Thanks for coming to my shop (Beyond Retro)! Staff were super excited, and I'm only disappointed I wasn't there while you were there myself to have a chat!
Honestly as a Western Australian I gotta say it's cool to see our wonderful city shown off. We are so far away from the rest of Australia so it's always great to see someone talking positively about us. Hope we see you back in Peth again and check out the South Side game stores.
I’m also Australian and he doesn’t say Australia normally - has he been in America for decades? Usually you keep your accent if you move internationally after like 8ish years old
Glad to hear you enjoyed Perth, and super stoked you went to Beyond Retro & Retro Collect, I absolutely love browsing those stores from time to time and always find something nice there. Shame I missed you both though, would've been nice to meet up and chat for a bit
Woah as someone who lives in the Perth area it's crazy seeing places I have been to in a RUclips video, glad you enjoyed Perth next time you come try to visit the nostalgia box it's a really cool video game museum I would highly recommend
I was surprised to find that most of the games in Aus are cheaper than Canadian prices despite our dollar being slightly higher. In Canada most games are $80 + tax which (ends up being just under $90 with tax.) While in Australia most games are $60 -70 tax included.
I recently bought a Switch OLED, I’ve been game hunting too, mainly for party games with the family Ended up getting Mario Party Superstars, and MK8 Deluxe as well as a couple of others, it’s crazy how some games that have been out for over 5-7 years have kept their value and have barely dropped in price, most games are around the $65-80 mark, usually titles on the PS or XBOX drop heavily after this many years but I was surprised to see how the Switch games are still pretty much retailing at full price.
It isn't? If you do the math. $1 usd = $1.50 aud it's $60 for a modern switch game in the us while it's $80 here. $60 x 1.5 = $90, so it's $10 less in Australia
I grew up in the 90's and my Gosh, I miss these retro aesthetics and the quality games 'Made in Japan' at 04:20 . I'd also add some Double Dragon and Metal Slug into the mix out of sheer sentiment. I was so close to visiting Japan at one point. I had experience with MoCap and in late 2015 I was in contact with Capcom about the facial likeness role of Leon for the Resident Evil 2 Remake. I failed to mention I also have a voice acting background, in the end I lost the part and I can't forgive myself for wasting such an opportunity to visit the place that inspired artists like Toriyama San. R.I.P.
Hey!! Welcome back to Australia! Just a tip, a lot of JB hi fi stores do price match which I use a lot (in Sydney anyway), but I’m glad your supporting small businesses cause they do hold a lot of hidden gems :)
These are genuinely my favorite types of videos, especially the quality you and the editor put into them :) I’m so glad you got to go back to Australia, thank you for showing us all the cool stores and the memories!!
From someone who lives in Adelaide It's nuts seeing my home town on beatemups RUclips. I knew you were in Adelaide recently and I was tempted to try and meet you
Game Quest is how I originally found your channel, many moons ago. This just took me straight back to those days with a rush of nostalgia. Amazing video, Wood!
There's still a Games Traders store in Colonnades in Adelaide 😁. The moved from Marion to Seaford then Colonnades. Their website is still comes under Seaford
To the average american probably, but I imagine to someone in austrialia he probably sounds a bit american. Listening to him and paying attention to what he's saying I do kind of here he sounds american at times.
I wish I found this channel 10 years ago. I used to work in the biggest of the Adelaide Gametraders, Marion. I can confirm that a combination of online sales becoming dominant in the second hand market, the lack of profit from new games (jb sells at cost, makes competing on new prices impossible) and rent increases from the centre pretty much killed non eb stores. The store pivoted to merch and pop vinyls but even those higher margins items couldn't help us with the rent long term. The store closed in 2018/19. I left at the start of 2016, and by that stage only had a few shelves of video games left with merch being dominant. The best years for game stores were the wii, 360 and ps3 era and thing quickly went down hill after that. I had a quick look through some of the older videos to spot the store, but no luck yet. Hope to find a few shots.
