What if death wrote you a love a song?
This tune was inspired by two of my favorite poems: Emily Dickinson’s “Because I could not stop for Death” and Dylan Thomas’s “Do not go gentle into that good night.” In Dickinson’s poem, she imagines Death as a chivalrous driver of a carriage stopping to pick her up. That inspired me to write this song from the perspective of Death if it were a suitor-someone who has been in love with you your your whole life and has been waiting to take you away.
Special thanks to Toni Lindgren for lending her upright bass skills to this little demo track. She was in a remote location without access to video, so we just have her audio for this. I added some shaker and keys as well. We’ll eventually record this song properly in a studio and put it on an album one day, but I wanted to share it with you like this first. Lyrics are below!
We have rescheduled most of our 2020 concerts. Take a look at the dates and see if we're coming to your town later this year or early next year! reinadelcid.com/#shows

Lyrics to "Death's Love Song":
Dear, it’s time we met
yes it’s true, you don’t know me yet
but dust to dust
you’ll learn to trust
that in the end, there is only us
Don’t believe what they say of me
the poets’ slander and heresy
my face is cruel but my love is true
and I won’t rest till I have you
Through every season of your life
I watched you hold your lovers tight
and how I burned just to wait my turn
to take your hand and lead you off this earth
Oh my sweet thing, fear not
you just board my ship and we’ll take off
to fare the darkest sea, the gentlest night
Take that body and give it up
you just step inside my chariot
Oh, you’ve never had a lover quite like me
so let’s ride to eternity
Like the ones before you
you fear what’s in store for you
and so you’ll run under the golden sun
heading west till it’s all said and done
With every drag on your cigarette
do you feel how close I get?
Take your pills if you feel ill
they might break my hold
but they won’t break my will
Now you’re pale and short of breath
sit down with your spinning head
It’s almost time, I can see the signs
that soon you’ll forever be mine
Chorus
Let go of those weary bones
and just climb aboard my ferryboat
I will row us gently through the dying light
I will keep you company
as we drift toward immortality
Oh you never had a lover quite like me
so let’s ride to eternity - Видеоклипы
"My face is cruel, but my love is true, and I won't rest till I have you"
Death's love song indeed! Clever idea, great words.
The average lifespan of an american male is 78 and I just turned 79.me and death are both smiling listening to your song. Thanks
I just feel the same. Én is ugyanígy vagyok vele. Even Im "just" 58. O.o`
It surprises me every time I think of it, but I guess I have just a bit over a year left! Of course, there's no guarantee I'll last even that long.
Much love to you, RdC.
I'll have to quibble there. The life expectancy from birth includes all the infant/child mortality and young recklessness that you're past. The life expectancy at your age is about ten more years.
I'd give ya till about 86. Ya ain't dead yet, man! :)
Hey fella, im coming back here in a year and check in with you. Find out how you are doing,
See you then, have a great year
I've listened to so much crap in my 71 years, from so called artists with zero talent, it's a pleasure to have bumped into this video where a young lady musician has entertained me with a lovely voice and an original and well written song.
Good luck in the future girl, you deserve to go a long way.
There goes Reina making even death sound sweet. So talented. 👏👏👏
Wow, that’s a top shelf song. More people need to start paying attention to Reina.
I know but somehow “their” giving us Billie Eilish.
Yes Reina, this one should be heard. By multitudes.
Exactly what Jack said :)
For many death is a terrifying subject. But for some of us, including Reina, accepting our mortality gives us the ability to enjoy to the max the time that we do have. This is a beautiful and liberating song.
"When death smiles at you, all you have to do is smile back"
"Because I could not stop for Death
He kindly stopped for me..."
Lovely song!
Lyrics with the story telling skill of Tom Waites, the musical composition of Randy Newman and the folk feel of Dylan. Your talent is amazing.
Happy Sunday from London UK.
Yes amazing talent
Excellent summation tobortine
This is one of the craziest concepts i’ve ever heard and you just absolutely killed it
“Now, I will keep you company... while we drift toward immortality” I’m in awe! ❤️
*Eternity
A song to add to my funeral list..
If I must die, I will encounter darkness as a bride, and hug it in my arms. William Shakespeare. Thank you young lady for giving a few tears for a loss not quite 18 months ago.
Wow this is one of the most sensitive and smartest ideas/concepts I've ever seen... just so deep, creepy and beautiful at the same time... Thank you so much Reina!
Ystäviä RÅ
That's a solid platinum song. I'm not even kidding
I agree, this ranks up with some of the better Bob Dylan or Neil Young songs.
@@GrafStorm I concur
Seconded.
@@wascawywabbit0987 Second second!
Second,second,second.
just lost my uncle this morning. what a cosmic coincidence i stumbled on this song today. thanks for the smile
I'm getting old now, over 60, and feeling tired and aching and such, lacking energy too, health isn't what it used to be - and death has just been singing to me in the disguise of a young talented woman. I know it's you, death. I got the message.
