- On this episode of StarTalk Chat Room, we’re taking a deep dive into episodes seven and eight of Cosmos: Possible Worlds. Given that we are currently living in the “Corona-verse,” Neil deGrasse Tyson is joined by video call by his intrepid comic co-host Chuck Nice.
We start with episode seven, “The Search for Intelligent Life on Earth.” You’ll learn about the Five hundred meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST) located in China which has a 500m diameter disc, making it the largest radio telescope in the world. Neil tells us what it was like to film at the telescope itself. Find out why radio waves are the most ideal form of communication across the galaxy. Neil and Chuck ponder if aliens were trying to contact us via radio waves before we invented a way to detect them.
You’ll hear from executive producer Jason Clark to talk about one of his favorite moments from the series. Discover more about the writing process behind Cosmos: Possible Worlds. Then, we explore the intelligent life on Earth that you might have overlooked: bees. Neil explains how you can get a cosmic perspective studying something so close to home.
After the break, we welcome long-time friend of StarTalk, Madame Saturn herself, Carolyn Porco. Episode eight, titled “The Sacrifice of Cassini,” explores the journey of the Cassini space probe’s mission to explore Saturn and its moons. Carolyn was the leader of the Cassini Imaging Team and she takes us inside the control room on one of the most epic journeys of our time. You’ll hear about the overlap Cassini had with the Voyager mission, including Carolyn’s own involvement.
Discover more about the famous “Pale Blue Dot” photo. We look at Carl Sagan’s influence on inspiring the public with scientific information and how Carolyn continued that initiative with Cassini. Lastly, we ponder what the next mission will be and what tantalizing information could be out there awaiting our discovery.

I love when scientists have a sense of humor...it’s so refreshing.
I'm from Iran and i watched the whole episodes of Cosmos i mean those were already aired and its great pal Neil you are awesome
That moment when u get a Niel degrasse tyson ad while watching star talk.. im living the life people!
Oh....you don't know how to skip ads yet 😮
I was relieved at the sight of Chuck Nice...these times!
🤘😖
Carolyn Porco is very beautiful inside and out. Thank you so much for having her in this video Dr. Tyson.
The painting behind Neil changes every time he does startalk
For the first time on youtube Neil, your voice is not loud enough hahaha... Stay safe stay healthy!!
bubaks2 he’s finally not eating the mic !
I adore Carolyn. She's beautiful, intelligent and has a great sense of humour. She also has a lovely warmth about her.
It does not start till 3 AM here in Birmingham, U.K. 🇬🇧
I hope I’m still awake. 😴.
Ah well, at least I ain’t got work in the morning. (Lockdown here in Brum).
Wake up!!!
Neil and Chuck are such beautiful people inside and out.
I love the Cosmos show and I could listen to you narrate for hours, sir. I loved hearing about the Mycelial network and needed out due to being a Star Trek fan. And it was just so awe-inspiring to watch the origins of life on our pale blue dot. Then, learning about Kondratyuk; Huygens, and seeing the simulated death of Cassini-Huygens probe...man I got so emotional
I don’t think Neil was kidding when he said he wasn’t authorized to talk about that. He totally changed the subject real quick
It is wonderful to see how humanistic these scientists are. Carolyn Porco and Neil DGT are both so invested in informing the general public about scientific advancement. And I really appreciate Chuck Nice's interest and enthusiasm.
I feel sorry for flat-earthers who reject the science and deprived of all this beauty
Bader Alaraimi - If you think that’s bad, there’s Covid-19 deniers out there, already. I’ve run into several of them. I wish that I could say that they were trolls, but they’re very serious. Trolls usually don’t put this much effort into something. Does it make me a bad person, to hope that they get the virus?
@@Willam_J You may not be a bad person. But that's certainly a bad wish...
@@Willam_J Sounds like natural selection to me.
The 'Pale Blue Dot' is just... woah. Choking me up.
I absolutely loved her story about how the pale blue dot came about. It's such a simple picture...but powerful rendering of how insignificant we are.
I wouldn't say insignificant, because we are significant. But it highlights the wastness of space and our current place in it. The perspective of the blue dot, should render us humble. And should inspire us to do great things. We really should consider working together.
I just LOVE Carolyn Porco! She is one of my favorite people.
