This was shown on OGWT in 1978. I'm guessing it was filmed in 1972 as I can't see or hear Michael McDonald, who toured with them on the 73 & 74 tours. Thanks
They made records of rare perfection. It was almost unreasonable to ask the world’s greatest recording outfit to make live appearances and achieve anything out of the ordinary. They do a very good job and are all off-the-scale brilliant musicians, but they were and remain, principally a recording, rather than a live act IMO.
I could only dream of watching the unedited studio master tapes of these early live performances. Very little early Steely Dan live performance video footage exists, and this is great to see, but their jam was probably at least another minute, minute and a half longer... It’s a shame it was edited...
Ahh, Steely Dan, I remember them well. Working at the garden mart after school, spending a lot of time out back around the shrubs smoking, uh, er, just smoking.
The Old Grey Whistle Test website shows this was aired as a film on July 11, 1978. David Palmer was still singing with the band when they performed live on NBC's The Midnight Special in January 1973, so this could be any time from late 1972 to early 1973.
With David Palmer? Almost certainly 72 BTW love David's kinetic style. Very Roger Chapman, Peter Gabriel, etc. although at this point in time at this part of the world, likely coincidence.
Everyone’s got that beautiful early-to-mid-70s coke-hair sweats goin’ on, and I love it. Joking aside this band is so great. More live uploads (and yeah this is def from like 73-76 not ‘78). Much love
This isn't in 1978. Early stuff from 72/73 before they broke up this incarnation. F&B then employed some of the ex members as session men. Shame about the fade out because Baxter played this shit out of this version.

There must be the whole concert collecting dust somewhere. I'm hoping someone has it and will upload it one day. I uploaded this as there isn't much film of early Dan out there. I hope YT doesn't take this down.
Much appreciation for this posting. It's just baffling why seemingly no one was filming this band in concert or in the studio in 1973-74 when they toured across the whole U.S. We can watch hours of The Eagles and The Doobie Brothers from that period, but next to nothing from Steely Dan.@@khaz606
Definitely more likely 73 as the record was released in 72 but 72 73 is surely the closest guess. Too bad it fades out just as Baxter is tearing it up.
Aside from the great lyrics, the guitar lead and fills are what made this so iconic - where are they? The lead guitarist playing here sounds like my lame garage band in 1976!
I saw Skunk live with Steely Dan in April 1974 and The Doobie Brothers in April 1977. His talent on acoustic, electric and pedal steel guitar is unmatched. For sheer listening pleasure just listen to his playing on 1973's "My Old School." It still sounds years ahead of its time.

You'll never find musicians or artists like this on any of those talent shows
Nimal De Silva nor anywhere else they were unique full stop . No more never again this is it mate .
Way different days gone passed.
This could count as both one of the worst Steely clips ever and one of the best live music clips ever
or anywhere else

hand rolled doobies?
that triple bend at 2:22 is incredible, im totally stealing that for every single guitar solo
me too. been steeling it all these years
Had to be 1972-73. The original lineup was long disbanded by 1978.

they also totally stopped touring by 1974 didn't they?

Love that Skunk!
David Palmer on tambourine and vocals.

Amazing
It's almost like Denny Dias and Skunk Baxter flipped roles from what they did for "Midnight Special."
Just legendary
Walter was cool from birth.
Great Walter Becker!!!!
Denny Diaz on lead guitar.
There wasn't a better band before or since.
Edward Sholar I,m a HUGE BEATLES FAN I,m from Liverpool UK but I feel guilty , why ? Because your correct this is it it don’t get any better than this
fact
It was in 72 you can tell by Becker's hair😂 he had shorter hair in the early 70s and didn't start growing it out till late 70s!
Baylie M Of course he had it cut against his will lol
Didn't he have it cut against his will at college during that bust? Lol
The best.

Pun2404 72-73 you mean. They didn’t tour from near the end of 74 to 93

Palmer left the band around April or May 1973
David "why am I even HERE??" Palmer.
To sing "Brooklyn Owes the Charmer Under Me"?

Why don’t you like them🧐
Real musicians. You can tell because they’re really fucking ugly and still successful.
