems like everything can these days) but I have not searched before. If you find something that works for you I'd love to hear about it. Thanks for taking the time to watch my video and post a comment.
Do you mean having a longer recording that plays back for part of it and then when it is activated again it plays from where it last stopped? I am thinking that is what you mean and I do think there are some that do that. There are definitely modules that allow for multiple recordings and then they play back in sequence each time it is activated.
Great channel. I have been trying to figure out how I could hack my son's Baby Einstein Mini Magic Touch Piano and change the sounds. I essentially want to turn load drum machine sounds. Can you please make a video on this or direct me to where I could find information on how to make this happen!!!
Thank you so much for the kind words. I like the idea you have and I think there are several ways to do this that range from somewhat simple to more complex. On the more simple side you could change the connection to each of the keys to separate sound chips by connecting the button under the key to the trigger connection on the chip. To be more efficient you could work down the options of micro-controllers to program a sound to each key. I'm wondering if Arduino or Raspberry Pi could do this easily.
Wow! This is EXACTLY what I've been looking for all day. Question about using different speakers though, is there anything that needs to be thought about when getting a higher quality speaker? Like do you need to alter the voltage, and is there a certain type of speaker I should look for that can give me a decent range as far as playback? Also, I know you showed using an upgraded power source and speaker with the ISD1820, but what about upgrading one of the ones that you can directly upload your own sounds to? Thanks!
Great questions. If you are trying to go big with speakers then you'll need an audio driver / power source but I've not needed to do that yet. I also use power packs to match the board requirements re volts. The other chip sets you can download to should do the same but if you double check the part specs from the seller you can get the precise limits. Hope that helps.
I want to mount at least 10 push buttons on a panel and when I push each button a different message plays and I can change the messages as needed, adjust volume etc. What device do you recommend I can use to accomplish this?
I'm so very new to this but my son is a huge fan of Ghostbusters and I'd love to make him a proton pack for Halloween! Complete with activation and shooting sounds of course...where do I start? 😬
[So sorry for the delay... life kinda got in the way for a bit] This sounds like a really fun project. I think the first place to start is the design and size. Once you have that in mind you can decide what you have space to add in. Sounds like you will need lights (some form of LEDs), a sound chip, a speaker and a battery pack to run them all. Thanks for taking the time to watch my video and post a comment.
I'm wondering how much work it'd be to switch out the recordings on educational toys for toddlers (with numbers, letters, animal/object names etc most often from Fisher-Price, ). Most only come in English, but I'd like to hack them to say those words in my language (very few toys, if any, speak my language). Any tips?
Very doable... I have used the soundboard from a "non-toy" to replace a toy sound board for more comical effect... but I was "asked" to switch it back. LOL
i still got a woody doll, i dont need it anymore but when i can change it what it says it would be a nice present for my next boyfriend, would be awesome ^^
The buttons have different playback features but run the same audio clip/sound (hope I gave you the answer you were looking for). Thank you for taking time to watch my video and post a comment. I really appreciate it!
I've been using 3.7v Li-Ion batteries with great success. When the space is available I use the size 18650 since I salvage those from older battery packs. The seller indicates that they have a 10 second record / playback duration but I have found you actually get a few more seconds. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to post a comment (sorry for the delayed response).
First of all... that sounds like an awesome idea! Most things like that have chip boards that cannot be re-recorded so you would have to do an Elmo Operation and change out the sound board.
I am refurbishing a large framed backlit waterfall scene and want to add a waterfall sound track that plays when plugged in. I'm a novice so not sure how to go about it. Thanks for any advice.
Have you ever come across a solution with a pcb like these that when button is pressed plays a recorded message then allows user to record their own message and each time this occurs, a new, unique message file is created and stored. Kind of like the concept of a voicemail box but on a pcb so it can be put into a unique application?
Ah, I like that idea.... something more than "there's a snake in my boot." Thank you for taking time to watch my video and post your feedback. I really appreciate it! [So sorry for the delay... life kinda got in the way for a bit]
Just want to make sure I understand the Q... do you mean see if one of these would fit in a fingerlings? If that is the question then I think it would need a smaller device. The speaker and chip would not fit inside. Thank you for taking time to watch my video and post a comment. I really appreciate it!
@@DialedInDIY its somewhat close. So basically what I mean is if it's possible to do this but with a toy like fingerlings, untamed or grimlings if that make sense. I wanna know since I wanna make a custom fingerlings using so knockoff one and replace the sounds to fit the animal. Also if possible could you do a video on it?
Great question... it is built into the board. For a point of reference, if you look at roughly the 1 minute mark of the video you can see a round, black spot in the top left corner. That is the microphone. Thank you for taking the time to post a comment/question!