I love how genuine they both are. I wish everyone followed the rules to this extent about staying inside amd away from each other other than close family
Excellent live !
Chuck is broadcasting from my dead great-aunt's living room... wow. Mind blown.
Lol. Looked like my grandma's living room! Wow.
that is a mind blower. much love
I think they're in the same room, with different decor and wall colors. They're not fooling me. 😜
It's times like this that Chuck Nice is a pleasure to listen to! Love ya bud!
O cmon I like chucks comedic voice. It breaks up calm behaviors most of the guests have on this show
Ah I enjoyed the recent bee-story episode tonight and spent time attending to the stirring my homebrewed mead (fermented *honey* beverage) while watching. Great episode guys!
Chuck, sunflowers are my favorite 🥰
great episode
I absolutely love you guys, you made my self-quarantine all that much better! Thank you
WOW is Signal and is Mind Blowing)))))))
Always a pleasure and a much needed escape from the crazy world we find ourselves in! Thanks Neil/Chuck!
Thanks guys, a real public service.
I would like to see more of this Star Talk Chat Room episodes, its fun to listen to..
Chuck and Neil and even more dynamic duo than General Relativity and Quantum Mechanics
💛💚🧡💙 Chuck Nice is a very Nice person. Thankyou 💛💚🧡💙
Love Cosmos. Love the mix of animation and storytelling. Great job Neil!
The spectrum of a fish is typically in the area of 2pi times lambda squared, depending on the particular species of fish.
Another set of 2 beautiful episodes
It's a treat to watch & hear these Legends 😍
Legends? Chucks cool and all but he ain't no legend.
Love talking about possible extraterrestial life 💙🌌🌌
The Universe expands in all directions
Love all things cosmic. Neil get some rest. You appear exhausted.
Anthony Davis - I noticed that, too. He looks completely exhausted. He lives in the US epicenter of this pandemic. He needs some rest, to stay strong!
*baked
His does sometimes, I agree.
Thank You For an Amazing Season of Cosmos ...
I like what you learned about bees. I keep bees in local traditional longhives and so far you just took a look at the tip of an iceberg that is called the world of bees. They all some what different and have personalities - some are agressive, some are more laid back, some are in a hurry and some move more relaxed, some fly slow with big loads some fast with light loads. They recognize you, they know that you help them and don't want to do them harm. Best way to understand that they are all individuals is to look what hive "guards" do. They all get the job done, but they do it a bit differently.
Brilliant episode!
Aaah yes. Reminder on!
I looked up and my picture was taken on the Pale Blue Dot!
I love it!!
NASA did a lot of live streaming today including a space walk from the ISS
Talk about the asteroid and it’s near collision with earth
@Doug Baird You are generically replying to some guy that mentioned nothing you are talking about :)
When it's not commercial time, commercial comes in. When it's commercial time, commercial comes in. i just want STARTALK, YT!
The Hulk is Marvel, not DC :)
lol i knew someone would say it :P
He said it with such confidence that I just assumed everyone including Marvel was wrong 🤷🏽♂️
Well he's a scientist not a show buff
thank you guys ! such Amaze! sincerely.
Got to love the use of comic book characters to describe the facts of science. OL
I love the, "Uuu," at about 22 minutes...
also forgot to mention our beloved Carolyn Porco, who is incredibly inspiring and such an amazing person to listen to as well :)
Cosmic walkie talkies, awesome.
Thank you
Bawled my eyes out in episode 8.😭😭😭😭😭 Can anyone please tell me the violin music they used in the Cassini photographs in episode 8?
I had 2 ads in this video so far.. both had Neil in the commercials. Lol
Wait a minute. Hulk is DC!?, 😂
Lol cosmic knowledge is not comic knowledge🤓🤯
Hulk is Dark Horse comics
I had to rewind and see if I heard what I thought I heard
Love your channel and I'm a going through every single video. As soon as Calolyn Porco started to talk about the Pale blue dot... I felt such joy and togetherness, started to cry from joy.
Saving up to buy my first star tracker to capture some awesome images. Been taking only Milky Way shots so far.
Thank you for the knowledge, insigh and laughter that your channel provides!
Keep sharing as that is the only way we will prevail as a society.
Bringing all the love from Latvia,
Janis Ventaskrasts
Never thought I will be able to correct Neil but Hulk is not from DC Comics. It's Marvel :) Big fan from Poland
Where are the rest of these episodes that unpack the cosmos series season one and season two featuring Neil deGrasse Tyson?