Amazing video, I enjoyed it a lot. As a Greek I have to say that is an amazing food for us and it is in our culture but in my opinion yiros is one of the greatest food in the world
Welcome home mate. I love the way you accent started to shift between the voice over to "in the street" you. Your stop at Rottnest reminded me why I need to get back to WA from the east coast.
Psst... psst... @beatemups Wood, shots with your 🎧 headphones before talking about your Raycons 🎧 and more after... maybe editor should change the shots 🤷🏻♂ It's kind of weird, specially when talking about how much you were looking to travel with your Raycons 🤭
@adventurousash don’t get me wrong, I support his adds and the creativity he puts into them. But this time looks like an editor mistake. He might have used his Raycons on the flight (specially to sleep while listening to music, since big headphones don’t allow that), I was just adding my 2 cents here to keep an eye on the storytelling.
Legit one of my favourite videos you have ever made, Wood. Love the style, tone, editing and background on yourself and Australia. Very enjoyable watch.
Objection! The best and original gyros pita come from Greece. Not to mention the amazing beaches in the islands. Highly recommend you to plan a small trip there at some point
You really hit the lottery with Kim. The amount of support she gives you for your love of Nintendo and gaming related stuff is so rare these days. Really hope the two of you stay happy together for a very very long time.
0:47 Monaco Grand Prix Racing Simulator on the original square playstation was my first ever game that my dad bought me that was bundled into the console way back in summer 1999. WOW the memories are flooding back, playing that single game everyday all summer.
it is always nice for me to see someone having nostalgia for their hometown and the things they grew up with..no matter what country or city, we all have our little things we miss.
You had me at ROFL at "are we going down.." comment with your Raycons. Glad you mentioned Singapore as I'm from here. Been a subscriber since you were just starting. Gamer kid here and Switch, 3DS, GBA, Nintendo lover here etc. and I love your vlogs recently. Watched the Japan series & hubby and I are looking forward to game hunting this Oct. Always look forward to your videos Wood. :)
Gametraders are my GOAT! Still 1 in Adelaide. They recently had Pokémon Ruby, full box, manuals, E-reader cards the whole sh-bang! Thanks for shouting out Adelaide, it’s always cool when Adelaide gets some rep ❤
12:46 the games in the UK also have the text centered to the middle and our Pokémon games have the symbols as well so maybe America is the one that's different 😂
Definitely an awesome video. Seeing the clip with Chris definitely takes me back to the early days of your channel. Can’t wait to watch the next video of you n Kim in Australia.
If nobody is going to mention your beautiful beach house backdrop, I will! Love what you did with the shoreline loop animation. Little plant, leafs blowing in the wind. 🏝️🍃 Kudos!
Take this as you will Wood, but my friend was trying to find your channel and she asked me "what is that RUclips gaming channel with the weird Australian man and his really cool gf?" lol
Kinda crazy watching this. As a fan, In Australia watching you back when you were a lot smaller and still in Aus hits the feels. Never thought you’d be this big or in America now. Congrats Woodman
I've been subscribed since the first ever Game Quest episode. It's great to see you back in Australia. I'm really looking forward to the next episode and seeing you back game hunting with Chris.
It's funny that in Germany we have somethino like yiros ( or how it spelled), but it called Dürüm or Yuffka ... which literally is the Wrap/Burrito Version of the Döner.
I immigrated to texas 3 months ago from queensland and i didnt know the teary eyed goodbye was the last time i would see her. She pased away last week. I'm so glad you got to see yours again ❤️ i know it's hard
I love whenever Wood says he has "lost his Australian accent" Nobody is mistaking you for anything but Australian mate. Nothing wrong with that! I just think its funny.
As an Aussie content creator myself in gaming niche, found myself watching this first ever video of yours. If you ever went to an Antique Bazaar (or an equivalent) you might find some great goodies . On the food front if you went to Melbourne, hopefully you enjoy a charcoal cooked Gyro (the horizontal type not the vertical type). Will blow your tastebuds minds. And yes the coffee too!
