I actually asked myself about a month ago if this track could be run by those cars. Two observations. Both involve the corkscrew. First the physiological effects of that negative g drop would have on the driver. Specifically _red out_ to the eyes. Second observation is what would happen if a wreck occurred there. Depending on the gap between racers and how long it would take to get a yellow signal that the driver actually sees and reacts for that could be an expensive and dangerous kink in the track. Good video!
There were F1 to Laguna Seca rumors way back in the early '90s when the current layout was still new (everything between the pit straight and the lefthander that leads up the hill was added in 1988-89 to attract what we now know as MotoGP). If it didn't happen then, it's not going to happen now, even with F1's renewed interest in the US market. The wheelbases of today's cars alone basically rule it out...they'd all be high-centered on the corkscrew on lap 1.
Having driven this track many times in my E46 M3, seeing a car lap here sub-1:00 is mind blowing. Just shows how incredibly phenomenal modern F1 cars are. Having said that-- I would love to see F1 at Laguna Seca despite such a short track. Monterey Car Week is a petrolhead spectacle. Folks come in groves to watch Endurance races, Indycar, and formerly MotoGP at this famed track. Why not F1?
Sadly, it doesn't come up to modern F1 standards. Not so much the track itself, it's the tiny paddock. WSB still goes there (well, under normal circumstances) and even they can't take support races. I used to watch Cart racing there (Indy is on a pay-a-ton-for channel, Cart was on Eurosport which comes with the basic but still expensive satellite TV I have to have - crap reception for terrestrial broadcasting) and I remember some absolutely classic moves, especially at the corkscrew! And Rossi in Moto GP pulling a cracker on Stoner... It was like those guys were the only ones in the race but it was amazing! As someone else has said, local ordinances are v strict and it just wouldn't be feasible to take F1 there :(
corkscrew always gets a like. listening to the cars and bikes cresting 7 at a buck fifty with idle engine sounds... something special. I prefer the elevation change on these "natural" tracks (laguna seca, sears point, watkins glen) more than the flat ones (sebring, monza). having said that, I still prefer city tracks (long beach, adelaide) to the over-cooked noodles like CotA.
Having driven many hundreds of laps around Laguna, that is pretty realistic. The one thing that needs to be updated, is that the pagoda is no longer there. But there is nothing like not seeing the road when going through the cork screw. It's all timing.
Always great to see you in the simulator. But one thing I have noticed about your driving is that your down shifts are rough and inconsistent. Even over several laps of the same track.
