  • Today I asked exchange students in Korea if they would recommend becoming exchange student in Korea.
There's a lot of good things to live in Korea for one or two semesters. But at the same times there are some difficulties as well.
Let's listen what they have experienced and felt.
    00:00 Intro
    00:29 Interview starts
    01:47 Q1. Good things?
    04:48 Q2. Bad things?
09:35 Q3. What would you say to people hesitating?

The American student makes a good point about emphasis on age. I like the idea of respect for your elders, but being asked you age constantly would be irritating for me. Although part of the Korean diaspora in my culture it is rude to ask someone's age. Also I am very happily surprised he has opportunities to speak French in Korea of all places!

Tbh as a korean, I think age culture is dumb. Would happily respect elders but it's so dumb that we should pay respect and say in a way more polite way if they are born 1 or 2years faster than me. Ngl I think the age culture is one of the main factor why we lack creativity.

I totally agree with the Jamaican student about the contrast between drivers and those subway patrons. Unfortunately that is not specific to Korea. I see the same impatient (sometimes aggressive) drivers here in Canada. That said he will also soon learn about "pali-pali" culture in Korea.

I agree that we should respect the elders but one year difference is not that much!
In k-dramas,I watched a lot of scenes as respecting others who have only one year difference! It's kinda odd thing about Korea or Korean people! But overall their society is nice!

Korean ppl don't call each other by name. They call each other by relative-designations.
I.e. when you call your friend(named Yong In) 1 yr older than you, You would call him "Hey! Yong! How are you?", but Koreans would say "형! 뭐해?"
So it is, actually, important to know other's age, entering year of high school/college, military serving, and all kinds of background information in Korean language.

It won’t work. If person A is born on June year 1 and person B is born on Dec year 1, they can be friends. If person C is born on June of year 2 and B decided to become a friend with C, this can work between them. However, when all three meets, it will cause social awkwardness because A and C have age gap of 1+. This isn’t the worst of it. If C friends with D who is born on jan of year 3. When all four meet, age gap between A and D is 2+. And this chain can grow arbitrarily long.

I’ve lived in Korea for 5 years. It’s not that they have to respect elders, -they very much often do not. It’s just about taking with honorific language when someone is older. That’s a very specific kind of respect.