Ooh nostalgia trip. From another ex Adelaidian.Shin Tokyo still acknowledges my membership from when they were a tiny little hidyhole in the train station circa 2000ish. Shout out to Will who hit me up with my insanely expensive macross toys.
I would enjoy watching a video of your uncle talking about his gaming experience back in the days... Dude, he had a seriously cool looking collection. That really was awesome!
A lot of those download code copies are just re-releases. Mario + Rabbids and I also believe Immortals did get physical copies at launch. This was pretty much a Ubisoft decision, I assume to keep costs down for Switch releases?
Ooh yes!! Australia! I won't get into a loosely related long story here even though I was tempted to. (1:27) I see what you mean, and could already identify from the KrisWorld logo on the IFE screen that you were on a Singapore Airlines flight. Nice! Considering the video upload date, I may have even been on the same Singapore to Perth flight, but I was in the economy class section. (1:43) Yep! I've seen them, but I personally don't like how first-party games for Nintendo systems are sold here in Singapore with the US cover art that has both English and Spanish text, though I think the "Middle East and Southeast Asia" Nintendo system region the country is part of is slowly moving away from that, however it's why I favour UK and Australian copies for my physical Switch game collection. The reason why you only saw a limited selection of game titles at stores in Changi Airport transit areas is due to distribution. Not only do we not officially get Nintendo online services here (my Nintendo account is instead registered in Australia), but the airport stores, as well as major electronics retailers like Challenger and Best Denki only really sell what is distributed by Convergent Systems and Maxsoft, while we have to go online or go to a dedicated game store for our fix of third-party titles, or use a foreign registered Nintendo account to access the eShop for the system region the country is a part of (in my case, Australia and New Zealand). Also, Nintendo consoles here in Singapore come with the wrong power adaptors! We're supposed to get power adaptors with UK plugs on them, but we instead get them with European plugs and are forced to use plug converters, or in my case, buy Switch power adaptors with UK plugs from grey market sellers. I have no idea why Convergent Systems decided to do that, though I do know they took over Nintendo console and accessory distribution and service from Maxsoft some time back. (3:59) PERTH?!?! Aaaaahhhhhhh I'm already here, but already blew my budget for games a while back. I still have enough of a budget for children's fiction books, though. (5:19) That's another thing I got accustomed to as part of favouring UK and Aus/NZ physical releases over the MESA releases (which use US cover art) that are available to me back home in Singapore. (9:38) As far as I know from family members, shops here in Perth generally open from 9 to 5, and there's just one day a week allocated for late-night shopping (extended business hours), which I think are on Fridays except for Westfield malls that do it on Thursdays, but I might be wrong. (12:12) I assume the host uses Google search, but even when using DuckDuckGo, the little switch for localised search was turned on by default and set to Australia, whereas it didn't turn on that switch in Singapore. The only thing is that Meta's advertising platform still shows me adverts for Singapore, which would confuse me as I'd have to manually cross-reference companies' Singaporean websites with their Australian websites to check for product availability unless I was ordering online to send to my home address and pick up when I get home. I think I have to be here for over a month or so in order to get it to switch. (12:38) The Ty games!!! I had been meaning to get digital copies as I have them on my eShop wishlist, but I forgot that there were physical copies!! (16:15) I think the sole point is to just increase visibility for those games, because at that point, unless I want some spare Switch game card cases, want to redeem loyalty points, or the code in a box was cheaper than the actual eShop listing at the time, I'd rather just go to the eShop and buy the game there directly, especially if it were on sale there like with the recent Winter Sale that recently happened here and I bought a few games during. (16:26) That reminded me of when I bought a copy of that recently and the cashier gave me one of the pre-order bonus fridge magnets as they had some left over! Nice! I've