I just turned 64 and I’m right there with you, looking forward to zooming thru the universe and at the same time never wanting to leave earth. Then I hear this song and everything is OK. Wow, and now I’m crying. I’m gonna listen again. 😢
They who probably have think-tanks with ears and eyes and who attempt looking ahead, at least a bit more times than never, they got the message. Yeah... The only trifle here, in a manner of speaking, that one may fancy at this point can be a capability to comprehend the message up to the hilt and try to live on as if no one got it right. For some more minutes, days, years and so on... Untill the "end", right? Cheers, folks beyong the Ocean! Why worry now? You dear North Americans sometimes seem to be a little bit too serious at things like listening to a nice song amazingly performed by a nice lady with such brilliant name of a Queen or a Ruler of Old, and containing a certain concept, even if it concerns such deep things like that one.... As they samurais say, things of great concern should be treated lightly...
@@user-fw4bk9kp2f I'm not North American, I'm European.
Beautifully sung and great lyrics. When you have faced the possibility of your own death due to illness or other events, this song becomes very poignant.
Could not agree more. Love to sing this to my cancer when I look in the mirror. God awaits.
Ah sweet youth. To sing "Death's Love song and then confidently say "See you next week."
Omgosh thats ironic
And to be able to reply. ; )
Wow! Now that’s profound 🤯
LOL...great observation!
I hope to see her next week. God willing
Brilliant of you to go “there”, where most songwriters fear to tread. Reminds me a little of how St Francis called it Sister Death at the end of his life; and Bob Dylan wrote “It’s doom alone that counts”. I had a serious brush with possible death myself at age 25 when a Greyhound bus flew off a cliff but luckily landed perfectly in the river below only because heavy rainstorms had just raised the water level high. We have to be ready at any age.
Only an artist can come up with a song like that.
"You never get out of this world alive" -- Hank Williams
The lovely Reina´s singing even in death song, like.
A great song about our journey, "oh death where is your sting'. Wow, I was moved to tears, you touched my heart with your music. Thanks. Another Sunday home run! Keep up the great work
That Was kinda dark but WONDERFUL...! Thank You.
This so very good. I want everyone to hear your music but I don’t want to give you to the masses. Stay wonderful.
How can I buy this?
Give her to the masses.
It shouldn't change her. 💜
But it will allow her to make a living.
I really like songs that start with good poetry and take a different perspective. No disappointment here.
Didn't expect to like this but this needs to be heard by a massive audience.
THIS song is absolutely beautiful and calming. I’d love for this to be played at my funeral.....in 45 years. So well done!❤️
Is that a stan rogers reference? I just want to see your smiling face 45 years from now?
@@jamesthomson8659 No, I just think a 100 is a nice round number to make it to. I’m 55 right now. LOL
... I've been dying to hear you write and perform that song ... :)
John Prine is in the great beyond smiling with pride at these words.
Don't bury me was a great song. I was in a band in the early 80s and the crowd loved that song every time we played it. Most of the time they didn't know about John so they thought it was our song. We did Prine songs hundreds of times and never paid him a dime, but that was only because we didn't have one to spare.
High praise. You're not wrong.
@@frankcoffey I don't think John would mind.
@@joes3984 I would hope John considered it free advertising. We created a small army of John Prine fans during those years by socializing his songs.
@@frankcoffey free advertisement is so valuable you can't even buy it.
now that's a cool song
Never thought of love that way. Thinking no one but you has either!
Your made it all the way through and not a single tear, that I could see. Very nice poetry.
I absolutely love this well written song that you have executed perfectly with your amazing voice!!!!! I really enjoyed this beautiful song!!!!!!!
Wow. I felt the lyrics, especially the intro, were profound. You gave death a new soft and warm side. You know, everybody wants to go to heaven but nobody wants to go now. I didn't expect such a deep song. Happy Sunday from up-state New York.
I wanted to hear this song again as I was falling asleep tonight. It’s a great song! Perfect blend of everything. It is quickly growing as a favorite overall song of mine. Oh, time to play it again. Thank you for sharing your talents.
One good song, good singing, picking, and production to match.
Creativity and talent are shining bright today... Nice!!
I look outside the window.. still snowing here... end of March.. perfect song for it😊 greetings from Austria!
I like this song from the first chords. Thank You Reina.
This mix, including a beautifully understated bass is just wonderful and fits the song perfectly.
You are a great singer/ songwriter and musician Reina!
None of us know the time we will take our last breath and slip our hands quietly into that of death's. A beautiful and prophetic song. Thank you for sharing.
You’re really a great wordsmith, a very clever song.
Brilliant Reina!
Poet and troubadour! Dark song, yet cheerful!
Well done! Never heard death done this way...but it's philosophically inspiring. Nicely presented by Reina in what appears to be her new studio. Three cheers from Fargo.
This is a really fascinating song. Absolutely awesome, both the melody, the rithm and the concepts of the poetry. And of course your rendition is excellent. Thank you
You are an amazing talent Reina, not many song writers today can do what you do so well. Your voice is so good.... thank You!
Wonderful songwriting as always!
Beautiful Poetry set to Beautiful Music.Very well done,I'll listen to this many times in the future.
Beautiful song. The RDC originals are my favourites...no matter how many great covers you share. Top notch poetry. Thank you.
