  • Truck Haulage came to Bingham canyon mine in 1963. This was when large haul truck development was taking place. Companies like Wabco, Unit Rig, K W Dark, and Euclid were building trucks, experimenting, and improving them, constantly making them larger and larger. Pictures show an experimental Euclid truck they used at the mine, R-X rear dump hauler, known as the R-105, it came around the late 1960s. It was unique, being four-wheel-drive with an articulated frame and a pair of tires on each 4 wheels. The truck was good for downhill hauls because of its aggressive retard system, but it had a bad suspension that made it bounce. These are the only 2 pictures I have of this truck we had for a short time.

The iron mine my dad worked at in Minnesota bought into these R105's in a big way, mainly because they couldn't get Lectra Hauls or Wabcos delivered in a reasonable time and they needed 100 ton trucks to replace their 20 year old 34 ton Euclids.
They weren't very good trucks and only lasted about 3 years.
They even had a turbine powered version as a test unit.
