The mimosa pudica aka “sensitive plant” has been a plant that I’ve loved but it doesn’t love me back when I grow it indoors. I’ve tried many years to grow indoors, grow from seed, use a humidity dome/humidifier, all the things but at this point, I’m fully content with the fact that I probably was probably just doing too much. They can be grown as an annual here. I’m in zone 5b, and once they flower I can harvest the seeds and grow them again next year. So I can still enjoy them this season and be less stressed about it. What plant do you refuse to give up on?
The only plant I refuse to give up on is my Christmas cactus. I inherited it from my grandmother, so I do everything I can to help it thrive. I am not a plant person and have two brown thumbs, so this is quite the task! 😄
I have large mimosa trees in my yard. One is close to 20 feet tall if not taller. And 2 around 10 feet. They are beautiful! But I live in my great uncles house and he wants the 2 smaller ones gone. I'm going to hang on to them as long as I can!
Thyme it's a running joke between my siblings and I that when I bring a new thyme plant home they'll say "o is it that time of the year for the yearly sacrifice?"
This plant grows like crazy out under scorching hot sun with no rain😂 There’s a huge field of this plant near my school and accidentally steping on these is so painful😭
Its always school 😅... in primary school we tricked a bunch of 1st grade kids into thinking we were using magic to close it then I made made them pay $20 so that they can make it sleep lollll it only worked once 😅
@@rf1283 Dr Gowri Subrahmanya of Muktinaga temple recommends crushing the juice of the leaves & drink it to cure piles. I haven't tried . Thanks for the info 👍
I bought a little one, and I was so excited. Left it in my bedroom, came back with its new pot and it was gone. My cat ate it. Was very sad. It does, however, grow prolifically at my boyfriends house. I'll be stealing a bigger one soon lol.
I am familiar with this plant had a project in horticulture on this plant in particular to go with it " plants do behave like animals" .... only slower (mostly underground) they MOVE some faster like this one most far slower got an A in that class especially
We have so many mimosa trees but their leaves don’t close when touched. The newer leaves will close up when it rains but that’s it lol. And man, the pink blooms and smell is AMAZING!!!
I dont think this is the same as the mimosa trees that have pink flowers. This is a ground plant that spreads low and is very thorny. The Leaves do looks similar.
@@shermich90Yea it’s definitely just like a different type or species? I don’t know the proper term 😆. It was so odd the other day… I uprooted a mimosa tree that had been growing for about a year to transplant it and of course the leaves on it closed up (like it does when it rains) but THEN I noticed a couple hours later that all the mimosa trees in our yard (about 5 in a lil less than an acre) all their leaves had closed up too, but it was a nice sunny day and they were open and normal that morning. I stopped for a second and was like woah… I wonder if they give off some sort of like defensive warning type chemical that other mimosa trees recognize that causes them to close their leaves? They stayed like that until the next afternoon and the tree I transplanted was fine the next day as well. It was just so bizarre!
Thank You!! I enjoy your videos! When I first paid attention to it here in Texas, I thought it was a mimosa tree and tried to transplant it. 🤦🏻♀️ We had a tree when I was growing up. I just enjoy these little things in my yard. 🤷🏻♀️ God Bless You!!♥️🌻
Random fun fact: there's one of these (named Stanley) at the Living With The Land greenhouse at Epcot in Disney World. It's the only plant they keep that isn't edible. The show it off for educational purposes on the Behind The Seeds tour.
U have so many plant rescue success stories literally makes me so jealous. 😭 I can never even save my own plants from dying :/ have u ever had fails when trying to rescue a plant?
My kid loves this plant he is always shaking it and touching the leaves to make it close. I can't wait to see it bloom. I've seen a mimosa tree and those blooms are gorgeous and look similar to this flower.❤
Awe please keep it! I worked at Beauty and the Beast show for kids at Disney world. They plant sensitive plants along the queue for the children! The kids would say “MOM the plant moved!!!” It seemed pretty cool to them! I found some growing near my house, I might take a small piece so I can grow it too! Thanks for the post!
