What a treat to see actual footage of this race. Watch at .5x speed for a more naturalistic view. I remember reading Marguerite Henry's wonderful YA book "Black Gold" back in the 1970's. Read Wikipedia's entry for more information about his brave life and tragic end. Bless him.
Thanks for the .5x suggestion. It made a great difference.
Were you horse crazy, too? MH's book, "Black Gold." is a real tear-jerker!
@@viktoriaironpride4977 didn't she also write the Green Grass of Wyoming?
@@yikes7963 No, that was Mary O'Hara.
What a treat -- my grandfather's horse, Chilhowee, was second in that race, having beaten Black Gold at Latonia. A little hard to pick out here but this is the closest I'll ever come to getting to see one of his horses run -- what fun!
Wow! What a great film of Black Gold, winner of the 50th Running of the Kentucky Derby in 1924. First year they played "My Old Kentucky Home" and the first year the winning owner got a Gold Trophy.
Hi!
I’m trying to post a reply and for some reason it is not appearing. I have some really important information I need to post!
I wonder if the organist in the silent movies would play the "William Tell Overture" when the racing scenes came on....I love to think about the organist (or small orchestra) in the silent days improvising music for the scenes. One good organist can make or break a film.
I remember reading "Black Gold" too, and I have nearly all of Marguerite Henry's books (except for "Cinnabar" about the fox). I wrote her and got an answer, but I didn't make it into her book "Dear Readers and Riders"....the main letter I recall is someone asking how to pronounce "Chincoteague". Just as JK Rowling got hundreds of e-mails asking her how to pronounce "Hermione"... funny the things you remember as a kid. I was always sending letters to people or companies, asking dumb questions, I asked the Breyer Manufacturing Co how to pronounce THEIR name. (I suggested a lot of horse models, all of which they later made, so I guess I wasn't the only pre-pubescent girl who suggested them)
This is the perfect companion for my reading of the new book, "Dream Derby: the myth and legend of Black Gold," by Avalyn Hunter. Oh, for an audio component!
Yes and I was rewarded. Thanks
Boy look at the dust an crowds
It still looks like that in Venezuela
It's best seen at playback speed of 0.5
3:17 Nobody looks very happy, do they? Do you suppose they bet on the wrong horse?
