I remember tuning in to the Oscars that night just to see Lady Gaga’s tribute to the Sound of Music and was stunned by her performance. I was afraid she would do something crazy, but it was magnificent!

I never tire of seeing and hearing Gaga sing this medley. She was just incredible. I saw Gaga at the then Nokia Theatre in Downtown LA when "Bad Romance" was at its zenith. A video I've viewed countless times. As to "The Sound of Music," I "met" Maria von Trapp in the late 50s and then shook hands and spoke with Julie Andrews some 50 years later. Encounters I will never forget.

Gaga is a classically trained operatic vocalist and it shows here. Second, she studied Julie Andrews and her pitch for many weeks in order to make this as authentic as possible, which is also very difficult to do. She nailed this.
Also, if you watch from the very beginning, you'll hear a few gasps from the audience when Gaga is introduced.

Gaga is a full lyric (dark) mezzo soprano, with a strong, emotive and theatrical voice. Her range - which is fully connected - is 3.3 octaves (F#2 - G5 - C6 (E7)). That F#2 is a baritone note, and the G5 is her highest belted note. As for mixed/head voice C6 is soprano high C. The G7 is her highest exclamation (live).

For real? Nice! I don't know a whole lot about music's technical side but I always heard people saying that Lady Gaga was like a 2.7 octaves or whatever.

Rob - I'm late to this party, but better late than never! As has been said previously, Lady Gaga SLAYED this tribute, and totally won me over! What you might not know is that she sang the title song in Julie's original key!!! I have a VERY difficult, hard-to-pass "chills" test, and, yep, the Lady gave me chills - more than once! And THEN when Julie came out!?!?! Oh........My.......GAH!!! I didn't "dab" a tear, I soaked TWO tissues!!!!! Loved your reaction to this! For me, this was the highest high-point of any awards show in memory!

Lady Gaga surprised me when she open her mouth to do this lovely and memorable medley from the Sound of Music - its a classic musical album and she did it with poise and class. Its worth the standing ovation from the audience, the respect and admiration from Julie Andrews and your teary reaction seeing those two embrace. Its a once in a lifetime moment here to see such a performance, Im glad!

This was one of the movies as a kid that I watched just over and over on. Repeat multiple multiple times a year. Probably 20-30 times a year along with gone with the wind and wizard of Oz. I would dare hate to see the amount of percentage of my life that was spent just on these three movies but being a Lady Gaga fan too now watching this brought me so ful circle and it was so beautiful
Many of the top singers you hear (Lady Gaga, David from Disturbed, etc) have had classical singing training which allows them such flow and wide range of vocal pitch. And you good sir, I love your reactions. I love your emotions. Never hide them away.

To me Gaga always sang so good. So for her fans this wasn't a suprise. The woman writes all of her own songs and sings live every single show even with dancing. In my opinion She raised the bar for the music industry. After she came out and got famous all the other pop stars got more extravagant. She's honestly the best In her genre for me. I would assume like most people in the audience and watching the video for the first time, I thought "What's up with Lady Gaga singing on the Oscars, let alone The Sound Of Music?" Then she started and I was agog with wonderment. Just can not get over her voice. She looked good, wish she didn't have the tattoo, but it is what it is. She looked wonderful when she won her Golden Globe (I think that is what she won) also. I am not a big fan of hers, but she has my utmost respect now.

+Rob Reactor. I have a - friendly! - suggestion. As it's a reaction video, I think you need to let viewers know what you're thinking (of the performance, in this case) as it goes along. When you first saw her, when she started singing, hit big notes, etc. I obviously don't mean you should talk over it, or throughout - just a little more than four words at the end. : )
