Long story short, Cuba’s GDP doesn’t begin to cover its socialist agenda’s requirements, and its sources of global welfare have run out. Cuba’s history of debt defaulting with other countries has made it like that dysfunctional uncle that can’t manage himself, and lives off handouts. Cuba is dying a slow death, and the embargo isn’t to blame, despite what the government attempts to tell its people - even the Cuban people know this propaganda is dishonest and incorrect.

Repair parts for Soviet built power plants (that run on oil) are not available from the US. That technology is decades old and obsolete. Nothing short of new power plants with new transmission and distribution infrastructure will reverse the decades of neglect. That costs money, real money, not phony rubles or cuban pesos. USA has embargoed Cuban since the revolution. CIA tried to assassinate their leader and USA even tried to invade the island to topple the government (Bay of Pigs). Wouldn’t you be angry at the USA too? I’m not defending the Cuban communist government, but remember how USA toppled several democratic governments all over South America by supporting fascist military juntas! As @wilinstonthompson1352 noted ther may be extenuating circumstances from the sanctions. Why does the US continue sanctions on Cuba? I live in US and don't care if they have some socialist tendencies.
@@wilinstonthompson1352 ... what? The US still very much has heavy sanctions against Afghanistan. As for Vietnam, they've done much to undo Communisim in practice if not in name, much as China, and unlike Cuba no longer have a state-owned command economy.
I have been to Cuba numerous times, and from my last experience in 2024, the differences are quite stark from previous trips. I'll give some good things I saw first. There are small businesses that have opened up. They sell goods, services, etc to tourists and locals alike. It also feels like it's thriving, as people are more inclined to spend at local places rather than government congolomerates. I think Cubans are great at capitalism, they just need the government to get out of the way. The Bad. The power situation is very perilous and you have no idea when it's going to get cut out. It would honestly be far more serious if Cuba was more industrialized and modern, but Cubans already have adjusted life to it, meaning they know they cannot grow and have accepted it as a fact of life. Food wise, they are greatly limited in choice and the joke many cubans make is "Rice and Pork, or Pork and rice?" and that's to tourists. For many Cubans it's mostly staple foods and some native fruits to sustain their diet. Many Cubans are very unfortunate and in rural areas the poverty is worse than any caribbean Island I have seen. Honestly, despite all of this, Cubans are still proud and grateful people. They have the spirit to become a truly amazing, thriving country. Their people are very ingenuitive, smart, and have a great work ethic. I hope the communists slowly are pushed out with pragmatists who can finally let this island nation truly shine.
As we've seen in other countries run by unelected souls they will drain the pond to stay in power to enjoy their lifestyle while the rest work to feed the leadership.
What a sad story. I was in Varadero in the fall of 2022, and things were bad. I was already pissed about not having Pina Colada because they couldn't get any supply of milk. And there was no hot water to shower because the generator broke (I stayed in a five-star resort). Now, it's far worse.
I (German) am currently in Cuba for holiday. Have been in Havanna today. Every (significant) part of infrastructure was build before the revolution. The buildings people are living in are in a crazy state. I felt insecure for second’s inside, what about living there all the time. And people don’t even bother to look for public work since a doctor earns not enough to fill a car just once (30-50€ maybe) or buy enough food. Crazy to see what socialism does to people and still politicians are calling for similar measures in countries (such as Germany). Power to the people, defund the government.
The Cubans can thank the Castro brothers for their socialist paradise. Seriously. I do wonder why the people don't throw out their government when they know things can be so much better.
Or so much worse ? i saw far , far worse poverty in Mexico than Cuba. Cuba is the safest island in the Caribean , the murder rates of the others are horrific. Cuba`s rate 4 per 100K , compared to Jamaica 53, Saint Vincent 40 , Trinidad 39 , Saint Lucia 36 etc etc
At this point you would have thought that the Cuban government can take a hint from the countries that got rid of communism and today are doing waaaay better than Cuba. It's hard to grasp that it has lasted this long, especially since the fall of the USSR.
Cuba has 11 million people on an island too small and with too little energy, water and other resources to feed, clothe, house and keep the lights on for 11 million people. As food prices rise, so will food insecurity and then civil unrest.
It's unfair for them but not our problem. If they couldn't self-sustain 11 million people, they shouldn't have had 11 million people. I know it's sad to hear but we are animals, and we fit a niche. When the environment is unable to support the local population, it dies until an equilibrium is met. Sure, we could send aid to Cuba, but how long will that take? Will it be indefinite? And for what? What does Cuba offer us. There is nothing wrong with importing resources, but they must offer something in return and how long will that investment return? It might never return. And in the meantime, the people of Cuba will suffer. We would be giving them hope and a slow painful death. Many would suffer now but I say its better to suffer now and less suffer in the long run. Too much of the world has grown endlessly and exploited the environment to its breaking point. And we are surprised when mass deaths happen when those logistics to keep people surviving are strained? Its insanity to think resources are endless. It takes time, energy, and money to transport things to other people. That HAS to come from somewhere and too much demands will cause it to run out too quickly. Cuba made their bed. Embargoes were placed on them but its their governments job to make sure it runs well. And if people were having too many kids that their society couldn't support, that is their fault.
Could have been a rich resort island for US tourists and gamblers. Play nice with Uncle Sam and sell them $20 cigars. But no... the revolution or something.
@@MasterGhostfCuba doesn't have 11 millions. There are far less people than that due to emigration and old age. Cuba can sustain 11millions or more if having a proper government. Nevertheless, you are right, it is not your problem to sort out Cuban problems.
Cuba has about 103 inhabitants per square kilometer, while (non-communist) Singapore goes strong with 8,332 people per square kilometer - allow me to doubt that overpopulation and lack of resources are the main constraints at hand here.

