Moondance - Vintage 1956 Gibson ES-175 (with P90) and 1973 Slingerland drum kit

- In this video James Lewis (drums) and Andreas van Greunen (guitar) play an instrumental version of the Van Morrison classic, "Moondance".
James is using silent heads on the drums in this recording, fitted to a 1973 Slingerland kit.
Andreas is playing a 1956 Gibson ES-175, the last year in which the P90 pickup was used, as in 1957 the PAF humbucker was introduced. The guitar was played into a Mesa/Boogie Lone Star amplifier, with a little compression added via an Origin Effects Cali76.

@@andreasvangreunen my pleasure.. I had not heard this tune in about 5 years. We had actually played it in our band and later it got dropped from our sets.. Hearing it again reminded me of how great a tune it is..Plus your take on it was just gorgeous and got me excited to bring it back to our set lists... Our singer had never done it (someone else always sang it in our group ) and she is excited about trying it. So, thank you so much!

I'm really glad to hear you're getting the time in retirement to make this journey. It's a wonderful thing to put your energy into! Progress does feel very slow for most of us, believe me I get very frustrated a lot of the time when it takes me a while to learn a tune or I'm having a an off day when improvising. Setting manageable goals certainly helps (e.g. learning to play 1 or 2 tunes before worrying about playing a dozen) and if you can, it would be great to get into doing some recording. It's amazing what's possible these days with a computer and microphone and having something tangible like a recorded song can give a real shot in the arm to one's motivation!
BTW what style of music do you enjoy playing?

@@andreasvangreunen I really appreciate you responding to my comments. Telling me a bit about your struggles gives me more incentive to keep playing. I would keep it up anyway but it helps to hear a professional tell about the same things I have problems with.
I like to play pretty much anything that I have enjoyed hearing. I really like your jazzy playing. I play rather simple versions of some of the standards like Autumn Leaves, Misty, etc.
There are so many great lessons on the internet and I am currently working on triads, combining them with arpeggios and scales in order to improvise.
I want to thank you for your advice and for inspiring me. Keep up with your wonderful playing. I'm not the only one inspired besides just the enjoyment of the music.

Autumn Leaves and Misty are excellent tunes to be working on and working on triads and arpeggios is a very useful area of focus. At one point I approached jazz standards in a very scale based manner but once I started to focus more on the chord tones by applying arpeggios things started to sound a lot more like jazz! I found a very useful exercise is to land on the 3rd of each chord on the first beat of each bar, and using a looper pedal to limit the exercise to a few chords at the beginning also helped me a lot.
