It is actually not in the least surprising that Gould would perform this work. Gould regarded Richard Strauss as "the greatest musical figure who has lived in this century." Unfortunately for Gould, Strauss did not write very many compositions (other than his songs) that use the piano. The Burleske is probably the best of such works. It is actually the first of Strauss works to enter the standard repertoire. Gould's performance here, despite some sensitive playing, is of course too slow. The classic recording of this work is Byron Janis with Fritz Reiner conducting.
Whatever mocking Strauss may have meant by this piece, Gould managed to make a real drama out of it, although I am not sure he actually meant it, because he knew the background of course. Every time I listen to this version I love it more and more.
I agree Alice. I didn't know anything about this work, or that this video even existed, but I'm mesmerized by the work, and even more, as usual, by Glenn's thoroughly heartfelt interpretation of it. As you might know, Glenn loved Richard and recorded many of his works.
This is quite funny as satire. Even though I do respect the piano concerto format. It is quite refreshing to see and hear it being lampooned so well the clever profusely Dicky Strauss
There is no bigger fan of Glenn Gould than me (though many are my equal). However, I cannot for the life of me understand what he sees in this piece of music, lol.
I think Gould was interpreting the piece ironically, but the irony would have come across more acutely had he played the fast sections faster. Nevertheless, the clarity is amazing, and this is fascinating as a historical document.
Introducing the performance was a very young and handsome Alex Trebek, who would go on to host one of Television’s most popular game shows, “Jeopardy” for more than 30 years.
Hat zwar nicht viel mit dem Stück zu tun... ist aber trotzdem sehr schön. Wenn man nicht wüsste, wie das eigentlich klingt, würde man das genial finden.
Perhaps not so uncharacteristic of him, given his acute sense of parody. Remember his radio and TV programs? And he enjoued Strauss's piano music (he recorded his piano sonata). I'd say here the tempo is a bit too slow However, Gould's playing is supremely clear, articulate and sensitive.
Gould was massively into Strauss. I would dare to say that Mozart would be more uncharacteristic. But of course we do know of Glenn's primary obsession with Bach.
A simple mathematical equation: You take the tempo from Glenn Gould, you multiple this tempo with 1.25 from the original and add a little bit more temperament and musical esprit: then you have the ingenious interpretation from Martha Argerich with Claudio Abbado !
So true. Gould is so different. This could have been better recorded.Ab b ado and Argerich got the spirit better and their recording just sounds right.Fancy is not here like it is in Goulds Bach. I need to hear his Konzertstuck again.
Neither Christoph Eschenbach nor Manfred Honeck could have saved this by being on the podium for it, even thnogh I am sure both of them might think they could.
if you can handle lots of work u can handle everything. And work was not Physical. Inds inchu es Physikakan ashxatanq talis??? Bil bi prav es or@ chein hastsni vse strani
Serkin Bolet also recorded this. If you hear early Gulda you wonder why his legacy is not as big. He is one of yhe fewGerman pianists w/somethings to say in Chopin.Goulds Chopin might be one of the worst ever! Argerichs film is great as is her ScriabinPrometheus! She really cant be touched.
And, then there's Sviatoslav Richter! Listen to his interpretation and you'll see that he, by the same token, "kicks Marta's ass up and down the stage"!
@@TheSonofFrank We won´t know the original interpretation. Even if one could read a critique on the scherzo of that time, the reviewer would be biased, standing in his current musical period. This Strauss sounds like Prokofiev, ahead of his time. The category of burlesque was a decoy to slip a real avant garde opus into the status quo. Genius.
Grandissimo Glenn.
Unico.Ascoltare Glenn Gould è veramente un grande piacere. Grazie.
Thanks for sharing this jewel. Maestro Gould, was, is and always be a god of the piano.
Glenn! Naughty genius.
extraordinario!
What an amazing video... thank you so much for sharing!
utterly fascinating - I do love this man and his art so much.
If Gould ever come to the Earth again? Adore him! Thank you for sharing!
I love lang langs playing of the goldberg variations
two absolutely Genius did come together....Strauss and Gould....a genius Piano Concerto and a genius Pianist :-) thx for posting this gem:-)
The announcer was Alex Trebek from Jeopardy.
Cornell Overbeeke, MD Thank you! I was wondering who. And why he sounded so familiar 😅 Always such a perfect speaker & professional.
Sure was
Rip :/
yes! and only 27 years old here! alex trebek was the voice of the CBC!
I am certainly happy he found his higher calling!😂
Ravishing performance by Glenn Gould. The tympanist is rather fine too.

