thank you guys for all the love!! as a bit of a heads up, we stopped editing our recordings after this video so the rest of our reactions are unfiltered :)
Cocaine addiction. The crescendo in the middle is like a cocaine high, coming down and repeating. That's what makes this one of the all time greats. So many levels!
The one line "chop your breakfast on a mirror" is the only reference to coke. James Hetfield said that he was inspired to make the song after witnessing a bunch of people strung out on heroine outside his show
I wonder where,I was at some of those early shows in the early 80's on the west coast.Saw Tweekers, and the odd bad acid trip but no strung out junkies. It was probably an incident that really affected him. We all figured it was about Cocaine back then too as Coke was everywhere in those days. I guess if you heard it from James...
The usual next steps for people new to Metallica would be their 80s classics like "One", "Fade to Black", and "Blackened". Almost anything from their 80s catalog is golden. Still, I'd say go with "One" first, but don't use the music video which incorporates film footage so you can't really hear all the (gorgeous) melodies going on in the background.
I'd have to disagree. The music video gives context to what the song is about. Otherwise it may be hard to determine of you don't have the lyrics in front you.
Faruk Ahmet It still feels more cinematic with the video to give visuals. Plus, not everyone I've seem react to the lyrics had understood anything apart from it being about war and a wounded soldier when it's much worse than that. The video does a better job at explaining. Its the same with things like Pink Floyd's The Wall where the visuals help you understand much clearer.
It's about drugs-addiction ('Needlework' 'Chop your breakfast on a mirror' etc). The first two verses and chorus are the drug speaking. With the instrumental break, the addict comes in. It starts very relaxed, because he/she just had his/her 'shot'. This slowly changes and becomes more hectic, because the next shot is needed. That's when the addict shouts out he/she only hears 'laughing at my cries'. Then the drugs take over again till then end, which ends in satanic laughs, because the drugs win.
The song is about drug addiction, with the calm being off the drugs, slowly building up again as the addiction starts calling you back. That "Oasis in the desert" is unintentionally a really good metaphor for this
Hi Guys. Very good reaction. My self and a lot of Metallica fans I know, don´t like when you skip this kind of a song. Pausing and talking is not a problem at all, but the skipping is very annoying. Because some of the parts are very special and epic. But, it´s your channel and you do it the way you like it. That was the only negativ for me. Loved it!
As long as you listened to the whole thing yourself and only edited the video after, it's not to bad. I prefer to see the people reacting to the whole thing of course, but as long as you don't literally skip ahead and miss parts of the song it's not too bad IMO.
I totally agree. I loved your reaction guys. Pause and discuss if you like, but cutting it up destroys the continuity for those that may be watching this having never heard the song before. I am sure you heard the song in its entirety and enjoyed the journey that it took you on, editing it down hinders your viewers the ability to do the same. When it comes to good metal music, there is no filler material, it all has meaning. I loved your insights into the music and very much enjoyed how you recognized the music it self can tell the story. Keep it up fellas.
Hey you guys! Liked and subscribed. Thanks for taking the risk on a metal song. I will explain what this is about. It is about the horrors of drug addiction. The Master of Puppets is the drug. In the beginning, when it's heavy, the addict is looking for more of the drug. In the soft, mellow part where it's very peaceful, that's from the perspective of the addict. The addict has found the drug and is on the high. Then it ramps up again, because the drug has worn off, that's why you get the addict asking, "Master! Master! Where's the dreams that I've been after? Promised only lies." That's when it gets heavy again because the addict is looking for another fix. It's a very deep song! My recommendation would be to check out the Biggie to Metallica's 2PAC and that is Megadeth. Big time feud between the two bands. Try Megadeth's song "Holy Wars... The Punishment Due."
I don't know if they edit their recordings or not, but there a number of skips throughout the recording where lines of lyrics and such are cut out, which screws with understanding the song.
This is a masterpiece guys. Missed lots of stuff. Was early for you to start with this one. Cause you were off guard with the heavyness language yet. Hope you listened it more and got into more.
