Would like to see USMC BLTs deploy with medium airlift capability embraced in combination with with a light mechanized capability. Deploying amphibious medium 6x6 (105, HMG or AGL) and light 4x4 (HMG, AGL, or ATGM) armored cars, with amphibious 6X6 or 8X8 LAVs (ICV, MGS, MC (81mm or 120mm), C2, AA, ATGM, MED, LOG, NBC, & REC configurations) will prove useful on large islands or against fortifications. Current sea assault doctrine calls for landing where the enemy isn't and then attacking overland whenever possible. Some light armor in a sea assault is always useful, Panama reinforced that lesson. Tanks and the old slow infantry carriers must be replaced by vehicles better suited to the newly projected USMC doctrine and projected missions. Helo's and Naval support alone aren't going to cut it. A light amphibious combined arms force with helo's and Naval support will. The FFL did this, and they have proven the force concept in Africa and Central Asia. With naval air, gunfire, and missile support, this new tankless and zero heavy artillery assault force concept could work well for the USMC in the foreseeable future island hopping campaigns against China. The Corps also has to be able to possibly make invasion landings on mainland China to take ports and coastal cities. Armor, even if only light or medium, will be needed.
Old documentary. Some of this equipment has been upgraded already, although it's too bad the EFV was canceled. IF the Marine Commandant's plans come to pass, this will all be history anyway. The idea is for the Corps to become an air mobile strike force bypassing the need for vulnerable ground vehicles entirely. It would take some doing but if anyone could, The Marines are the obvious choice.
