What people fail to realize. Is that ESPN is the sponsor. Of course they don't know anything about HBCU bands. That's why there are judges from HBCU bands. That is judging bands for their weekly fieldshows! I think the judging is fair. And it is really simple to break down. Most people don't like it. Because it is an rubric system. To really tell you how good your "favorite" band really is. And not so much of how "loud" a band is or their "popularity". Again, these are HBCU former band directors, dance coaches, etc that is on this judging panel. So it is all in fairness to every program that is being judged on their performances.
I'm pretty sure everyone knows ESPN is not doing the actual judging, but what is the rubric? They've never said how they do the actual judging or given an example of how they came to a certain score yet. Yes, these are former directors and dance coaches, but they're not necessarily judging whatever their specialty is. I'm pretty certain they put out a statement saying that the judges would be switching up with components they were judging
I think the entire thing is ridiculous. First of all, it costs more to get the band to the competition than the so called prize money. Second of all, I would not spend a dime to see any halftime show. However, I would spend money to see a stand battle go 8 or 9 rounds because that will tell what your band is all about. The sorrowest band can put on a decent halftime show and that tells you nothing. Lastly, those so called rankings are not worth a thirteen cent piece with a whole in it.
Actually it's the opposite. They're called Marching bands of a reason, not stay in the stands bands. Yall cry a lot for no reason. This competition is trying to attract attendees and viewers and in order to do that they have to do what people want to see and a halftime show is not it. It is not worth it in my opinion and trust me I am not the only one who feels this way. In the HBCU world, flags and pageantry is not what will draw crowds. That's something they do in non-melanated conferences and in the HBCU arena (people who they depend on to buy tickets) don't care about flags and pageantry period!!!!! They care about sound. After the field show, they have nothing else so when you see them march in a parade, they look like any other band and nothing sets them aside from every other band. However, there are 2 or 3 HBCU bands that their sound sets them aside from eerybody else. Sounds like making excuses and providing cover for the judges. Just because they're well-known directors that doesn't mean bias can't come into play. Also, that doesn't mean that each director is judging the component that's best for them to judge. I've talked to people who are directors and dance coaches now. Some of them were percussionist or percussion majors when they were in school, and even they are kind of unsure how the judges got to their auxiliary and percussion scores. Also, we don't truly know if all their scores come from submitted videos or not. Some of these schools have very little footage out there. This could all be easily rectified by them putting out an example of how and why they judged a band a certain way. They could ask a band the volunteer.