You should put the lyrics up for future. Most suggestions are not just random songs they are usually songs that are considered great by the fans. This song has real deep dark lyrics about drug addiction and had you had the lyrics up you would have got what it was about. Genius writing. Apart from that it is a great song just to listen to for pure musical e tertainment
"Chop your breakfast on a mirror". Very simple line but tells a lot about the song and what he's talking about. I want to say most of the guys in Metallica have dealt with addiction from time to time and their music reflects the demons they went through to get past that addiction. Why I find this a brilliantly constructed song is to me, that middle part represents someone injecting, snorting, drinking, etc and going though the joy of the high. The reason why it sounded like an oasis in the middle section is because that high is an oasis to an addict. Very quickly, they come down from that high in the song and it becomes chaotic again.
Great reaction guys! :) Welcome to the world of metal ;) I hope you will react to many more rock/metal songs, you will discover SO much good music! Subscribed :)
Amazing that you picked up so quickly on how metal/rock uses the music to help tell the story. This song is about the perils of drug addiction and how the drugs become the master. The heavier music conveys the struggle with the addiction and cravings , and the mellow part in the middle is the temporary relief of the "high" , which goes away and turns into a battle again. I highly recommend "Fade To Black". You'll hear the tone of the music again help tell the story of the battle with depression and suicidal thoughts.
If you guys liked master of puppets you should definitely listen to One by Metallica. A lot of “metal fans” say it’s not real metal but in my opinion it’s one Metallica’s best songs
It's also because you want people to see learn about different kinds of music. It amazes me how there is so much that people have not listen to except their own genres.
Metallica is a band that writes music about classic books, history, religion, philosophy. maybe it's why they still tour. the song is about drugs (cocaine) and how it destroys lives
Watch heir live performance either in Seattle in 1989, or Moscow in front of a million fans and you will see some of the greatest to be in this genre. Sadly on the tour for Master of Puppets in 1986 the tour bus had an accident and their original bassist was killed. He was only 24 yrs old and had written some amazing stuff Check out Anesthesia (pulling teeth) live but MAKE SURE you see the Cliff Burton performance and see how effortlessly he played. Master was their 3rd studio album, I cant imagine being 24 and already accomplishing 3 studio albums. It is easy to see why they still today are one of the best
I highly recommend "To Live is to Die" by Metallica. It is an instrumental about their bassist who was crushed by a bus in '86 and the song uses his unrecorded writings of riffs and melodies.
Unfortunately you were talking over the line "chop your breakfast on a mirror", which is the most obvious clue in the lyrics, that the song is about addiction. I liked this reaction a lot, cus it seemed like you were genuinely listening and analysing every bit of the song.
its a song about drug addiction. . . the user becoming a puppet to the drug but the major difference to other drug toons is its sung from the perspective of the master
I really hope you guys will listen to more metal on your channel, there's a whole universe of amazing metal music out there that you guys can't even fathom! I highly suggest the band TOOL, the song Vicarious is a good one to start out to. Great video guys! :)
if you're going down the metal rabbit hole do a little research ahead of time on the songs and the bands. there are so many different styles and sub genres within metal and rock music that it can be a minefield and a dense world to get into. like jazz it can all be traced back to a few artists who created the templates but like jazz it exploded in a thousand different directions, some subtle some dramatic as some chose noise over melody or speed over rhythm. I've been a metalhead for 30 years and it can still surprise me :) good luck, stay the course and no matter how many people suggest Slayer - Reign in Blood or Meshuggah - Bleed, pace yourself and work your way up to them! :D
The song is about how drugs over take over your life. The mellow guitar section is when you're high. The lyric "Chop your breakfast on a mirror" gives it away.
MetallicA are one of the most complex and ingenious bands in the world, they transcend music, might be good to do lyric videos so you can get a better sense of the song and it’s meaning. Could you do MetallicA- Enter Sandman next please. Really enjoyed the video.
If you react to metal they will come. Welcome to heavy metal guys. If you continue to explore our little corner of the musical world I think you will be really surprised at what you’ll find.
This is one of their harder songs, especially the main lick... I don't know why people suggest this song for peoples first Metallica experience. It really shouldn't be.
