what a wonderful video. JUST what a prospective 319k owner like myself needs to know. I amazes me why some videos on RUclips have millions of views and some have thousands. This one should be in the millions in my view, it is clear, great camera work and real understanding of how newbies need to know what to even the casual user may see as being the most obvious, basic and incidental details. Thank you!
He says there were 23,000 of these machines made, so it is unlikely that MILLIONS of people would need to see this video! (It is very helpful for those who own these machines, though.)
I inherited a Singer 320K from my late mother, before she owned it, it belonged to my Grandmother, its a wonderful machine to use. Its now a family heirloom and will be passed down the family as time goes by.
Thank you for sharing your extensive knowledge on servicing this beautiful machine and going the extra mile to get the camera close ups so we can see exactly what you are describing. I just picked up a 306k and feel a bit more confident to give it the attention it deserves.
I am so grateful for this video. My Singer 285K wasn't picking up thread and I tried everything and nothing worked. I found your video and you mentioned the dull needle as possible problem. I changed the needle and it's working like a pro now. I also realised the very tip of the old needle had broken off. I'm an absolute beginner with sewing machine. I only have this for 5 months for my paper crafts. Never worked on sewing machines before in my life . Your video was a life saver. Thank you so very much 😃💜
Thank you again. Just serviced my 306k and when I went to test the stitching, the needle was hitting the strike-off plate. The hook was a wee bit advanced (like 1mm), but bringing it back would have made the striking more pronounced. Even after loosening the screws, I could only get about 1mm off movement out of the mechanism, and as I tightened the screws up again, they moved back into the divots that were already in the shaft, undoing the adjustment I had just made. Thankfully hubby had a go and he managed to tweak it so the needle would stop hitting the strike-off plate. The hook is still a tiny bit advanced, but still workable. At least the needle isn’t striking now. Thank you for making such a clear, close-up video. Immensely helpful.
I own a singer 319k which which was bought new by my mother so I have all its parts and even the book . It needs a good going over before I use it so I am happy for any videos to help me. Thank you.
Very clear instruction. I was an apprentice back in antiquity and still learn practical things by being shown. Thanks for taking the trouble to share your trade.
The video is good. Explanation is excellent. The schematics you presented are very illustrative and simple for understanding! Thank you very much. I will do adjustments on my 320k and let you know the outcome.

@@InStitches Got the 319 running beautifully, all stitches. The 320's timing belt is so stretched out and loose that I just cannot get it to run reliably. Have you ever put a belt on one of these? Thank you!
@InStitches Finally replaced the loose cloth timing belts in my 319 & 320 with corded rubber belts. Wow, what a difference! Both machines run perfectly now, and super quiet!
Thank you great information. Your calculator is a HP 35 which is close to 50 years old! I know because my husband had one while he was an engineering student at San Diego State in 1973 when he bought his calculator.
Big thankyou, I was looking for a video on this subject just a few weeks ago. Until the thread gremlin incident, I was using a 20U bobbin holder with the universal needles. There are at different 20U bobbin holder designs though, and read that one style is better with older machines, and another with more recent.
If you have a 206/306/319/320 with the pair of 12 O'Clock orienting pins in the bobbin case you can just use a 20U shuttle and then standard needles. If you have the one with the single locating pin at the 4 or 5' O'clock position (which I assume might be in the newer-produced machines, then it requires further modification. Check out Joe Kahno's channel on replacing the hook and shuttle w/ a 96-10 and then using 15x1 needles and the standard swing needle bobbin cases. If that is swapped out and the timing is set properly as was discussed in this video you should be good to go. As a side note, many of the aftermarket bobbins don't work particularly well with the bobbin winder and Joe has a very good tip in his video, unless you want to lightly use a dremmel.
This is so helpful! I just acquired a 320, so nice to have information from an expert. Any chance you would be willing to show how you got into the gearbox on the 320? If there's a service manual or adjuster manual for the 320, I have not been able to find it. Thanks so much for this video!