Prestation impeccable, enregistrement de qualité, voix et guitare bien équilibrées.
Thank you Reina. Eternity is here we are guests in this earth .Maybe there's a life after life .Awesome. 🕊🌻🌠🎆
I am not afraid of death, I just don't want to be there when it happens. - Woody Allen
One of my favorite quotes 👍🏻
This is the most beautiful song yet.
That was truly fabulous !! That lover I keep running from (or rather “from whom I keep running). Thank you !!
Good song. We all march toward the end. However, don't waste time. Solid performance.
REMARKABLE! “Mmmm, mmmmmmm-ooooo,oooooo, ooooooo” PURE SOUL - THANK YOU! I neverrrr get sick of listening to this ! Your vocal tone and depth of feeling - lyrics, melody/ harmony! Award winning!🥇🏆very powerful! A favorite song of all time for me! 🕊🕊
Listening at 4 in the morning, and it sounds and feels so right. Loving your work, Reina.
Sweet and spooky. I guess I'm not ready to fall in love.
Beautifully written about what we all must face personally and for all those we love. Without death there isn’t life. But death will never be the end. Thank you for your music, music makes life and death better.
Just when you think you’ve heard some of Reina’s best work she comes up with this! So excellent.
Took me there; Bravo!!!
I love it ! Love how you always manage to make cheerful songs out of the darkest subjects. Also the reference to Dylan Thomas poem will always remind me of Interstellar, my favorite movie !
As soon as I say the title, I knew Reina wrote it.
I'm nearing my 85th birthday. I like to claim that I am your oldest fan. This is a great poem and your voice touches the heart. Thanks for the Sunday programs.
Your originals are the best Sunday surprises! Just so beautiful!
Very nice! Gave me "missing John Prine" goose bumps.......
Life continues, death is the escort to our destiny
Now we know what happened to Bernadette! Love it. Just the right amount of creepy with the right lack of soppiness.
I wanna die in my sleep like my grampa. Not screaming and yelling like the peaple riding in his car. Very good song
Good one 😂😂🙀✌️
That is HILARIOUS
laughing!
I see what you did there
I like cheeky songs, pretty awesome Reina☮️❤️
Thank you for this touching song, dear Reina! Stay safe!
Oh, my. That was different 😬 So sweet and creepy at the same time 😁 You are an enigma, a very talented and likable one.💜
This song is a masterful craft!!!! I get chills with the strumming of the first chords! How inspiring to see another songwriter just pouring it all out and so deeply. You really are the real deal Holyfield!
Hope you can get it picked up by a label.
This is a deep song.
I don't know if you will ever read this but thank you so much for writing such a beautiful love song from / to Death.
Happy Sunday Morning Sunshine. Be well, be safe, peace. 🌞
I don't know about you guys...but she is killing me soooo softly:) Thank you Reina del Cid!
I needed to hear this. I just lost my wife to cancer a few weeks ago. I think it was meant for me to find this song now. Thank you.
Lovely little song there Reina. I know it’s about dying but it’s still a sweet piece. Thank you for another one babe.
😊😊😊
We all get to go. Beautiful!!!!
Reina, what a song! GREAT WORK! from a beautiful woman with so much soul!
Deaths Love Song - have a good weekend! Lol
Awesome song- always loved you originals
Reina is an amazing songwriter. All reading and knowledge makes songs like this so interesting
Awesome! Sounds like a great song to be part of a movie soundtrack. Thanks!😎✌️🌞🎸
you make it look easy
Death is a persistent suitor who will one day show up in a black limousine, open the back door, blithely smile and say, "Your ride's here".
I love her lyrics and all the layers you can hear going on, everything is pieced together so brilliantly well. As an amateur musician I can only dream to write lyrics as brutal as those from Common man or as touching as these. If you never paid attention to them, please do, you'll love it.
So, now, in my head there is a music video of this song being sung by the Death character in Neil Gaimen's Sandman graphic novels as a duet with the Death character from Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. And I'm smiling with a tear in my eye.
Happy Sunday Reina!!! Congratulations from Argentina 🇦🇷 🇦🇷 🇦🇷 !!!!
Amazing, powerful and emotional, The best song you have written so far in your young life. If reviewing songs, Siskel and Ebert would have given it 👍👍
Another "home run" from Reina del Cid! ❤️
You are so Brave
Romanticizing DEATH
So original, i like it
Bravo, Bravo, the Real awakening & enlightenment comes not from our minuscule time on Earth, but rather what lies beyond this momentary physical experience. Enjoy and fulfill your life here to the fullest, yes, but also embrace Death not as something to be feared, but rather as a welcoming Angel whose been sent to guide you through the transition from the restrictive limitations of this earthly experience, to an unimaginable transformation of pure Love and Energy. Your song is spot on Reina de Cid, spot on. Thank you sweetie.
I am subscribed and have my notification bell on.....but youtube rarely puts you're channel in my feed. Im glad they did this morning. Im a huge fan, you are so talented! 😁
I’ve listened to the song a few times now. I love that song. That’s a really great song, Reina
A so young and sweet woman and this deep and serious song... Thanks from France.!!