"Got em" Both went to the metal head bob. lol The song is about drugs and its control on you. "Chop your breakfast on a mirror!" The change up is when someone got the fix. Then you go to feeling amped up. Metallica puts emotion into music the songs are extras lol. Try to pause the video instead of skips. That way we can see what the try reaction is. Old vet loving this USAF 1984-1987 Salute 07
If you want to be proven right on your assumption that this sounds awesome live look up the Seattle 1989 version. Make sure your seat is in the upright position and your belt is fastened before you do though.
how about some Black Sabbath? They invented metal, and they're from Birmingham. Try "children of the grave" or "war pigs" or their self titled "Black Sabbath" to hear for yourself the very moment metal music was created!
It's interesting that although you missed a lot of the lyrics and didn't understand the meaning on first listen, you still got it in a way through the instrumentation. Like at the point in the middle that represents the drug being taken, you said it was like "you found an oasis", "it's peaceful" then when it builds back up, representing the feeling that the drug wasn't enough, you were saying "I'm ready for more". Song's a masterpiece.
I would suggest next for you, Metallica - One or Fade To Black. Good video guys. The song Master of Puppets is about being addicted to drugs. The verse "chop your breakfast on a mirror" is a reference to cutting up cocaine into lines. The song tells of the dangers getting hooked on drugs.
Loved the reaction, and welcome to the Metallifamily! People have given some great suggestions already, but their career spans 37 years (so far) and has a deep catalog(ue) with a lot of variety. So here are my top suggestions from various categories, so go with what you prefer: - Straight-up epics: Fade to Black, One, (Master of Puppets goes here) - Thrash: Fight Fire With Fire, Blackened, Battery - Mid-tempo thumpers: For Whom the Bell Tolls, Harvester of Sorrow - Instrumentals: To Live is to Die, Orion - Ballads: The Unforgiven 3, Nothing Else Matters - From their radio-friendly era: Enter Sandman, Fuel - Best of their newest (2016): Spit Out the Bone, Halo on Fire
you guys should react to more british metal as they are the ones who pioneered the genre. Try out some iron Maiden or the godfathers themselves Black Sabbath
Blind Guardian - Mirror mirror Avantasia - Reach out for the light Theocracy - Hide in the fairy tale Kamelot - The Haunting ft Simone Simons Helloween - Straight out of hell Demon Hunter - not ready to die
The song is about drug addiction and how the addict eventually gets controlled by the drug, instead of the other way around. It's their most played song live, having played it 1.585 times. As the biggest fan of Metallica, this is one of the best song in existence, in my opinion.
I hope you guys listened to this again after learning the meaning of the lyrics. You'd have a different experience with the song. The lyrics are quite clever.
It's about drug addiction and how drugs will be the Master of you. In the beginning he's on a high, the middle section is him coming down from the high. The first part is the drugs talking, the middle part is the addict talking and the builds up cause the drugs are taking him over again.
Coming from a rap background I think you might find the song In Memory Of by Soulfly pretty interesting. Soulfly is a band created by Max Cavalera the former singer of metal greats Sepultura from Brazil. The song features Cavalera and multiple rap artists on vocals and for me is the perfect collaboration of rap and metal.
this song gives a message about the system of a country that controls other countries to overcome the crisis. is a capitalist system of world monopoly (Imperialism), resulting in a global crisis and a crisis that develops acutely in a country under his control. very progressive song
This song is about drug addiction controlling your life. The drugs are the Master of you the puppet. Please react to Metallica's Orion, Fade to Black and One. Good reactions guys. Keep it up exploring rock and metal and Metallica
Check out “One” “Fade to Black” or “The Four Horsemen” next. Puppets is about drug addiction, and is lyrically presented from the perspective of the drug (except for one part before the solo). Nice reaction lads!
Some great metal acts to start you off: Metallica Megadeth Black Sabbath (different eras by singer: Ozzy, Dio, Hughes, Martin, Gillan) Ozzy Osbourne (Original singer of Black Sabbath, has a long, long solo career) Iommi (guitarist of Black Sabbath, has a few great solo albums) Anthrax Iron Maiden Dio Rainbow Gojira Sepultura Judas Priest Slayer Nile Black Label Society Pantera Warbringer Candlemass Ghost Mezarkabul (in English: Pentagram) Rammstein Volbeat Iced Earth Slipknot Lamb Of God ManOwaR GWAR (should only be watched either live or with music video, they are more performance artists than anything) [Metal adjacent music worth checking out:] Tool Marilyn Manson Deep Purple etc. gotta go work calls.