I appreciate the feedback. Thanks for taking the time to watch my video , post a comment and giving a sub! Hope you like checking out some of my other videos too.
hey i was wondering if there are chips like this that could record 3-5mins of audio? because i saw on the description that this can only record up to 10secs :((
There are chips that can record much longer clips... the price point starts to go up quick though. I think one of the items I noted in the description was a greeting card type of chip that can record for much longer. [So sorry for the delay... life kinda got in the way for a bit]
I'm curious about whether it's possible to re-record a set of talking flash cards. I'd love to get a set for my grandson, but we're Australian and as you know, we have a very unique accent. I'd rather he didn't pick up an American accent
I am making a stuffed toy of Mr Noseybonk and i am wanting to put a sound maker in it ti play the song 'A hippo Named Hubbard' this will hopefully help.

Hi. I'm getting ready to start making creepy dolls for Halloween. I need them to be sound, light or motion activated and most importantly, be able to randomize several recordings. So, a doll that says 5 things, one each time it is activated, then says another thing the next time it is activated. Is there something already available for that?
Thank you so much! I greatly appreciate the feedback. If you add voices to them I'd love to hear how it turned out for you. I think those should work great because there is plenty of room to work with inside.
Hello, I was hoping you could help me with something regarding a sound thing like this. I had a box that when opened would play a song but when I put in a battery one day the battery exploded and the metal parts that hold the battery on place fell off. Is it possible to fix it or would it be better if I bought another sound module thing?
Depending upon how much damage was done to the other parts it could totally be fixable. If the battery left chemicals inside then you need to see if it can be safely cleaned up (which also depends on the type of battery). My guess is that the metal parts that came out slip into a section where they can actually be put back. If that is the case then it is simply a matter of making sure the metal contacts/touches the spots needed between the battery and the wires. I have this happen on old items that batteries were left inside for far too long. Usually I can just put parts back, clean the corrosion off with some sandpaper and get everything working again.
Hey bro, i am new at this, i am really looking for how to be able of make those talking botton, i dont even speak the lenguaje but i could totaly undestend what you habe teach here. There are a posibily for you to teach us how to make those talking botton please?
If you are wanting to add something like this to another device that you are powering up independently perhaps you can wire the button mechanism to the on/off switch of the device. If the device you are connecting it to is the source of power for this chip set then it is probably even easier. Just make sure the power from device is compatible with power the chip set needs. Hope that makes sense.
@@DialedInDIY that helps I’ll def need a voltage reducer but I need a way to bypass the button so it plays when voltage is supplied all I need to do is get it to play when I start my car

I've come up with a theoretical question on the possibility of using a computer to record a sound on the ISD 1820.
1. Desolder and remove the microphone
2. Strip the ends of a 3.5mm jack
3. Solder the wires to the circuit board where the mic was

Hi, what kind of battery do I need? is a 9 v battery too much? what is the name of the one you use in the video? Thanks!
I'm wondering how much work it'd be to switch out the recordings on educational toys for toddlers (with numbers, letters, animal/object names etc most often from Fisher-Price, ). Most only come in English, but I'd like to hack them to say those words in my language (very few toys, if any, speak my language). Any tips?
What happens if i want to change a sound on a already made sound board
Very doable... I have used the soundboard from a "non-toy" to replace a toy sound board for more comical effect... but I was "asked" to switch it back. LOL
i still got a woody doll, i dont need it anymore but when i can change it what it says it would be a nice present for my next boyfriend, would be awesome ^^
Hello!, three sounds between same button??
The buttons have different playback features but run the same audio clip/sound (hope I gave you the answer you were looking for). Thank you for taking time to watch my video and post a comment. I really appreciate it!
Great project idea my friend!
Thank you very much! I've had allot of fun making everything from stuff for kids to prank projects. Hope you are having a great weekend!
I am making a Buzz Lightyear voice box and a woody voice box
could leds be added to this. And better still, could it be linked to a microcontroller?
Which sound card or chip do i use to put pinball sounds in a cardboard pinball ?
Is there a way to add a part for a Bluetooth so the sound can go to a Bluetooth speaker?
what size battery did you end up using? Also how long can you record on it?
I've been using 3.7v Li-Ion batteries with great success. When the space is available I use the size 18650 since I salvage those from older battery packs. The seller indicates that they have a 10 second record / playback duration but I have found you actually get a few more seconds. Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to post a comment (sorry for the delayed response).
how do i change it if its already in the toy? for example, changing a skinned tickle me elmo from laughing to saying "i watch you while you sleep"
Just curious, where can we learn more in-depth about chips, sound cards, tools, and etc? Any online resources?
Great question that i don't have a great answer for. I usually do a search for items and tutorials. Thanks so much for watching.
How much time is the memory of the recording and how many times can i play it again?
If you got another woody doll you could give it movie accurate phrases Like his actual pull string sayings
Ah, I like that idea.... something more than "there's a snake in my boot." Thank you for taking time to watch my video and post your feedback. I really appreciate it! [So sorry for the delay... life kinda got in the way for a bit]
Can u do it with the USB type c amplifier board module change the voice when it says connected
How many seconds does this module record??
