  • During the DS generation Nintendo released a system that would improve the hardware as well as software. The DSi is regarded as just another DS iteration, but today I'm talking about why it's not only a Pro model, but could also be considered a new generation.

I've got SO MUCH love for my Matte Black DSi. It was the system that got me through my senior year of high school and my first couple years of college. I experienced Heart Gold and TWEWY on this system, two of my favorite games of all time, and fell in love with DSiWare games like Puzzle League Express and Pictobits (both of which I still play relatively frequently)! The form factor is still a favorite of mine and highlighted the best of the late 00's for Nintendo hardware. Cool to see a video on it today!

Whenever a console producer like nintendo or sony removes a feature in a hardware revision, it's usually because that feature was a security compromise
Specifically for the DS; the GBA port was an early way for NDS flashcarts to bypass the encryption of slot-1. But there are other examples from different systems such as the Wii removing Gamecube functionality, the PS3 removing Linux, and most recently the Switch changing the way recovery mode is accessed (although that last one semi-fortunately just affected hackers)

The "i" had many reasons, but one of them was also that the next generation handheld project from Nintendo was codenamed Project Iris, which was supposed to have multimedia options and just one screen, a successor to the GBA which would've been more like a PSP. They scrapped that and made the DS due to time and market constraints and a lot of those ideas ended up on the DSi. DSi XL owners: Does your console have dual IPS panels? My DSi XL has dual IPS while my DSi has dual TN, wondering if this is consistent across the board or if it's more of a n3DS XL situation.

Regarding the name, I always assumed the i in the DSi just stood for "internet" because it was the first one to have an online storefront. The other explanations makes sense too, it's possible the name hit a cross section of possible meanings so it stuck.

No-one ever called a Nintendo DS a “DS2” the 3DS was just a light adjusting function given console, the right sided slider wouldn’t have control of turning games on into more 3 dimensional modes, they basically made the 3DS have a double shaders eclipsing together kind of scheme made for its trigger.
You can design an 8 bit game for use only on computers, you can make their animations be almost full 3D turns, making it be what’s called “2.5D” but then there’s spinning around the camera functions while seeing also that your character whenever it moves anywhere, will have the camera move with wherever they’re redirection their attention.
Minecraft is basically a fully 3D computer game with a first person mode, a game called RuneScape that I play places you in the center of the screen with a “mini-map” which is used for traveling to further points of the game since you cannot click the skybox in most games to go as far as a skyboxes placement in any game is.

the problem with dsi in present day is that with the original ds and dsl having a gba slot and the 3ds being compatible with way more games, the dsi is stuck in this limbo of not actually having any point to it as the dsl can play ds and gba games, where the 3ds can play 3ds, ds and dsiware games, and the dsi only does ds and dsiware. I suppose there is the advantage it has over the ds is being able to run a cfw without an r4 card. But the 3ds does it too.

The Game Boy Color is the same generation as the Game Boy just as the Nintendo DSi is the same generation as the Nintendo DS. The Game Boy Color/Nintendo DSi are iterations of the original hardware with added functionality and a bit more technical capabilities. They were hardly next gen handhelds to their counterparts.
The Sony PlayStation 4 Pro is still in the same generation as the Sony PlayStation 4. Again, just an interaction of the PS4. Not sure where the confusion lies.

The Gameboy Color definitely is a new generation of handhelds over the original gameboy. It has 8 bit graphics where the original gameboy doesn't and also allowed for better sound to come from the system.
The DSi however, stil ran all the games the DS could. It might have been more powerful but really almost all cartridge games ran on both systems.
I'd say the DSi would be a x.5 generation by that logic.

I think if you consider the GBC to be a new generation, you have to consider the New 3DS to be one as well. Which nobody does. Granted the GBC did have a substantial library of exclusives. As for the DSi, it was a nice upgrade. I had a DS Lite I bought used late in its run. But I think to this day the DS is my least favourite Nintendo handheld. Too much focus on gimmicks and casuals. The bite sized downloadable games the DSi brought was neat, but the PSP had that too, as well as full games.

2:53 You’re kinda wrong about the DSi XL. The XL keeps the native resolution of the ds games with a better IPS panel. The “stretching” problem you’re talking about occurs on the 3DS XL... Which upscaled the ds screen and made games look objectively worse (low res), not the DSi XL.
I guess it could be more blocky for some… But IMO owning DS Lite, DSi, DSi XL, and 3DS… I can say that the DSi XL has a far superior viewing experience compared to the other systems.
DS Lite is for people that want good ds viewing w/gba compatibility… But if you’re looking for the BEST DS viewing experience: DSi XL is takes the cake w/better OS, hardware, and modding tools as a bonus.

Despite the Gameboy Color coming out with multiple exclusive games over the original Gameboy, I still can only see it as a "Pro" or new iteration of the Gameboy. Just the same as the Gameboy Lite or the Gameboy Pocket. The fact is Nintendo isn't a stranger to having exclusive games come to different iterations of the same platform. We saw it with the DS to DSi and the 3DS to the New 3DS. Considering their track record, if Nintendo were to come out with some Switch 4K, I wouldn't put it past them to have exclusive games on that iteration either.
