- Just a quick look and play with the Skinner peep sight and front sight blade on a Rossi 1892 octagonal barrel in 38special 357magnum. Targets are small cardboard boxes, birchwood casey 8" plate and a target stand. These are zeroed for 100yards. Shooting distance is 50 yards on an approved private range with insurance and no public access.
I’ve found running no aperture to work the best mounted that foreword. Love those sights.
Very nice shooting!
Looks good 👍 but... I really prefer aperture sight over buckhorn but I have never tried the long eye relief. With the aperture close to your eye it's very instinctual an the aperture doesn't affect your sight picture. Does the long eye relief affect your sight picture? I would have to try it but I feel like I would prefer the closer a picture like a Tang sight. Also with a chang a receiver sight you get a longer sight radius. Don't take me as being negative I'm just not sure? Thanks for sharing
Hi Brian, I didn't take that as negative at all. I must say you confused me a little there. I got rid of the buckhorn sights. They were ok, I got on with them fine for general use but for precision work they can't hold a flame to an apeture Sight.
I have used very long radius apeture sights so I know what you mean. The shorter radius of a peep sight mounted where this is is still intuitive and precise as long as you select the right aperture and front blade.
I also have had a tang sight mounted on this rifle. I think you might appreciate my mauser ES340B video - that rifle has a rear tang sight, the proper iron sights and a scope. Sounds crazy but it actually works really well. Tang sight for long range, irons for a range of distances for plinking and the scope for precision work at a set distance.
@@bangNbark Very good I will have to try and find that video. I was thinking with a large enough aperture on the barrel like this video may work very well for stalking game inside of 100 yards that is probably what it was designed for. Thanks for answering. I will check out your other videos. Happy shooting in the UK do you also hunt? Thanks
It's this one ruclips.net/video/pD8KQpeCWzo/видео.html
Yes that's the exact intent being out in the brush 50-125 yards or so.
I don't do as much as I used to, but I would normally hunt squirrel, rabbit, fox etc. The usual farm work
I have this skinner sight setup on mine and am very happy.
Great sights!
Looks good, thinking of this for my henry, how much does it have in elevation?
Many rifles do require a taller front sight with this setup. But easy to do
Looks fast and accurate. Did you do groups before and after buckhorn to aperture? I'm considering this sight or marbles bullseye or lyman tang on a 73. Thanks for sharing 👍
Thanks Brian. I shot a lot of groups for either load development or just because I like shooting groups but never with the thought to compare accuracy between the sights.
Ultimately any 3 of those choices will bring some benefit in some way. However changing a sight won't create more accuracy, that is largely limited by the rifles mechanics and condition, the ammunition and us behind the trigger.
What those sights will however do is they will be generally much easier to centre and be clearer - which makes you more consistent, which gives the impression that your rifle is now more accurate and easier to aim. I hope that makes sense.
If you want the most accuracy benefit to call it that, the tang sight is the way to go. For a benefit that looks like faster aiming - the peep sight. Although both will improve perceived accuracy and speed to some level. Hope that helps.
@@bangNbark Yes I understand it doesn't change the accuracy but buckhorn sights are not too precise. So I think it would be safe to say the aperture sights definitely add precision. I do like the tang sight but I have considered what you have but I have never shot a rifle with a aperture that far from my eye. I've mostly shot Marlins with the williams receiver sight but don't want to put touch the receiver on the 73 that I plan on getting. I will probably end up going with the tang sight but I may buy both to experiment with. Thanks for sharing 👍
@@brianlee6849 Ah gotcha. Well with the peep that far forward it starts a little strange but it gets intuitive quite quickly. I definitely prefer a tang sight for precision or long range, and the other styles for closer work. I have a video on my Mauser es340b. That has an old tang sight and also the standard leaf spring style iron sights. Best of both worlds for me 🙂
@@bangNbark Yes that is a cool rifle the only bolt action rifle I ever seen with a Tang sight . Thanks 👍
Your welcome and thank you. Have a great day
Hi. I've just ordered a set for my Rossi. I'm going to fit it myself , fairly confident about removing the buck horn sight by drifting it out but not quite sure how to remove the step ramp adjuster. It doesn't look like it's screw fixed. Did you remove and fit yours?
It's easy in principle, get a decent brass punch and hammer and start gently and prepare to go quite hard. It's worth having a read on some forums, some suggest presoaking in penetrating fluid for a while although mine didn't need any. There are different ramp adjusters on these. Most are loose fitted meaning they just drop out when you punch out the sight. I think I saw one with a flat head screw once. I'm sure you'll be fine, they are quite straightforward.
I removed my Henry rear sight a while back and put it back on right after I thinkbthe ramp adjustment just came off when I tapped the dovetail out.
Where did you order from as I can't find a UK supplier.
Andy Scaife Hi, I ordered direct from Skinner- was around a week and painless to sort out. I have also bought them for other rifles on forums, but they don't come up vey often. I guess for UK you could try South Yorkshire SS or Kranks. If they don't sell they may be able to point you to someone else but direct was fine for me. Good luck
Thanks for showing speeds in nonsense USA number so we could understand
Lots of British still naturally use imperial
Not living on an inconsequential little island has its privileges.
How did you get a Taurus Rossi 1892 with No stupid top safety ?
Lol good isn't it? Im not sure but from memory I think this is a 1993 gun, so perhaps preproduction of that safety. Or maybe because its for the UK market but I would be very surprised if that were true.
I know that in the US, in order to import a rifle it needs to have a manual safety, so they implemented that silly one just to meet our standards here.
I think the only good thing that comes from that safety is the skinner sight that can be fitted in its place. thats a ludicrous law though.
That's only for "Modern Cartridge" firearms, a blackpowder reproduction can be safety less.
What are the white things on the bank?
They are small cardboard tile boxes - so the size of a standard ceramic wall tile
Psychosomatic88 looks like a nice range - whereabouts is it?