never played a Paper Mario game, let alone a HD remaster of one of the best from what I heard, and I've just started playing it, bur at the same time, every time I reach for my Switch, I have the tendency to want to play Splatoon 3 instead. (20:28) I'm curious as to if you (the host) tried a Dare while you were in Perth. I don't drink it as I don't drink coffee, but some of my family members like it. (21:01) Besides the Freeview TV channels and some of the restaurants, the snacks are another thing I miss about Australia. (21:06) Shapes!!! Especially the Originals Pizza and Barbecue flavours that are some of the ones I like. We do get Shapes and TimTam in Singapore thanks to imports, but they're a limited selection to what I can get in Australia. I'm actually eating some barbecue Shapes now while watching this video! I also would want to briefly mention the Bluey biscuits, they're like a lighter version of Shapes for younger children, and I mean lighter on flavour. They came in small packs, and I think the popularity led Arnott's to package Shapes Originals the same way too, presumably for older children and/or children who don't like Bluey (but may still watch ABC Kids for other shows). (21:09) Aaaahhhhh!! Pods!!!!!!! I enjoy those too, but the Mars version as I don't really like Snickers (the candy bar, not the Bluey character) due to me not liking candy containing nuts in general. (22:35) AAAHHHHHHHH SPLATOON 3 SIDE ORDER!!! 🤩 That's it, I'm grabbing my Switch as I was on a Side Order run before suspending it and am tempted to finish that run now. 🤩 (23:30) That's reminding me of how I prefer the Australian menus of some restaurant chains over the Singaporean menus, in particular with Subway, but also with KFC and McDonald's to some extent. For Burger King/Hungry Jack's, its more of a ‘you get some, you lose some’ situation for me at this point in time, then there are also restaurants that just don't exist in Singapore, like Grill'd. On a side note, I have to wonder if the host of the video went to a Grill'd restaurant while he was in Perth and tried any one of their burgers.
I'm surprised Kena Bridge of Spirits wasn't on this list. It felt mechanically like God of War, with some Souls like mechanics, but with a bright and colourful visual style and Pixar level animation. It was incredibly polished and fun to play. It was also longer than I expected. I loved it.
I come from Perth and have lived in Germany since 2009. I know how you feel about Aussie nostalgia 😊 Cashies was the best back in the day. love your channel bro
Been with the channel since about 32k subs and I loved the Game Quest days, so this is the kind of video I miss. Also, it's awesome to see Chris again! Have a fab trip. 👍🏻
Been watching you for, well since early years wood, glad you got to see your siblings after everything you have shared with us! Glad you are doing well and love everything you do!
I've never lived more than two hours from my home town and remember how awesome it felt when I was able to go back for a visit. I can only imagine how Wood felt going back to Australia.

First thing I noticed too when he was talking about that Nintendo store in Singapore, then he changed to the "Raycon" piece 😅; they seem to be Bose.
You should do a collab with Dankpods while youre in Australia

they are both from South Australia so..
Immediately thought of Wade when I saw the cashie's price tags 😀

That's it, I'm grabbing my Switch as I was on a Side Order run before suspending it and am tempted to finish that run now. 🤩
(23:30) That's reminding me of how I prefer the Australian menus of some restaurant chains over the Singaporean menus, in particular with Subway, but also with KFC and McDonald's to some extent.
I loved it.
Man when Scott The Woz does a game hunting video , he goes all out and in Australia. Dang we eating good lol.
Man it ended too fast. I wanted more.

I can confirm as an Australian that has done a lot of traveling, coffee is indeed significantly better !
I've never lived more than two hours from my home town and remember how awesome it felt when I was able to go back for a visit. I can only imagine how Wood felt going back to Australia.
Fun fact about those spines on Switch boxes. Because those are PAL versions, that is exactly what they look like in all of the PAL regions.
I remember EB games from when I was a kid and the original name was Electronics Boutique if I remember correctly
You being back in Aus would have been the perfect opportunity for a dank pods collab.
"didn't want to bring big bulky headphones" immediately after a shot of him wearing said headphones.