That’s John Wyre.

Lol Alex Trebek. that voice and delivery is classic

I would never have guessed I would find Gould playing strauss Burlesque. Not quite Argerich in this genre but still a rare treat!
fantastic!!
The director knew what he was doing. Splendid job. And of course, Glenn is God.
I believe the Timpanist is John Wyre as a young man.
コレは凄い記録!

Imagine Gould enjoyed showing his technique in this style while simultaneously lampooning Horowitz & Co.😉
There is no bigger fan of Glenn Gould than me (though many are my equal). However, I cannot for the life of me understand what he sees in this piece of music, lol.
Check out Argerich, live. This does sound a little wooden. Been a fan of this work for 50 years. Give it a chance.
I think it’s the humor and satire in this piece.
ok, his playing is a bit strange, but he still was intelligent enough (actually he was a genious) to recognize that it is a masterwork
Могу с Вами поспорить насчет степени фанатизма 😂. И, надеюсь, за три года Вы уже почувствовали в этой музыке то же, что и Гленн.
In “ The Glenn Gould Reader”. GG writes extensively about Strauss and his position in the progression of music.
I think Gould was interpreting the piece ironically, but the irony would have come across more acutely had he played the fast sections faster. Nevertheless, the clarity is amazing, and this is fascinating as a historical document.
Alex trebek was the best, then and later. A splendid memorial to him, too.
Thank you and good night

Just cut out the speaker who says Rikhard and then breaks the ambience.
Hey! An intro by the Jeopardy dude!
PLEASE repost The Russian Journey !!
TV announcers for $400, please. "Who is Alex Trebek?" You will be missed!
This verges on what I'd characterize as the party cd category of performances of any piece.
Introduced by Alex Trebek.
I'll take kick-ass pianists for $1000, Alex.
Alright sir. *gives 1000$*
Magnificent! (The timpanist should have better performed if sit down: far too tall for the instrument, I am afraid)
This is as uncharacteristic for Gould as it is fascinating.

Where is their Rachmaninov Fourth Piano Concerto? It could give the Trifonov/Nezet-Seguin a run for the money. For all the wrong reasons.
How odd that at about 8:30 Golschmann removes his glasses.
It's all about the fine print Andrew. lol
Does anyone know the name of the outro song?
Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss.
A simple mathematical equation: You take the tempo from Glenn Gould, you multiple this tempo with 1.25 from the original and add a little bit more temperament and musical esprit: then you have the ingenious interpretation from Martha Argerich with Claudio Abbado !
No. You'd still have very arthritic timpani playing. The second soloist is crucial to this work
So true. Gould is so different. This could have been better recorded.Ab b ado and Argerich got the spirit better and their recording just sounds right.Fancy is not here like it is in Goulds Bach. I need to hear his Konzertstuck again.
Stiff! If you want to hear how it should sound, listen to R. Buchbinder (Dohnányi + Wiener Philh.). Glenn sounds here like a typewriter
Eugen d´Albert and Richard Strauss are very amused
Asuma dashli da ribi, nervi vidali
take a look at ruclips.net/video/8XrxxdvSxiU/видео.html to hear glenn practising this piece, you welcome in advance.

Nec plus ultra. At the end of the rainbow.

contrast against Martha Argerich / R.Strauss' Burlesque. Both very different sound, speed and fierceness. I prefer to hear hers

I already laughed when the timpanist started playing.
This is quite good. But, if you're looking for great, astounding, and phenomenal, Martha Argerich kicks his ass up and down the concert stage!
And, then there's Sviatoslav Richter! Listen to his interpretation and you'll see that he, by the same token, "kicks Marta's ass up and down the stage"!
Concerting can be quite disconcerting in its violent competition.
@@theUroshman Amen.

Весь зал в шестиконечных звездах.. 😂 Аж противно..
Show me what Bach does to you in one video...this is awful
This is not even Bach
@@pianosbloxworld4460, this is Gould.😁 Bach hat eine Orgelbank!
I like Burlesque very much but this interpretation is very bad. It looks like piano practicing, no concert interpretation . He kills this piece 🙈🙈🙈👎
.-.
I agree. Contrast this with a performance with Argerich and Abbado, also on You Tube. And enjoy her smile at the tympanist’s last note.
