A comparison of a 40m end fed ham radio antenna versus a Tarheel

  • I have fun doing an informal ham radio antenna comparison using two antennas (an end fed antenna for 40m and a Tarheel mobile antenna) on 40m using WSPR.
    The end fed did better compared to the Tarheel although I'm going to see if I can improve the Tarheel with more radials and different bands.
    I just enjoyed the excuse to play with antennas and Weak Signal Propagation Signal Reporting (WSPR) software.

    Another thought. Regarding setting the clock. The IC705 has a GPS chip so it's clock is locked when you run that as an ad-hoc WiFi hotspot and connect your PC to it and the PC should get the clock synced from the ic705 wlan so you don't need 4G connectivity.

      @@M0SZT The 705 internal GPS is only output on a serial port when you connect via USB cable. You end up with two ports. One is GPS data, the other is CAT control.

    Really great video on antenna experimentation, Carl, like someone eles's comment, that ours is truely an experimental hobby, we try different ideas to see which one produces the desired results, and not only do we get the payoff, but alot of satisfaction in something that we accomplished ourselves, and also a great learning experience. Nice job I throughly enjoyed this one, Carl, nice job.

    Always relaxing to watch your videos. Funny how the end fed has become so popular again. I rediscovered them about ten years ago out of necessity and they simply perform! Using a 9:1 unun gives me all the bands and plenty of DX.

    The way I would have done it Carl . First light the fire. Second open the wine. Third cook the food. Fourth eat the food and drink all of the wine. Fifth think about the radio stuff for a few minutes. Sixth stoke the fire and decide to take a nap (until morning !). Probably explains why I'm not on air much. 73 M7BLC.

    Great to see you out and about again, interesting comparison. I’ve been using EFHW for a few years now and for portable working they really are my go to antenna. And they are cheap. I’m currently experimenting with trying to move my matching unit about a meter higher up the pole and use a counterpoise. Trouble is on a summit it’s hard to do any real comparison. So now the WX is changing may stand a chance. The fun of this hobby, pity I can’t cook. Happy Easter 73 Mike

    nice real world video. you embody the fact that this is an experimental hobby so it was clear to see the payoff / happy moment when what you tried out actually worked. 10w for FT8 is fine .. some use 50W but i think that is shooting fish in a barrel . i used an x6100 once which can tune anything including a loop on the ground - was fun just shoving out 3 watts and seeing where it got to. all good fun.

    Great minds think alike Carl.
    Just last week I had to lengthen a multi band rotatable dipole on 40, 30, and 17 meters... Did basically the same exact method you used to lengthen your end fed. I took lengths of copper wire, wound them round the tips of the radiators, and set them in place with heat shrink tubing.... Worked out pretty darn good... Brought 17 meters from a 3:7 down to a 1:2 on the center of the band. And 40 meters from a 3:4 to a 1:1 center band. Works a treat for electrically short antennas.

    Great video!!!! Love the wit,cooking but proper real life antenna v antenna rather than watching someone use mmana for 20mins!!! Thats why yours and Tim's channels(g5tm) are so good,they have everything👍👍look forward to the next one n I bet that food was nice, looked 😋 😋 😋

    Nice spot Carl. Ant testing, sorry mate too many variables to get a worthwhile result I think. The omni directional vertical on the car vs sloping wire which might be directional, plus what looks like a wall of steel out there, and not quite enough radials, maybe. The vertical antenna might have worked far better on the wall of steel.
    But always enjoy the way you approach these situations.

      @@M0SZT sorry Carl, don't quite follow, only thing I know about the particle excelarators, is the electromagnetic field causes speeds which inturn is a fundermental tool in particle physics research.

    I think the vertical polarisation makes a big difference too, I use an ATAS120A and I have found similar results. I guess really the vertical mobile type antennas are a compromise for practicality against performance. Just use both to suit different outings and enjoy playing radio.
    Conditions were very difficult last weekend with the contest, signals were booming through to my portable QTH.

    Put the MFJ1979 on the tarheel and test... Also you do know that the Tarheel on the car has directivity? Did you take that into account?

    Are you feeding the efhw from the top of the mast?
    When I am out doing sota with my 10m efhw it's fed from ground level(ish). Cheers

    Does this sort of sloped inverted L work better than inverted V for DX?

    You really need two identical wspr transmitters running at the same time for a comparison as conditions can change in minutes on the HF bands.

    ps radials - 8 at least and not resonant. I use 8 X 3m long.