Hi
Want to understand possibilities to make a musical cigarette or candle lighter .
Please let know if it is possible and how
Thank you
I want to change what is on a see n say how hard would that be?
Amazing, now i will try make a tf2 medic that wil laugh everytime i press him
Awesome! Thanks for watching and taking time to comment.
Can you see if you can on fingerlings?
Just want to make sure I understand the Q... do you mean see if one of these would fit in a fingerlings? If that is the question then I think it would need a smaller device. The speaker and chip would not fit inside. Thank you for taking time to watch my video and post a comment. I really appreciate it!
@@DialedInDIY its somewhat close. So basically what I mean is if it's possible to do this but with a toy like fingerlings, untamed or grimlings if that make sense. I wanna know since I wanna make a custom fingerlings using so knockoff one and replace the sounds to fit the animal. Also if possible could you do a video on it?
is there a way to get ones that can play multiple lines?
How can I install different music/recording to the chip?
How did you record? Where is the microphone ???
Great question... it is built into the board. For a point of reference, if you look at roughly the 1 minute mark of the video you can see a round, black spot in the top left corner. That is the microphone. Thank you for taking the time to post a comment/question!
Is it possible to *upload* the sound file from the chip?
This kind does that 4:55
Just what I needed! Subbed
I appreciate the feedback. Thanks for taking the time to watch my video , post a comment and giving a sub! Hope you like checking out some of my other videos too.
Doesn't it actually need more current than a button cell can supply?
hey i was wondering if there are chips like this that could record 3-5mins of audio? because i saw on the description that this can only record up to 10secs :((
There are chips that can record much longer clips... the price point starts to go up quick though. I think one of the items I noted in the description was a greeting card type of chip that can record for much longer. [So sorry for the delay... life kinda got in the way for a bit]
@@DialedInDIY I saw one on Amazon that plays for 7200 (or some such unbelieveable amount) seconds
Would use this to replace the Christmas songs on a singing Santa with like a Cannibal Corpse song just for the laughs.
Superb.
Thank you very much!
Got the first reference but falling short on the second. Hope all goes well. Thanks for watching and taking time to comment.
@@DialedInDIY thanks. Sorry i meant a 'hippo called hubert' thats the mr noseybonk theme music sort of.
I love it... that is perfect. I found a YT video that had a link in the description ti diwnload the wave file; ruclips.net/video/7T7CTyjJP2Q/видео.html
How can I change the sound in reverse tone device in my car?
Hi, not sure if you mean a back up warning tone or the whining sound that actually comes from the spur gears.
Hi. I'm getting ready to start making creepy dolls for Halloween. I need them to be sound, light or motion activated and most importantly, be able to randomize several recordings. So, a doll that says 5 things, one each time it is activated, then says another thing the next time it is activated. Is there something already available for that?
So cool, I love making small robots! And why I was finding this vid? Bcs I have fnaf plushies and I wanna add them voice :D
@@DialedInDIY thank you much for replying. I ended up taking it to a repair man and it thankfully works 😊
@@ishahakeem So glad that it worked out and glad that you were able to find someone who could do the repair.
Thank you.
Where can i get these wires?
I hacked a talking pumpkin made by Gemmy. I'm going to use a circuit like this to make it come to life with my own recordings!
Would you pretty please do an original 1990s furby?
That would be fun... but first I'd have to find one. [So sorry for the delay... life kinda got in the way for a bit]
Hey bro, i am new at this, i am really looking for how to be able of make those talking botton, i dont even speak the lenguaje but i could totaly undestend what you habe teach here. There are a posibily for you to teach us how to make those talking botton please?
Hi i need help I just want to play one sound a few seconds long when the device is powered up
If you are wanting to add something like this to another device that you are powering up independently perhaps you can wire the button mechanism to the on/off switch of the device.
I love to record and speakers
Thanks for taking time to watch my video and post a comment. I really appreciate it.
Would you happen to know the name of the one at 4:53?
I'm pretty sure (but not positive) that it is Voice Module, 30s Recordable Music Sound Voice Module Chip 0.5W with Button Cell Battery (Wired Double Button Control) -- listed in the description with a link.
Cool!
Thank you very much!
FYI, this is the perfect example of a comment that I did not receive a notification for (I saw this when I came to reply to the other comment).
Is there a way to do this but have multiple messages, each one activated by a different switch? For example, if I wanted to put it in a stuff animal and have one message in the arm, one in the leg and one in the stomach but only one chip.
Absolutely!.. there are versions made that have these kind of options built in. Sorry for the delay in reply... I really do appreciate that you took the time to watch and post a comment!
@@DialedInDIY Thanks, do you have any recommendations for one that has, one board, with batteries, microphone, and speakers, but that can record multiple messages each one being activated by a different switch.
@@shoshannahnewman2071 I have not used one yet but I have seen several like that on Amazon and other sites. Sorry I dont have a specific one that I can recommend.
