@RenoComputerServices I actually am looking to do the same thing on my jetski hull. It is not as deep but pretty scratched up. The Gelcoat repair kit I bought from west marine is not as thin as the one in this video. Polyester paste is thicker, does not leave a smooth surface!
When gelcoat chips off this much it is usually due to a manufacturing error where there is a void in behind. One hard blow and it make a huge chip. You want to remove any gelcoat that has a void behind it so you can fill it all.
Same kayak probably, because he ruined the decal by getting gel coat on it, then not able to sand it off without ruining the decal, so just removed the decal.
Thank you Jim. Beautiful interaction with your child, and your strong/gentle hands calm me as I take on a new DIY project.
Amazing, straight forward instruction. Got a sea kayak from a yard sale with similar gel coat damage.
Thanks Pete! I hope it helped.
Well made film. Will try it right now. Thx.

Great, simple, how to vid... Thanks
Fantastic, thank you
You're welcome!
Thanks for the video! I have a question, don't you have to glass it before applying gel coat since the gouge was pretty deep?
Only if it broke through the original glass. If there was no rupture there is no breach in the glass.
What was that thick layer that was cracked off? Was that the gelcoat?

At the end why are you buffing a different kayak?
