Paul Newman created the “Hole in the Wall gang” camp named after this movie in 1988. It’s a camp for children with serious illnesses so that the kids can just have fun. It is specifically adapted to accommodate their physical and medical needs.

Etta is played by Katharine Ross, who has been married to Sam Elliot, who has the most famous moustache in Hollywood, imho, for 40 years. He played Virgil Earp in Tombstone. Paul Newman & Robert Redford make an awesome & extremely handsome pair! Their chemistry is great! Please watch them in THE STING. You'll love it! I promise.

I believe, the TV show, "Alias Smith and Jones," a brief series, was meant to evoke Butch and Sundance. Mostly, because of it's similar tone and setting and time period. But more, too, the specific use of those aliases -- which were likely not copyrighted or copyrightable, as specifically generic names. Idk, but it seemed like it was riding that wave of fame at the time. TV did that to *Planet of the Apes* for years. Lots of movies became half-fast series on TV. That's not working for Amazon today, haven't seen it elsewhere for awhile.
The '70's invented porns as we know them today. And that same cheesey frame of cheap exploitation showed itself in everything on TV, even down to Saturday morning cartoons, eventually taking over television entirely.

I died a little inside when you said you "think" you know who Paul Newman was. He's one of the best actors of all time, a great man, and also (as I've been told by friends who worked with him in racing) pretty much the most down to earth, relaxed, and funniest people of all the time. Also would highly recommend Cool Hand Luke as a must-see Newman movie.

This was the first movie I saw in theaters. I was four or five, before my brother was born, when my uncle lived with us who was only a few years older than me. We went to the drive thru, back when you still had to hang the posted speaker on something inside the car. Usually it was the window, but it started raining so my dad rolled up the window on the cord and hung the speaker on the ceiling handle behind the door. The window fogged up and we had to run the car for the defroster and the windshield wipers. And my parents bickered. But that speaker was just over my head, and we parked close, so I could see well enough to follow the movie -- and I was riveted. I didn't cry at the end, which nobody noticed except me, and it confused me. 'Raindrips Keep Falling on My Head' became my favorite song. I was really excited when *The Sting* (1973) came out. I liked it even better.

HOWEVER, two of my favorites are “Slap Shot” with Paul Newman and “Brubaker” with Robert Redford. “Slap Shot” is a comedy about a minor league hockey team. “Brubaker” is a lot more serious. Newman and Redford had such great chemistry (becoming good friends and enjoyed pulling personal pranks on each other) on screen that they did a 2nd film together, The Sting (not related to this movie) was released in 1973. The Sting did even better than Butch Cassidy , both in awards & box office. Butch and Sundance were in their diapers while the Earps were doing their thing in Tombstone and Dodge City. Crazy. Butch was known as the friendliest criminal. A master of manipulation.
You definitely gotta see The Sting. Trailer will get you hooked.