I really love your channel. I’ve bought 3 carnivores plants because of your videos. And I’ve attempted to save some peace Lillie’s and pothos that I let get root rot. Thank you for your tips! ❤
I love that little sensitive plant. ❤❤ When I was working at the greenhouse I had gotten a few but I killed them completely off unfortunately. Where I was living at it was just way too dark for it.
Are you able to grow it into a tree or is the climate too harsh for that? I've always seen it as a tree and it's kinda weird to see it as a little plant. I had one in front of my house for almost 20 years. It only got cut after a huge storm and it resisted veryyy windy, hot and humid weather with little to no rain in the summer. Maybe she really doesn't like all the pampering
I keep killing my creeping Charlie, any tips? I’ve repotted her, changed her soil, left her alone, and cut off dead parts. She doesn’t look like she has root rot either :s
I keep killing my grandmother’s German ivy, but manage to save one tiny cutting to root again…but now I’ve killed it permanently, unless someone I gave cuttings to still has some🤞🤞🤞🤞 WHAT IS THE SECRET TO KEEPING THIS SOFT-LEAVED “German” IVY ALIIIIIVE????
Its a tree isnt it? The albiza family which it is part of is like 150 species of tropical tree. I have a few silk trees for bonsai. I also have a 5 year old one one property.
In Hawai'i, we call it sleeping grass. There is a Hawaiian name for it: pua hilahila (poo-uh hee-luh hee-luh). It means "bashful flower." Never really heard anyone use it beside my grandma, though. 😅
Morir-vivir, its what we call it in Puerto Rico. Yes a weed, but sooo cool. I've got seeds but scared to plant them. Imma doing it this year!!!💪. How long did you keep it inside? Im in Northern Illinois.
I live in Trinidad and I remember running over this plant barefoot in the fields. Not the best feeling😢 😂. As kids we used to touch it and say Mary! Mary! close your door.
I remember finding these outside when I was growing up. I’d sit and play with them for HOURS! I haven’t seen them in nature as an adult and was today years old when I made this observation. We call them touch-me-nots in MO.
I choked when I saw them being sold for $8. They're weeds in my country though. I used to spend hours playing with them. Or at least an hour---because you need to wait for them to open up again. 😅 the purple flowers are very pretty too.
This is one of my favorite plants! I have a whole packet of seeds from when I asked for them for one of my childhood birthdays. 😂 I've already killed like 2-3 of these over the years, but I'm trying again this year!
Noxious weed (kill on site) here in Australia But, you’ll be happy to know, that star fruit saplings do the same thing, it’s an adaption to windy and aggressive climates
That stuff is EVERYWHERE in my home town. My cousin and I used to go look for it on the stone wall outside our house as kids. Kept us entertained for hours.
a touch me not😭😭 in our country, this plant will just grow wherever it can😭during our childhood,it was a fav hobby to touch the leaves to see the leaves drooping
It is a weed 😅 in Costa Rica we call them Dormilonas because they “go to sleep” when you touch them. When I was little I loved going around and poking all the little leaves in a big patch that grew on the side on my neighbors little yard. But they really grew all over in big patches.
😂😂 I'm screaming so hard rn😂😂 How is a weed on my country in a container being watered in other I'm laughing cause wth lol never guessed someone would do this
This is the Mimosa that grows into a tree, right? I've definitely had chamberbitter in my yard which looks similar but stays small. My mom loves the tree and I keep meaning to start one for her. I know where there is one growing and hopefully I can get some seeds this year.
😂😂😂😂 We called it sleeping grass and I've stepped on it so many times as a kid that I'm triggered seeing it here. That thing is super hardy. I hated pulling that weed up as a kid. The thorns always go through the gloves.