Many thanks for a fantastic timing instruction. I had this issue on my 320.k and i found that those 2 stop screws holding the hook swing are badly worn. Do you possibly know what these 2 screws have for dimension.? It is not metric thread that is most common here in Sweden but I think it can be American 3/16 UNF (4.77 mm). When i know the right dimension i´m thinking of replace them with insex stop screws so i can get them really tight so the swing wont slip thast easy.
Hi! Where did you find the bars at the base that support your singer? I’ve been trying to use google to find them and I’m not even sure what they are called or how to find them.
Thanks for this. I’ve just bought a 306K and while the timing appears ok, having big issues with the needle throwing out to the side (like zigzag) when it is supposed to be set to straight stitch.
I have just picked up an additional 306K and it appears that the machine is completely freed up, however there isn't enough adjustment to bring the stitch length lever all the way down and to the larger stitches. Any thoughts how to adjust that? It looks like the feed dogs were messed with as the screws show wear and they aren't working perfectly as well.
Thank you for a very instructive and helpful video. This should be transferable to other machines as well, I believe. I am considering buiying a 320k. Price is around 200 Euro. Seller says in perfect condition. Why should I buy this instead of a modern machine?
Do you think that the needle strikes on the strikeoff plate were due (in part) to the fact that the two screws that held the assembly were loose? It seems to me that in addition to the wrong needle if the assembly was loose needle strikes would not be unexpected.
I have a Singer 319k that suddenly stopped working, I don’t understand why. The last time I used it it was perfectly fine, but the next day it would not react to the motor controller. The light works, so there is a power connection. Any thoughts of what the reason might be?
Having purchased a 1960 Singer 306K a few days ago, this video will be invaluable with helping me to fully restore the machine. Your camera's close-up detail is nothing less than spectacular and your skill with positioning it to give beautifully clear views of what you are describing. May I ask which camera you use for these close-ups? Thank you.
I appreciate your reply. I only ask as we have a laser welder for use with my partners jewellery business. We didn't want to pay £12K to purchase the machine with a 'built in' close up camera, but this may resolve our problem... Thanks again!
Thanks very much, I just got a nice old 319K and have managed to set the timing thanks to this video! Sews well but the reverse side not looking quite right. Bobbin tension? I'm new to sewing...
Help can someone show me picture or measure the SCREW U in the manual "intermediate bight regulator" I have managed to find a screw and a washer that I can get to work but would like get a screw that looks a bit better and just use my fingers or I will have to make one. It is quite a small thread smaller than the screw for the presser foot. It took me a while to figure out that this U screw has to clamp the outer ring. Thanks for the timing video it was well done. John
I'm hoping you can me. My problem is with the hook shaft on my singer 319. I think after watching your timing video. The bobbin assembly is in the wrong position on the shaft. I believe this because when the needle is on the way back up it hits the bobbin assembly and won't complete the cycle. At this point I have to reverse direction. I can't get the bobbin assembly off the shaft. Very very stuck. If it's too far forward now how do I get it back into place? I don't want apply too much force. I am putting penetrating oil and checking each day but it's been a week and no progress. Nothing moving. I hope you can help. Thanks Carole.
I am not that familiar with Singer machines, but the setup of the machine reminds me of the Bernina with the front loading bobbin and the free arm. In sewing history which machines came first and why did Elna do the drop in bobbin. Which bobbin do you prefer and why. Thanks again.
I do like the arrangement of these Singer models as they are more like an industrial machine with the full rotary hook. They are quieter and smoother than an oscillating hook. I also like the Elna because of its rotary hook design. Thanks again Anita.
It's the actual point that is longer, so the needle eye would be out of position. Apparently there are modified bobbin cases that allow you to use standard needles. Thanks.
My Singer 319K does not move the needle column to zig zag, how can I fix it? I was sewing before, the needle broke and the thread got tangled under the serrated teeth and the SIINGER 319K sewing machine no longer moves the column when activating internal decorative sewing stitches.
will a roller foot work on this machine my 306 bobing is different to yours itmy hook has three screws bobbing case doesnt fit any of the other machines i have there the same 319 320 an 306 zig zag only
