  • Our documentation of the night we drank Absinthe while listening to the new Depeche Mode album Sounds of the Universe (2009) and Flight of the Conchords. Hours of video condensed into 6 min.
We consumed the Absinthe in two ways:
"The Bohemian Method" -- a sugar cube is placed on a slotted spoon over a glass containing one shot of absinthe. The sugar cube is pre-soaked absinthe and set on fire. The flaming sugar cube is then dropped into the glass igniting the absinthe. A shot glass full of water is added to douse the flames. Or the "Cooking the Absinthe/Flaming Green Fairy" method allow the fire to burn itself out.
"The Bavarian Method" - The sugar cube is pre-soaked in absinthe and set on fire. The cube must be melted down until the sugar is in a liquid form. The liquid sugar is then poured into the absinthe shot, slightly stirred, and then the shot is taken.

I sell a lot of absinthe at work (it's big here in New Orleans. The liquor store I work at has over a dozen different brands available for sale, and the Absinthe Museum is just three blocks away). My favorite brands are Pernod (make sure to get Pernod absinthe and not the pastisse- it's about $80.00 a bottle), St. George (has a brandy base and is really nicely balanced) and Marteau (both Marteau and St. George are made in the US. St. George in San Francisco nd Marteau in Portland)

The "Original Absinthe" from the 1800th century is nothing compared to the Absinthe you can get nowadays. A study has shown that a original recipe from 1899 has 4.3 mg/L thujone. Today you can get Absinthe with 111 Mg/L thujone, and 75.5% Alcohol (151 proof) (see the Zele Premium Absinthe).

Hm... what brand absinthe is that? I notice that you're consuming it in the bohemian fashion (setting it on fire and drinking it neat). I've always preferred my absinthe diluted 1:4 parts with water, and a sugar cube. It tastes substantially better that way, and allows you to appreciate the flavors better.
