Pro Tip: if you don't have a heat mat but you do have a fairly big 3D printer, manually set your heated bed to something like 45-50°C and warm it up that way! I actually do this for phone repairs as well. Works like a charm!
I have one of these and I'm debating doing this repair. This computer's isms are so frustrating once the bottom battery has crapped out. Like it won't let you detach the base and it won't let you charge the tablet's battery from the base. The only things it's okay with is running on the external power source without draining the tablet battery and you can charge the tablet if you detach it from the base using paper clips like you showed. Thank you for making this video. It's good to see that if you have enough patience (and IPA), you can get the back off without causing the back to bend out of shape. I'm not too worried about scratches, but I'd like the back to fit in place again.
@@pmarcum7146 yeah definitely could be a concern. I have a shop where I'm lucky enough to be able to take my heat mat outside if I'm really concerned about a battery. You should always have the proper tools to be able to properly take care of a battery if it does turn into a spicy pillow LOL
@@pmarcum7146 A heat mat should not apply any more heat than the battery produces itself when in operation. When you charge a battery they can tend to get quite warm anyway. You're just using a high enough heat with the matt to make the adhesive loosen. I wouldn't go using a heat gun or anything... :)
This was the absolute best how-to video on replacing these batteries I've ever seen, and I've watched several (still trying to build up my confidence to dive in ... I've got the battery, just need some courage!) Questions: (1) All the other videos I've watched involve applying extreme heat to soften the glue. Either using the special heat pads that one warms up in a microwave, or pulling out a heat gun. My concern about using heat is what has delayed me from installing the battery, and I was hoping there was a chemical solution -- which I finally found by watching your video!! But I'm curious: *why didn't you use any heat*, but rather relied on the alcohol to soften up the glue? Is there any possible damage that could be done if the alcohol accidentally goes interior to where the outside borders of the keyboard are? For example, could it cause the external material of the battery to dissolve, and potentially cause a fire in the same way that a puncture to the battery could cause a fire? (2) Could you please, please, please do a video on how to replace the battery in the screen as well?!! I need to replace *both* batteries. (without also replacing the screen battery, my computer won't have the required minimum battery percentage to perform all the needed Microsoft updates. The minimum percentage has to be something like 60%, which can't be achieved by the keyboard battery alone -- I've borrowed a working keyboard from another computer to try to update my laptop to no avail because this minimum percentage was not attainable without the screen's battery holding at least some charge.) (3) Can you put a link to where one can purchase the alcohol and that need thingie that you used to apply the alcohol? I don't know if the alcohol you used is like the 90% kind I buy in a drug store, or something more industrial? And that applicator you used looks super-useful, with the thin needle to inject the alcohol. Thanks again for producing such an instructive and thorough video that made me hit the subscribe button!
While i was replacing the battery, i accidentally disconected de orange little cable that it is connected to the piece where the vents are. What should i do 😢
After owning one of these, I absolutely loved the thing while it worked. However, I will never again purchase something like this that needs to be torn apart to replace something like a battery. Massive design flaw. I used to recommend these to people as a designer and now I tell everyone to run for the hills and not look back.
Microsoft will replace your device with one that they have butchered in a similar manner. There is no other way to get it apart, that is how it is designed. And they will do so for quite a significant price.

I put it on a heat mat as well for a while on like 45C to 46C. Helps lossen up that adhesive. Great video!!!
I saw another video that used heat as well. If I attempt this repair (I may just use mine as a glorified desktop), I'll consider some heat.
I'm very nervous about applying heat to a failed battery ... isn't there a danger in heating these batteries up and turning them into spicy pillows?

Yeah, Microsoft even describes it as unserviceable. They couldn't afford screws i guess.... :)