I visited Cuba in January last year for a holiday, very strange place! The hotel never had sugar, butter or potatoes and the food was very basic. Havana is a wonderful place to visit but everything runs on the black market, even the fuel for taxis. Supermarkets had rows and rows of the same product, usually nappies and bottles of cider for some reason but almost nothing else. It was like being in a parallel universe. I did wonder how the country runs
i remember watching a vid and the man interviewed was saying that despite the fact he loves his country{cuba} ,he had to admit that cuba is an open air prison!!!
We've been to Cuba twice; once in March 2013 and once in March 2024 ... what a difference. In 2013 we had no issues really. The food wasn't that great but as they say, you don't go to Cuba for the food. The place was packed, the staff/people were fantastic, the service was amazing, etc. The hotel had a music/dance show each night. It was great. In 2024, it was noticeably different. We stayed in Havana for three nights and had a great time, you can walk anywhere. However it seemed like I was the only white person on the street and was the best target for all those old cars that were just sitting around because there were no tourists. The resort was less than half full. Lots of the staff were great, but it seemed like lots were barely tolerating tourists. The buffet food was so-so, but the a-la-carte restaurants were HORRIBLE, 2 of the 4 meals we had were not editable. My wife described it as they were "cooking with anger". The didn't have eggs or bread for 2 of the 4 days. We've been there twice, I can't image what its like now. So we're going to DR next week instead. If 40% of their tourists are from Canada, and Sunwing is not flying there anymore ... its game over.
The smart Cubans ,now in Florida, send remittances back to family. Cuba would have failed a long time ago without these transfers. This increases the US balance of payments negatively!
Here in Canada there are lots of public reports of bad experiences in the low budget Caribbean and Central American destinations. Cuba is close to the. worst.
I heard from people going there several years ago that hotels would run out of stock for most things a couple of weeks after delivery until their next delivery. It's a socialist country and socialism always fails economically.
Apparently its crap in Cuba. My daughter went there on holiday and it was pitiful. Couldnt get a proper meal. Sorry for Cuban people but this needs to be communicated to people who are used to eating.
Cuba's problem is its affiliation with RUSSIA. Ditch Russia and see the GREAT DAYS again. I fear this is only get worse if Putin stacks his bases there with arms and soldiers.

To be completely honest now we have lost our last coal fired power station we are reliant on the cable from Norway and another from France, So in winter when the sun don't shine much and the wind is either still or blowing a gale we are just a cable cut away from no electricity. Wake up people the lefties have this country by the short and curlers. The irony is the very people that are paying them are dictators the ultimate right wing.