Ohh, Metallica is my childhood xD This song is so iconic, the instrumental is insane. But my favorite song of them is Fuel, listen to it if you haven't already ;) Great video, I like listening to your comments in the end.
In one way u can apply it for any type of addiction. C, H, Alcohol 🍸even gambling!! Addiction is such a strong 💪overpowering symptom , that i personally know a person who bet his home with everything in it. Including his wife. And he LOST.
It’s about drug addiction.. the drug is your master. The liar that promises one thing and you lose everything. The slow down is the euphoria. The ramp up is withdraw.. master.. master.. where’s the dreams I’ve been after. Chop your breakfast on a mirror.
It's about drug addiction. Read the lyrics deeper. Taste me you will see More is all you need. Needlework the way, never you betray Chop your breakfast on a mirror Taste me you will see
The song is about cocaine, and the master is the drug and it’s pulling the users strings(the user is the puppet) and there is a line that says “chop your breakfast on a mirror”
thank you guys for all the love!! as a bit of a heads up, we stopped editing our recordings after this video so the rest of our reactions are unfiltered :)
guys listen with lyrics ;D
You totslly destroyed this with the esiting...
Cocaine addiction. The crescendo in the middle is like a cocaine high, coming down and repeating. That's what makes this one of the all time greats. So many levels!
mad!
It's actually just about all drugs, but primarily heroine
Nope cocaine, trust me . It could be extended to all drugs but the song was written about cocaine
The one line "chop your breakfast on a mirror" is the only reference to coke. James Hetfield said that he was inspired to make the song after witnessing a bunch of people strung out on heroine outside his show

The Black Queen Then have the lyrics in front of you? They're free to look at, _and_ you get to actually hear the music too. Win-win.

the first three albums were my favorite, but the $5.98 ep garage days was awesome as well and the cover songs whisky in the jar and turn the page
It's about drugs-addiction ('Needlework' 'Chop your breakfast on a mirror' etc). The first two verses and chorus are the drug speaking. With the instrumental break, the addict comes in. Lasse Iversen - They have to skip. RUclips is getting more strict on reaction videos. You just gotta deal with it. (Yeah, it sucks)
"It's kind of dark"... Indeed it is, drug addiction is no joke.

Metallica - Sad but true
I'll never understand why these reaction videos are so popular. I guess it's because it actually takes work to create something of your own.
It's also because you want people to see learn about different kinds of music. It amazes me how there is so much that people have not listen to except their own genres.

will do :)
This song was so difficult to learn on guitar for me! But I'm not very good at playing guitar... In the end I learnt Sandman 😂
If you want to be proven right on your assumption that this sounds awesome live look up the Seattle 1989 version. Make sure your seat is in the upright position and your belt is fastened before you do though.
The song is about drug addiction and how it ruins your life. A cool fact is that the tempo of the song copies the high and then low of being high.
very cool
Im gonna start recommending this to all "REACTION" videos: LISTEN TO THE WHOLE SONG FIRST,THEN REACT?
Metallica are some of the best musicians ever...I wish that more bands nowadays actually played instruments
I'm surprised the 'breakfast on a plate' line doesn't tip off more people.
Notice on the cover artwork that the hands control strings going to military headstones.....
Just a tidbit to ponder.
I really like your oasis comparison! Keep up the great work guys!!

Drug addiction
Master- drugs,alcoholic
Puppets- the user

Seriously during the solo your talking about the art work
More Metallica!
Addiction drugs - master of puppets
:)
You guys would love the band Rush. They aren’t metal, but they’re the greatest band ever.
It's about drug addiction and how drugs will be the Master of you. In the beginning he's on a high, the middle section is him coming down from the high. The first part is the drugs talking, the middle part is the addict talking and the builds up cause the drugs are taking him over again.
Listen to their first 5 albums, they are all great and youll love every song
Its about drug addiction. The words in the beginning "Chop Your Breakfast On A Mirror".
Caught Somewhere in Time by Iron Maiden 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Coming from a rap background I think you might find the song In Memory Of by Soulfly pretty interesting.
Soulfly is a band created by Max Cavalera the former singer of metal greats Sepultura from Brazil.
The song features Cavalera and multiple rap artists on vocals and for me is the perfect collaboration of rap and metal.
