I’m 5th generation Santa Marian born and raised. I moved my family out of there due to poor schools, high crime, drugs, homelessness, gangs and incompetent government. We left the state for North Dakota, people are friendly, I don’t have to lock my doors at night, better schools. I’ll always love Santa Maria, but it is trending in the wrong direction, compared to L.A. or SF it appears calm and peaceful, but it’s really declining over the decades. It’s less diverse too, it’s mostly Hispanic, back in the day there was a more diverse mix of Portuguese, Swiss-Italian, Okie, Filipino, Japanese and Mexican… a lot of people can’t communicate with each other due to only speaking Spanish or English, a lot of people on welfare. It’s lost it’s former glory forever I’m afraid.
6:05 you missed the left turn that gets you to Waller Park, one of the best public spaces I've ever seen. It was supposed to be a zoo but when that failed, it became a massive public park with areas of wilderness, winding paths, ponds, and huge grassy expanses. There's no better place to have a picnic.
@@miguelrodriguez4487 I did some research, and found there actually was a zoo on part of the park, but the majority was actually a park. The zoo was stopped in the 1960s over concerns of animals being in small cages instead of modern habitats.

Interesting to hear somebody who’s not from Santa Maria talk about it. I live about 42 miles north of Santa Maria in San Luis Obispo County. I travel to Santa Maria almost every weekend. I love it there and most of my friends live there too. There is plenty of shopping down Broadway, the main street that you guys are driving on, and on weekends, people go cruising all up and down Broadway with their flashy cars. Then there's the food. Lots of different styles to enjoy. I wish I could live there so that I can visit my friends more often but housing is a bit too pricey for me.
Santa Maria, California!?!? There's NOTHING to do here, no good restaurants, no entertainment, no shopping, no diversity... If you're from a big city, you will die of boredom!
I live here bc ppl get hired at Vandenberg at get paid bank to move. Im from SLO County which is more beautiful but with money offered by private companies on base this area will continue to grow. Hopefully more ppl will be able to afford the outrageous cost of living.
Beautiful country! I haven't been to Santa Maria yet and need to go! The area is known for its distinct style of Brisket Barbeque. Wouldn't move to Alabama but might consider Nevada, New Mexico or Idaho. No need to move across the country for a semi reasonable cost of living.
Sant maria is where Tri tip bbq originated. I lived in that town for 22 years. It used to be a great place to live. Now it's full of crime in all parts of town. Lots of problems. The cost of living has sky rocketed. Many people there struggle to make ends meet. Some of the other cities on the central coast are nice but they are extremely expensive.. Santa maria doesn't really have much to offer. And there's not much to do there anymore. It's really sad how it has become. I finally left 3 years ago and moved to Oregon. Best decision I made. I love it here.