I know that plant - but i never knew it could be an indoor plant. They grow big and hearty in humid climates like the Deep South. Drown that hoe and wish it good luck 😂
I have so many of those weeds in my yard in Hawaii. It is a nuisance. It has thorns. I’m constantly trying to pull it out of my veggie garden. Glad you value it. 🤣
They are everywhere in Japan there are also "fake" ones that don't move by touching. Me and my brothers used play a game "you touch the fake ones you lose" lol
We have a lot of this growing in our yards. It has spikes that you have to be very careful in removing them. They grow along with the grass. But they're cute when shy 😁
I thought this looked familiar it might be in the same family at least but I swear I'm always pulling something out of the ground that looks like this (WV)
In Hindi it's called chui mui meaning someone who is very sensitive that even a touch can hurt them. They do have very hurtful thorns though but are sooo cool to play with and yes they're weed.
If this is the same mimosa with the pretty pink fluffy flowers and awesome sweet smell, then it grows great outside in the humid south. Central MS zone 8
In indonesia we called them putri malu which translate into Shy princess in english. When i was a kid my favorite thing is find them and just swept them with my hand and watched them close their leaves

Calla lilies. They hate me and I love them.
In the Philippines we call this "Makahiya" from the root word "hiya" which means "shy" and grows well as a weed
Then there's this saying when you pluck an open leaf you'll be rich
The satisfaction whenever i used to see these at the streets lol
@Emely Phan just for clarification the pronunciation is HE YA not HI YA
They have gorgeous plants in the Philippines! Especially the orchids, which are my favorite!
Tama
This plant grows like crazy out under scorching hot sun with no rain😂 There’s a huge field of this plant near my school and accidentally steping on these is so painful😭
They are filled with tons of thorns! What a cool invasive plant!
I live in the subtropics and they thrive here. Edit: lots of water here
Lol. I just bought one to grow myself. It's small. Noted. Spikes. 🥶
Its always school 😅... in primary school we tricked a bunch of 1st grade kids into thinking we were using magic to close it then I made made them pay $20 so that they can make it sleep lollll it only worked once 😅
We called it Putri Malu (Shame plant) here in Indonesia. Some nursery/plant collector have pink variegated one 😌
Kalo Shame diindonesiain jadinya bukan sekedar malu, malunya karena terhina 😅 Lebih deket ke Shy kayaknya. Shy Princess.
Shy Princess
Everytime i see putri malu, i always have an urge to touch the leaves
There’s pink ones?!!😱🤗🤩
It's a weed . It really grows everywhere in India. The leaves have medicinal value.
Not the leaves but the thorns from the stem are used in Ayurveda.
Stems and roots good for insomnia 😊
@@rf1283 Dr Gowri Subrahmanya of Muktinaga temple recommends crushing the juice of the leaves & drink it to cure piles. I haven't tried . Thanks for the info 👍
Yes! And we call it touch-me-not plant in English, if I'm not wrong. Regional names are endless.
You can make sabzi with the leaves .
Its a weed here in the Philippines and its annoying when you are walking in grassy areas cos this mf is thorny 😂
They are so sharp! Sensitive plants but they’ll tear you up.
True! We just step on in while playing.. 🤷♀️😅

A touch me not plant! I learned about it in like 5th grade.

these grow wild where i live! had no idea people kept them as houseplants
we call them "pokok semalu" in Malaysia and "malu" means shy. It's so funny how most languages are so straightforward in naming this plant 😂😂😂
I left mine on the windowsill, which made it unhappy due to the intense light. It's also a thirsty bugger. I have to water it every 3 days.
We call it touch me not in India... And girl you are not the only one who have killed it 5 times I have killed it more than 5 times 😔...
Oh my god I have killed her so many times a well…it is a very difficult cutie plant!!!
In my country India , it grows nicely without any special care , when i was a kid I used to touch it it was so fun back then
Japanese people call this plant “Ojigi Sou”, literally means “Bow(ing) grass”. Such a cute naming better than sensitive plant
Haha why you treating it posh when it grows in the heat with no water…😂
Throw it outside during this summer: it’ll thrive
U have so many plant rescue success stories literally makes me so jealous. 😭 I can never even save my own plants from dying :/ have u ever had fails when trying to rescue a plant?

Its putri malu in indonesia or shy princess if you translate it. It just a weed that grow everywhere in my neighborhood
makahiya will grow in the poorest conditions, love her though 🫶🏼