I understand why you say this but l would advise you not to use capitals. It just sounds like you are shouting rather than rational. What would make more sense is for the Cuban government to acknowledge the expropriation of property was wrong but they are clearly in no position to make restitution and in any case, it all happened a long time ago. But this would require a change of governance to a democratic system
I have been to Cuba and unfortunately there is absolutely nothing left of these assets. Everytime there is bad weather more buildings collapse. Its a perfect case study of communism and nationalization of assets. They stuck to it whereas even China abondoned the communist economic model.
Horses and donkeys also require 'fuel' we just call it fodder instead of fuel. What they save on oil they will need to make up for in edibles. I don't know enough about the state of their ecology and agriculture to know if they would be able to feed that many animals, not even including the fact they would first have to get said animals first. Unless you buy them from abroad (which requires foreign currency they don't have) they will need to build up domestic herds for quite a while I imagine. A donkey can only produce a certain amount of offspring in a certain amount of time after all.
@@eminbc So far, the Cubans haven't eaten their oxen (their bovine version of mechanical tractors). As for mules, I wonder if the Cuban mules are as stubborn as their CCP leaders? As mules are sterile, you can't breed them with dumb asses, therefore, they may make a great stew, to feed to pigs, to feed the people.
The Cuban government often attributes its economic woes entirely to U.S. sanctions. However, a substantial share of the blame lies with systemic economic mismanagement. The government's centralized control over the economy, resistance to meaningful reforms, and ineffective policy decisions have led to chronic shortages, inefficiencies, and stunted growth. This governance approach reflects a leadership more focused on maintaining political power than fostering economic opportunities or improving conditions for its citizens. These challenges have driven mass migration, as many Cubans-particularly those with initiative and ambition-seek better prospects abroad, exacerbating the brain drain and leaving the country with a shrinking and aging workforce. Additionally, foreign investment remains low due to concerns about property rights, burdensome regulations, and fears of government overreach.
As a Canadian this is the first year in over 10 that I am not going to Cuba. Last year I went and once leaving the resort, everywhere I went people were asking me for money - even the elderly and children. Everyone openly calls the government "the mafia". Taxis were messed up with dirty gas. The final straw for me was no running water. I love the people of cuba but until they overthrow the goons, I don't dare to go back.
Does anyone else have a reaction like chalk on a blackboard to the pronunciation of the word “deterioration”? Joe, you always drop the ior sound. Very important!
I have been to Cuba so one thing not calculated is bio-diesel is widely used, they have lots of sugar cane to make. Cuban's are very intuitive and resourceful on finding solutions to their ongoing issues and of coarse the biggest problem is the gov that still plays a lot of rhetoric to bit anyone that wants to help.
I believe they lack the soil additives (fertilizer, phosphorus, sulfur etc...) needed for agriculture and it caused a collapse in sugar exports. Sad because it could have kept them afloat.
As usual very interesting and enlightening, Joe. To me the situation sounds a bit like the one in Sri Lanka in 2022-2023, which you reported quite a lot from back then. I would appriciate if you could do a follow-up report from Sri Lanka.

Forcing Cuba to ally with America's enemies for protection and economic aid is kinda the most stupid thing America can possibly do, from a geopolitics standpoint. A mistake that almost led to nuclear destruction in 1962, yet nothing was learned from the mistake. If the U.S. allowed Cuba to freely trade with it, Cuba would become hopelessly dependent on the U.S. w/o any chanche to reach a level where Cuba might have leverage over the U.S. since it's economy would be only tourism and low-end manufacturing. The smartest thing America could do right now, is build a power cable from Florida to Cuba and supply Cuba with its cheap electricity. Cuba would become instantaniously dependent on the U.S.

A mistake that almost led to nuclear destruction in 1962, yet nothing was learned from the mistake. This 1962 mistake, as you outlined, is why the US has spent trillions getting ready for this moment in our world today. Cuba has chosen its allies and Russia isn't US friendly. The US's one-sided embargo is not a blockade. No one's stopping Cuba from fixing its problems except the Cuban state.

I would agree with everything you say except the work ethic

@@jorr1334Nobody is worse than Haiti

Power to the people, defund the government.
there is socialism and socialism.
I second, Power to the people my brother.

It's hard to grasp that it has lasted this long, especially since the fall of the USSR.
...because the government has guns and prisons.
Cuba has 11 million people on an island too small and with too little energy, water and other resources to feed, clothe, house and keep the lights on for 11 million people. As food prices rise, so will food insecurity and then civil unrest.
What they have is a "culture" of people that think they are 10x smarter then they really are..
If they cant produce food, its their own fault..

If they have no fuel, they can use horses or donkeys. Travels will be a bit longer, but more adventurous.
I suspect the DNC has excess mules and jack asses available for export, now that government animal feeding subsidies are being removed.
Yes, so long as starvation doesn't lead to people eating them.
Usually Joe just posts “X is on the _brink_ of collapse”
We'll have fusion reactors before X collapses.
USA is collapsed!😉
Very sound analysis. Keep it up 👍🏽 ❤
As a Canadian this is the first year in over 10 that I am not going to Cuba. Last year I went and once leaving the resort, everywhere I went people were asking me for money - even the elderly and children. Everyone openly calls the government "the mafia".
Cuba is currently importing sugar from Brazil
I believe they lack the soil additives (fertilizer, phosphorus, sulfur etc...) needed for agriculture and it caused a collapse in sugar exports. Sad because it could have kept them afloat.
