They have interesting male and female color patterns. I prefer to keep cichlids like this in groups so you can see their natural behavior including development of color patterns.

Trying to picture you as a kid learning about fish keeping in a drinking trough 😊

Thank you. I had my first big fish disaster in that water trough. We ran our cattle through a dipping vat full of pesticides to control cattle flies, ticks, and lice. We didn't think to prevent the cattle going to the trough to drink. There was enough pesticide on their snouts to kill all my fish. As someone once told me, "If you raise livestock, you sometimes kill livestock."

Hey. Great to see you again. Very beautiful fish. Maybe someday I will do bigger fish as those. But need stronger floors first. 😊 Keep up you good work and keep teaching us. 👍

Okay. I've heard excuses for not having more tanks that could have been easily solved by removing sofas and beds and stuff, but I can understand the problem of not having strong enough floors.

Hello. Bought seven Phossochromis tails two years ago, about an inch in size. Raised and got the first offspring, then lost interest in this fish. Thanks to your video👍 revised my opinion about this fish. I want to keep it in my aquarium! So far 30, two inches in size and their mother (three years old). Tell me how to save the population (it is not possible to buy on the side and update the blood)?

    • @goliadfarms7029

We use inbreeding to improve our strains. Inbreeding has a bad rap, but it is useful for eliminating deleterious genes (technically alleles) and concentrating beneficial characteristics. I wouldn't hesitate to try brother/sister matings until you can acquire other stock for outcrossing. Keep in mind that most of the fish in the hobby originated from small groups, so most are already inbred. Of interest is that the Xiphophorus Genetic Stock Center has a line of Xiphophorus maculatus that has been brother/sister mated for over 140 generations. These fish are healthy any without any genetic issues.

I feel that people misunderstand inbreeding, its been an important part of the history of all species since its part of what makes a species. A huge part of speciation is through genetic bottlenecks in the form of inbreeding and in many cases hybridization between two closely related species. Though the term "species" is harder to apply to some animals than others, with most mammals its not especially hard, but I know that it can be hard to tell with many insects for example, I'm pretty sure cichlids are also a case where it can be hard to tell what a "species" is exactly since the lines can blur very easily.

Speciation in cichlids, especially African Rift Lake cichlids, is rapid and complex due to hybridization. I've seen an estimate that a new species arises every 47 (could be 27, I can't remember) years in Lake Malawi.

@@goliadfarms7029 That's extremely interesting, speciation can happen quite fast. I'm not sure the specifics but apparently a population of mosquitos was isolated in the London underground which caused them to become radically different from their surface relatives. I believe one of the major differences was the surface variety preferred birds whereas the subterranean variety were fond of mammals such as rats. I dont believe they are considered different species, but its still serves the point. Dont quote me on anything though.

Definitely not a species that is commonly kept. Full grown males are stunning in size and color. If I had a suitable tank these would be a great fish. Thank you Charles!

I think you have a comprehension problem. The Texas Winter Storm completely wiped out most aquaculture facilities in the State. The combination of the unprecedented cold (six days of sub-freezing temperature), the collapse of the Texas electric grid during that entire time, and the lack of propane to fuel heaters and generators due to frozen natural gas lines, was a natural disaster. It caused 100s of human deaths and the loss of much livestock.
It's your take on this that is disgusting.
