The old part of Bai Dinh pagoda was built in the 13 century ( also under the Trân dynasty ) and the new part was built recently , less than 10 years ago . During the Ly (11th to 13th century ) and the Tran dynasties (13th to 15th century ) , Buddhism was at its apogee in Vietnam and considered as the state religion of the country .
The old part of Bich Dong pagoda was built in the 14-15th century and the new part in mid 20th century . It was renovated many times afterwards . Under the Trân dynasty ( 13th to 15th century ) many kings had chosen Ninh Binh as their retirement place because of its gorgeous sceneries . Another site they also liked was Yên Tu mountain in Quang Ninh province , not very far from Ha Long bay