Neil looks high AF.
When talking about science? When is he not? It's his drug.
@@BlackEpyon well said 👍 science is a drug 🤗
Best way to cure the isolation :D
Hes at home less professional makeup.
Definitely high lok
This is interesting.
26:45 I was waiting for them to break into acapella
Chuck: They shake their butts!
Neil: Scientifically correct term is "wiggle their abdominal area"
Interesting. I remember Neil deGrasse Tyson from, what was it, Discovery Channel? Waay back when... : )
Hi Dr Tyson and dr funny. My name is Robert brown,I have been a star talk subscriber for the last 2 years. I want to ask is it possible for mars to have lost its atmosphere/magnetosphere,ect... When Theois collided with earth to form the moon. The question is when that collision happ
end is it possible that it could have caused mars to be decemated by the shockwaves and shrapnel from the collision? Thanks so much for your time and I can't wait to see if this gets answered.
Mind blown 👽
Hi. You have interviewed Brian Green. What about Sir Roger Penrose and what he proposes with his Conformal Geometery.
It would be nice to be able to hear you well, surely afford a couple, medium quality mics and stands, so that volume equalization could be a thing
Does anyone know how I get access to the Week 1 through 3 episodes? They've been removed.
🌟🗣
Can't wait
Love from India 🙏
It's 7:08 here
👹

Spreads greater than any Virus all over Universe
Shout out to DC for the big green guy
I finally found the comment. I had lost faith
Chuck microphone is too sensitive or Chuck is too loud , i am with headphones and it hurts my eardrums when Chuck is excited
I totally agree with Neil, this is how i also view the world around us, we may think we our more intelligent than other creatures, we have created technology and machines to depend on but we never have a deep communication with the nature, what if those creatures sees us more powerful than them and the same time more foolish. We are judging other creatures which have more sharper instincts than us according to our standards.
She was so cool
I wish they would fix the audio so I'm not turning the volume up when they're talking normal and suddenly they start shouting into the mic and it's waaaaay loud.
there we go social distancing great job!
no more touching and sitting close next to each other. About time and great job!👍🏼
Yes
Why are the previous episodes unavailable ?
Where can I watch the latest episode??!!
Its so much fun to get yelled at out of nowhere about a garlic crust pizza. Thanks RUclips advertising.
We on this planet: earth and there is no other. Singapore is where I got a Minolta camera
You can tell when Neil really admires a guest because he listens them for longer periods of time
It's cause he's sick with a bad cold that he doesn't have his normal energy and finishes your sentence or starts answering your question before you even get to finish asking it.
Chuck is nice and loud as much =D
..exactly what I was thinking that some beings may have advanced their technology or we may have advanced our technology by the time radio waves reach us...
Carolyn porco is the best!
lit lit lit lit
One of the ways we humans sped up communication was sending light through fiber optics, and I wonder if it would be possible to vary the wavelength of the light coming from a star so communicate with the universe.
Not using light. The maximum speed is the same.
Hulk needs some radiotherapy, man!
Whenever I get an xray, I'm always so freaked out like my head's gonna explode.
Is Sat like a vacuum of the solar system cleaning the dust or something and exgarding material that cannot break down or producing the material that makes up the rings along with other space material and rock as the result of its gravitational force?
The rings are from moons that have been broken up by tidal forces. Jupiter is much more massive than Saturn.
What software are they using?
The Incredible Hunk could have saved a lot of time by simply going on Dr Phil to talk through his anger problems lol
Straight to the ranch
Puny doc
That laugh is funny, hee 😁 hee😁 hee 😁hee 😁hee😁 5:18
How long does it take to produce enough organic material ( through supernovas) in order to create an planet which can produce/sustain life
Just for you information in bee farm you sometimes force the queen to stay were the farm is to produce the honey. This is cruel since bees have the will to fly outside of this farm. Without the queen stuck in the farm there is no honey.
Neil our personal astrophysicist
The Credible Hulk is a facebook page too :3

If only she were single, within 10 years of my age, and willing to lower her standards, like a lot....
No but seriously, Carolyn is the type of woman that I dream of my daughter becoming.
Such an inspiration. Truly one of the defining women of our day. Madam Saturn!!!
